โ€œTHE GODFATHERS OF HEAVYโ€ โ€“ A LOVE LETTER IN 12 LOUD VOICES

Black Sabbath didnโ€™t just start heavy metal โ€” they birthed the beast, raised it in Birmingham, and sent it howling into the night on a down-tuned devilโ€™s tritone. ๐Ÿ–ค From doom to thrash to nu-metal and back again, every rock and metal band worth their weight in patch jackets owes something to The Sabs.

So what do the rest of the riff-slingers think about Sabbath? We found 12 bands who arenโ€™t afraid to shout their Sabbath worship from the rooftops โ€” or the tour bus roof at least. ๐ŸŽธ

Buckle up, cโ€™mon butt โ€” here comes a righteous ride through praise, power chords, and pure Brummie chaos.

โšซ 1. METALLICA โ€“ โ€œWITHOUT SABBATH, THEREโ€™S NO US.โ€

๐ŸŽค Lars Ulrich: โ€œWithout Black Sabbath, thereโ€™s no Metallica. Period.โ€

You know itโ€™s serious when Lars puts the drumsticks down and gets heartfelt. Metallica have name-dropped Sabbath in basically every interview since 1981. Theyโ€™ve covered โ€œSabbra Cadabra,โ€ โ€œIron Man,โ€ and even โ€œHole in the Sky.โ€
James Hetfield once called Sabbath โ€œthe blueprint for everything we are.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฅ Sabbath were the darkness. Metallica just made it thrashier.

โšฐ๏ธ 2. SLAYER โ€“ โ€œTHEY INVENTED HEAVY.โ€

๐ŸŽธ Kerry King: โ€œThey invented heavy. Before them, there was no heavy.โ€

Slayer might be the sonic equivalent of being hit by a barbed wire truck, but even Kerry King bows to the Sabs. Black Sabbath laid down the slow, evil groundwork Slayer built their hellfire upon.

๐Ÿ”ฅ If Sabbath are the church, Slayer are the angry exorcists.

๐Ÿ˜‡ 3. FOO FIGHTERS โ€“ โ€œTONY IOMMI IS WHY I PLAY GUITAR.โ€

๐ŸŽค Dave Grohl: โ€œTony Iommi is the reason I play guitar.โ€

Yup, even Mr. Nicest-Guy-in-Rock Dave Grohl has a Sabbath side. Heโ€™s gone full fanboy over Vol. 4, jammed with Iommi, and called Sabbathโ€™s sound โ€œthe pulse of the earth.โ€
Thatโ€™s coming from a guy whoโ€™s played with literally everyone. Even your nan probably respects Grohl.

๐ŸŽธ Without Sabbath, Grohl mightโ€™ve ended up in Coldplay. Weโ€™re glad the riff called him home.

๐Ÿ‘ป 4. GHOST โ€“ โ€œWEโ€™RE NOT COPYINGโ€ฆ BUT YES WE ARE.โ€

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Tobias Forge: โ€œWeโ€™re not copying Sabbathโ€ฆ but yes, we absolutely are.โ€

Letโ€™s be honest โ€” Ghost is spooky Sabbath in pope hats. Forge has never hidden his love of the Sabs, saying they taught him how to write riffs that sound like demons smoking cigars in cathedrals.
Atmospheric? Yep. Doom-laden? Oh aye. Campy and brilliant? 100%.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Papa Emeritus is basically Ozzy in eyeliner with better merch.

๐Ÿง  5. SLIPKNOT โ€“ โ€œTHEY TAUGHT US HOW TO SCARE.โ€

๐Ÿบ Corey Taylor: โ€œSabbath taught me how to scare people with sound.โ€

Slipknotโ€™s masked mayhem owes a hefty debt to Sabbathโ€™s sonic horror show. Corey Taylor has said Sabbath made music feel like a dark spell being cast, and their โ€œevil grooveโ€ was what pulled him into metal in the first place.

๐Ÿช“ Where Sabbath whispered โ€œbe afraid,โ€ Slipknot screamed it through a megaphone. But the roots are the same.

๐ŸŽถ 6. PANTERA โ€“ โ€œIOMMI IS THE KING OF THE RIFF.โ€

โšก Dimebag Darrell (RIP): โ€œTony Iommi is the king of the riff.โ€

Thatโ€™s from the king of groove metal himself. Pantera didnโ€™t just respect Sabbath โ€” they built a southern-fried shrine to their legacy. From โ€œPlanet Caravanโ€ covers to down-tuned devastation, the Sabbath influence bleeds through every Pantera record like whiskey on denim.

๐Ÿฅƒ If riffs were currency, Sabbath and Pantera would be billionaires.

๐Ÿ‡ 7. IRON MAIDEN โ€“ โ€œSABBATH WAS THE BLUEPRINT.โ€

๐Ÿงฟ Steve Harris: โ€œSabbath were the blueprint. But we ran with it.โ€

Maidenโ€™s galloping epics might seem a million BPM away from Sabbathโ€™s doom, but even Harris admits Sabbath walked so Maiden could sprint in leather trousers.
Their twin guitars mightโ€™ve sharpened the edge, but the foundation was pure Birmingham gloom.

โš”๏ธ The difference? Sabbath are your nightmares. Maiden are your battle cry.

๐ŸŒ‘ 8. SOUNDGARDEN โ€“ โ€œTHE BEATLES OF HEAVY.โ€

๐Ÿ–ค Chris Cornell (RIP): โ€œThey were the Beatles of heavy.โ€

Cornell nailed it. Sabbath werenโ€™t just pioneers โ€” they were melodic, innovative, and world-changing. Soundgardenโ€™s sludgy riffs and Cornellโ€™s haunting vocals owe a mountain to Sabbathโ€™s blueprint.

Bonus points: Chris and Iommi even collaborated on “Black Oblivion” โ€“ a doom-prog masterpiece that sounds like a haunted cathedral sinking into the sea.

๐ŸŒŠ Seattle wouldnโ€™t have sounded the same without Sabbathโ€™s smoke curling across the Atlantic.

๐ŸŒต 9. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE โ€“ โ€œSLOW CAN BE SAVAGE.โ€

๐ŸŒ€ Josh Homme: โ€œSabbath taught me that slow and heavy can be just as badass as fast and flashy.โ€

Queens of the Stone Age might cruise in the desert stoner lane, but that low-slung Sabbath rumble is always in their rearview. Homme loves how Sabbath could turn a single riff into a hypnotic weapon โ€” no solos, no fluff, just doom.

๐ŸŒต Sabbath were stoner rock before weed knew what a bong was.

๐Ÿงฎ 10. OPETH โ€“ โ€œTHEYโ€™RE SACRED.โ€

๐Ÿ“– Mikael ร…kerfeldt: โ€œSabbath are sacred. We donโ€™t even try to touch what they did.โ€

When the most cerebral metal band on earth says โ€œnah, weโ€™re not worthy,โ€ you know Sabbath are untouchable. Opethโ€™s doomier, early work is a masterclass in Sabbath reverence, with extra Swedish existential dread.

๐Ÿฉธ Imagine Sabbath with a PhD and a pipe organ, and youโ€™ve got Opeth.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ 11. DOWN โ€“ โ€œWE ARE SABBATH WORSHIP.โ€

๐ŸŠ Phil Anselmo: โ€œWe ARE Sabbath worship.โ€

Down isnโ€™t even subtle about it. Itโ€™s straight-up riff-fuelled homage to Sabbath, filtered through Louisiana humidity and slow-burning anger. If Ozzyโ€™s voice is the sound of apocalypse, Anselmoโ€™s is the hangover after.

๐Ÿฆด Down is Sabbath with a shotgun and moonshine.

๐Ÿงจ 12. SYSTEM OF A DOWN โ€“ โ€œTHEY MADE WEIRD OKAY.โ€

๐Ÿง  Serj Tankian: โ€œSabbath made it okay to be weird and heavy.โ€

System of a Down are the definition of โ€œwhat the hell did I just hear?โ€ โ€” but beneath the madness lies the same fearless darkness and rebellion Sabbath unleashed in the โ€˜70s. Serj credits them for proving that metal didnโ€™t have to follow rules.

๐ŸŒ€ If Sabbath were dark wizards, SOAD are chaotic goblins with riffs and a political manifesto.

๐ŸŽค FINAL THOUGHTS FROM THE PIT

So, what do other bands really think about Black Sabbath?

They think they owe them everything.

Whether it’s the riff, the darkness, the doom, or just the sheer vibe of it all โ€” Sabbath changed music forever. They took rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll, dipped it in tar, and handed it to the world with a mad grin and a church bell. ๐Ÿ›Ž๏ธ

Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, and Bill didnโ€™t just make music โ€” they made a new religion, and nearly every band since is a proud disciple.

So next time you hear a crushing riff, a groaning vocal, or a lyric about war, death, or devils โ€” give a little nod to the boys from Birmingham.

LEGENDS. NEVER. DIE. ๐Ÿ–คโšก

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
