🔥 Reading Festival Granted Extra Night of Music Despite Noise Concerns

Reading Festival is officially getting bigger — and, from 2027, Thursday night is about to become a whole lot louder. 🤘

Reading Festival has been given permission to expand live music on its Main Stage to a fourth day, despite objections from local residents concerned about noise, disruption and the impact of another late night of amplified music.

The decision means that from 2027 onwards, Festival Republic will be allowed to host live music on the Main Stage on the Thursday before the traditional Friday-to-Sunday festival programme.

For festival-goers, it effectively turns what has traditionally been an arrival and warm-up day into another proper night of live music.

For some of Reading’s neighbours, however, the prospect of another evening of festival-sized speakers rattling across town hasn’t exactly gone down like a cold pint in the campsite.

🎸 Thursday Night Is Becoming a Proper Festival Night

Reading Borough Council’s licensing committee has approved Festival Republic’s application to extend the festival’s live music licence.

Under the approved arrangement, the Main Stage can operate on Thursday between 5pm and 11pm from 2027. The original licence application had sought additional Thursday live-music hours running from 5pm until midnight. (Currently)

That’s a pretty significant change.

Traditionally, Wednesday and Thursday at Reading have largely been about getting onto the campsite, pitching your tent, meeting up with mates and settling in before the serious business begins on Friday.

There have been other entertainment options around the site, but the Main Stage has remained waiting in the wings.

From 2027, that changes.

Thursday becomes gig night.

And suddenly that first festival beer comes with the possibility of standing in front of the Main Stage watching a major artist.

🎤 Why Does Reading Want Another Night?

There’s certainly an argument for it.

Weekend campers are already arriving before Friday, meaning thousands of people are already on site before the traditional Main Stage programme begins.

Turning Thursday evening into another proper night of music means those people potentially get considerably more entertainment for their festival ticket.

It would also bring Reading closer to the format used at its sister event, Leeds Festival, where Thursday Main Stage entertainment has already become part of the experience.

🔊 But Local Residents Aren’t Celebrating

Unsurprisingly, not everybody living around the festival site is thrilled about another evening of amplified music.

Residents’ associations representing hundreds of people objected to the licence variation, raising concerns about additional noise and disruption.

Elisa Miles, chair of the Warren & District Residents Association, previously warned that loud amplified music late in the evening could disrupt the sleep of people who have no choice but to remain at home. (Far Out Magazine)

The association stressed that residents weren’t simply opposed to Reading Festival existing.

Instead, they pointed towards the long-running relationship between local communities and Festival Republic, arguing that they have previously worked together to reduce some of the problems caused by hosting a massive music festival alongside residential neighbourhoods.

And we’re not talking about a small event tucked away in a field somewhere.

That’s a hell of a lot of people, speakers, traffic and activity descending on one part of Reading every August.

🔊 Noise Has Already Been a Major Talking Point

The concerns aren’t appearing out of nowhere either.

Noise surrounding Reading Festival has been an ongoing issue.

Following the 2024 festival, organisers reported an increase in noise complaints, with problems largely attributed to sound from the Chevron Stage combined with windy weather conditions. (reading.moderngov.co.uk)

Festival Republic subsequently made changes.

By 2025, plans included moving the Chevron Stage inside a tent in an effort to reduce clashes between stages and limit noise travelling beyond the festival site. (Reading Borough Council)

Council figures also showed a substantial improvement in overall complaints.

Reading Festival received 100 noise complaints in 2024, compared with 34 in 2025. The council said Festival Republic had continued working on stage positioning and other noise-reduction measures. (Reading Borough Council)

So progress has clearly been made.

But adding another six hours of Main Stage entertainment on a Thursday inevitably brings the noise debate straight back into the spotlight.

🤔 Festival Fans vs Festival Neighbours

And this is where things get complicated.

From a festival fan’s perspective?

More live music for your money sounds bloody brilliant.

If you’ve already travelled to Reading, dragged your camping gear halfway across Berkshire, wrestled with a tent and paid festival prices for food and drink, having a proper Main Stage show on Thursday sounds like a massive improvement.

Why spend an evening waiting for Friday when you could be watching another band?

But there’s another side.

Reading isn’t a remote festival surrounded by miles of empty countryside.

It sits alongside established residential communities where people still have jobs, children, pets and normal Thursday-night routines.

Not everybody within earshot bought a weekend ticket.

That’s why the relationship between Reading Festival, the council and local residents remains so important.

🎪 Reading Festival 2027 Just Became Much More Interesting

One particularly exciting question now remains:

Who’s playing Thursday night?

That’s going to be the big one.

If Festival Republic uses those additional hours to put a serious artist on the Main Stage, Thursday could quickly become one of the most anticipated parts of the entire weekend.

It could also change how people approach Reading.

Rather than arriving Thursday and treating it as preparation for Friday, festival-goers will need to be pitched, fed, watered and ready to go by late afternoon.

This feels like a significant evolution for one of Britain’s most famous festivals.

Reading Festival has constantly changed throughout its enormous history, adapting its stages, genres, campsite experience and entertainment.

Adding Thursday Main Stage music is another chapter in that evolution.

For festival-goers, it’s difficult not to get excited.

Another night. Another Main Stage show. More music.

What’s not to like?

At the same time, the concerns of people living around the festival shouldn’t simply be dismissed. Reading Festival and its neighbours occupy the same patch of Berkshire every August, and maintaining sensible noise controls will become even more important now that the Main Stage has permission to fire up a day earlier.

The challenge for Festival Republic is therefore pretty straightforward:

Make Thursday massive inside the arena without making Thursday miserable outside it.

Pull that off, and Reading Festival 2027 could feel bigger than ever.
