In a world where every riff is recorded, every scream is Snapchatted, and every pit is posted before the second chorus — one band dares to scream: PUT YOUR PHONES AWAY.
And who better to spark the rebellion than the anarchic, electro-punk juggernaut that is WARGASM?

Yep, you heard that right, mun. WARGASM have officially announced their next concert will be 100% phone-free. That means no selfies, no TikToks, no filming that one crowd surfer who’s definitely going to land on someone’s vape. It’s back to basics — raw, loud, sweaty, chaotic, and present.

So let’s break it down — why they’re doing it, how it works, why it’s stirred up a hornet’s nest of fan reactions, and whether this could be the next evolution (or devolution) of the live music scene.

🎤 Who Are WARGASM?

If you’ve been living under a rock (or perhaps just stuck in the Spotify mainstream), WARGASM are the London-based chaos merchants turning the UK rock scene on its head.

Formed by Sam Matlock and Milkie Way, WARGASM blend metal, punk, electronic, and pure rage into a volatile cocktail of filth and fury. Imagine Nine Inch Nails got blackout drunk with Slipknot and had a very loud baby — that’s WARGASM.

They’re known for:

  • Blistering live sets that do not let up
  • Songs like “Spit.”, “D.R.I.L.D.O.” and “Pyro Pyro” that are both fun and feral
  • Zero patience for the status quo
  • An aesthetic that’s part cyberpunk riot, part post-apocalyptic party

In short: they’re the perfect band to challenge the live music norm.

📴 What’s a Phone-Free Gig, Anyway?

You might’ve heard of this from artists like Jack White, Bob Dylan, or even The Prodigy’s secret sets. But this is the first time a young, modern, chaotic band like WARGASM is actively banning phones at a UK rock gig — and not in a “politely discouraged” way. We’re talking proper lock-your-tech-away style.

Here’s how it’ll likely go down:

🔒 Yondr Pouch System

  • At entry, you’ll be handed a soft Yondr pouch.
  • Your phone goes inside and gets magnetically sealed.
  • You keep it on your person, but you can’t use it until you leave or enter a designated phone zone.
  • No unlocking unless there’s an emergency or your mate needs rescuing from a circle pit concussion.

It’s not draconian — it’s deliberate.

💬 Why the Hell Are WARGASM Doing This?

Let’s hear it from the band themselves. When the announcement dropped, Sam Matlock posted:

“We’re not here to sell you a product. We’re here to f**ing connect. You don’t need a phone for that. You need eyes, ears, and your fists in the air.”*

🔥 Goosebumps, right?

They’ve made it clear — this isn’t about being anti-technology. It’s about creating a space where people are locked into the moment, where the only thing lighting up the venue is the strobe, not your notifications.

Milkie Way added:

“We want you to dance, scream, fall over, kiss strangers — do everything but scroll. Let’s make memories we can’t upload.”

Tidy. That’s the kinda punk energy the scene’s been missing.

📸 The Gig Scene in 2025: Are Phones Ruining It?

Alright, let’s have it — how many gigs have you been to recently where you couldn’t even see the stage for a wall of phones? We’ve all been there. It’s like watching your favourite band through someone else’s shaky hands.

Phones are incredible tools, no doubt — capturing moments, connecting fans, building communities. But they’ve also:

  • Flattened experiences into “content”
  • Made it harder to get lost in the music
  • Made mosh pits less mental
  • Turned emotional breakdowns into Instagram boomerangs

WARGASM are calling that out. They’re not banning phones out of spite — they’re protecting the magic of the moment.

Let’s not forget: concerts are sacred chaos. And maybe, just maybe, they’re better without someone filming the chorus 17 times.

🎟️ Fan Reactions: Ecstatic or Eyerolls?

As you’d expect, the fanbase was split harder than a circle pit during the breakdown.

✅ The Lovers

  • “YES MUN! Finally a gig where I don’t get elbowed by a phone holder.”
  • “Phones ruin everything — give me sweaty eye contact over Instagram any day.”
  • “This feels like the 90s again. Pure energy, no filters. Let’s goooo!”

❌ The Haters

  • “What if I want to capture the moment? It’s mine too!”
  • “I feel anxious without my phone. What if there’s an emergency?”
  • “Sounds elitist. Not everyone can afford to see bands more than once.”

It’s a fair split, and WARGASM aren’t pretending it’s going to please everyone. But that’s never been their goal. They’re pushing boundaries, and that’s what punk’s all about.

🧠 The Psychology of Presence at Gigs

Here’s where it gets juicy. Let’s drop some actual brainy facts in between the riff worship.

  • Studies show we retain memories better when we’re not distracted by our phones.
  • Concertgoers report stronger emotional highs when they’re immersed — not recording.
  • The dopamine hit of live music is blunted by digital multitasking.

In short: your brain wants you to be there — not documenting. WARGASM’s move isn’t just loud — it’s scientifically sound.

🔥 The Punk Ethos: Is This the New Rebellion?

Back in the day, punk was about spitting in the face of the mainstream. Today’s version? It might just be saying “no thanks” to attention economies, content addiction, and algorithm-chasing nonsense.

By banning phones, WARGASM are reclaiming the moment.
It’s not nostalgia — it’s resistance.

When Sam screams into the mic and Milkie launches into the crowd, you’re not watching it happen — you’re in it.

🤔 But What About Accessibility & Safety?

Here’s the real talk — not everyone loves this idea, and not everyone can love it.

Some fans rely on their phones for:

  • Accessibility apps (like captions, navigation, or sensory warnings)
  • Medical communication
  • Anxiety relief

The good news? WARGASM’s team say they’re working with Yondr and venue staff to make sure:

  • Emergency access is easy
  • Accessibility needs are met
  • No fan is left in the lurch

This ain’t about gatekeeping — it’s about rethinking the live music space for everyone.

📍 Where’s It Happening?

At the time of writing, WARGASM’s phone-free show is planned for London this summer. But there are rumblings it could become a full tour if it lands well.

Some rumours flying around the scene:

  • A secret Cardiff club show? 🏴
  • A Glasto after-hours tent takeover? 🎪
  • Maybe even a support slot with another major act who’s down for the digital detox?

We’re watching this space like hawks.

🧨 What Happens When You Can’t Film the Madness?

Here’s the beauty of it, butt — you become part of it.

  • No need to prove you were there — you were there.
  • No checking the time — you lost time.
  • No watching a screen — just sweat, sound, and solidarity.

This might not be the future of every show — but for some, it’s the rebirth of what live music used to feel like.

💥 WARGASM Are Leading the Charge

Let’s face it — it takes guts to tell a crowd of tech-addicted, TikTok-loving fans to bin their phones for a night. But that’s what WARGASM do — they challenge you, slap you in the face with a sonic sledgehammer, and then invite you to dance in the wreckage.

Whether it works or not? Who knows.

But it’s bold, brave, and unapologetically WARGASM.

🤘 Final Thoughts: Are You Ready to Unplug?

Imagine this:
You walk into the venue. No phone. No signal. Just noise.
The bass hits. The lights go out. You’re not checking notifications — you’re screaming the lyrics.
You don’t watch the gig. You live it.

That’s what WARGASM are offering.
A chance to disconnect… so you can reconnect. 💥

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
