Back in 1995, as the world prepared for the release of HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, Michael Jackson launched one of the most extravagant album promo campaigns of all time. Alongside a massive advertising blitz and a short film-style commercial directed by Stan Winston (yes, the same legend behind Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park), came something even bigger:
👉 A fleet of GIANT Michael Jackson statues.
We’re talking around 9–10 towering monoliths, each standing approximately 10 metres (32 feet) tall, weighing around 20 tonnes, and made of fibreglass, resin, and steel.
They were designed to depict MJ in full military regalia – arms folded, jaw set, defiant – like a pop star turned revolutionary icon. Think Soviet monument meets music video vibes. These statues were not subtle. They were Michael Jackson. ✨
🌍 Where Were They Originally Placed?
These statues popped up all over Europe and beyond:
-
🇬🇧 London, UK – Floated dramatically down the River Thames on a barge near Tower Bridge.
-
🇫🇷 Paris, France – Set up in front of the Eiffel Tower.
-
🇩🇪 Berlin & Hamburg, Germany – Berlin hosted one near Brandenburg Gate; Hamburg got its own too.
-
🇨🇿 Prague, Czech Republic – Featured prominently when MJ kicked off his 1996 HIStory World Tour there.
-
🇪🇸 Madrid, Spain
-
🇮🇹 Milan, Italy
-
🇧🇪 Brussels, Belgium
-
🇳🇱 Best, Netherlands – More on this survivor below!
Each one was strategically placed in a high-traffic area to maximize impact, draw fans, and generate buzz for the album and tour. They were like mini tourist attractions – some lasting weeks, others just days.
🧭 Where Are They Now?
Let’s dig into where some of these colossi ended up – and what happened to the rest.
🇳🇱 Best, Netherlands – MJ’s Legacy Forest
One of the best-preserved HIStory statues today lives in Best, a town in the Netherlands. It’s part of a private fan-run park known as “MJ’s Legacy Forest”. The statue is in surprisingly good condition and serves as a centrepiece for gatherings, tributes, and fan events.
🗣️ Fun fact: The statue was even repainted and restored to its original glory!
🇩🇪 Germany – Saved, Scrapped, or Lost
Germany had at least two known statues during the campaign:
-
One in Hamburg was privately acquired and appears occasionally at fan expos.
-
Another in Berlin was reportedly seen in a scrapyard years later – its fate is unknown, though fans tried to raise funds to rescue it.
🧩 Rumours suggest at least one was cut into pieces for easier storage or transport.
🇬🇧 UK – A Tale of Two Statues
While the floating statue on the Thames vanished post-campaign (likely disassembled), another MJ statue popped up years later:
-
The Fulham Football Club statue, commissioned by then-owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, wasn’t part of the original promo run but used a similar design.
-
After backlash from fans, it was removed in 2013, sent to the National Football Museum, and eventually put into storage (quietly) after Leaving Neverland aired.
🇨🇿 Prague – Tour Opener, Vanishing Act
Prague’s statue debuted in Letná Park in 1996 to hype the HIStory World Tour, which opened in the Czech capital.
-
It was a jaw-dropping centrepiece, seen by over 125,000 people on opening night.
-
But shortly after? Poof. It vanished – believed to have been dismantled or recycled.
🧤 Other Rumoured Locations & Fates
-
Some say a statue ended up in Las Vegas briefly for an exhibit before being taken down again.
-
There’s fan footage of at least one statue being hauled off in pieces by crane.
-
A few were likely stored in record label warehouses, then junked when space or sentiment ran out.
-
Unofficial replicas exist too – fan-made tributes based on the HIStory pose.
🎬 What Was the Point of All This?
The goal of the statue stunt was simple:
To make Michael Jackson look immortal, untouchable, and iconic.
The HIStory promo campaign cost tens of millions of dollars, with these statues acting as:
-
Marketing tools
-
Political statements
-
Art installations
-
Ego monuments (let’s be real)
It worked – the stunt created buzz, press coverage, and unforgettable imagery. For a pop star whose career had already redefined music video, dance, and global celebrity, this was just another moonwalk-sized flex.
📼 Bonus Fact: The Commercial
The short film Michael Jackson: HIStory Teaser was a cinematic epic in itself. Directed by Stan Winston, it showed MJ leading an army of soldiers through a dystopian city square while fans bowed before his statue.
The whole thing was a blend of Orwellian imagery, Hollywood effects, and MJ mythos.
Watch it on YouTube – it’s peak ’90s mega-budget madness.
🧠 Final Thoughts: Where Pop Meets Mythology
These statues were more than promos. They were part of Michael Jackson’s self-crafted mythology – a symbol of artistic legacy, resilience, and scale. Whether you view them as genius marketing, vanity projects, or dystopian pop art, they remain one of the most audacious things ever done to promote a record.
🎤 And like the man himself, they left a mark – even if most of them have faded into the mist of HIStory.
