There are festival traditions.
There are sacred festival traditions.
And then there is Shit Shirt Friday at Steelhouse Festival โ the glorious annual moment when thousands of rock fans climb a Welsh mountain dressed like a tropical cocktail menu designed during a power cut.
Forget black band shirts. Forget leather jackets. Forget looking cool in front of your favourite guitarist.
For one day only, the Steelhouse crowd throws taste, dignity and basic colour coordination straight off the side of Hafod-y-Dafal Farm.
And honestly?
It is absolutely magnificent. ๐ค๐
๐บ THE LOUDER THE SHIRT, THE BETTER
Shit Shirt Friday is exactly what it sounds like.
Festival-goers are encouraged to dig through the darkest corners of their wardrobes and find the most outrageous, offensive-to-the-eyes, gloriously terrible shirt they own.
We are talking:
- Hawaiian shirts loud enough to frighten livestock
- Flamingos, pineapples and suspicious tropical birds
- Leopard print that should probably require a licence
- Patterns resembling your nanโs curtains
- Shirts bought on holiday after one too many pints
- Colours that have never previously agreed to appear together
- Clothing capable of being seen from the International Space Station
There are no strict rules.
The only requirement is that when your mates see the shirt, they immediately shout:
โWhat the bloody hell are you wearing?โ
That is when you know you have nailed it.
๐ธ STEELHOUSE: WHERE ROCK MEETS WARDROBE CHAOS
Steelhouse Festival has always been about far more than the bands onstage.
Yes, the riffs are enormous.
Yes, the views from the mountain are stunning.
Yes, there is always a strong chance of experiencing sunshine, rain, wind and fog before lunchtime.
But what makes Steelhouse special is the community.
It is the familiar faces returning year after year, the campsite laughs, the bar conversations, the friendships made in waterproof boots and the strange little traditions that become part of the festivalโs identity.
Shit Shirt Friday is one of those traditions.
For a festival crowd usually dressed almost entirely in black, seeing the mountain suddenly explode with neon flowers, tropical prints and questionable button-up monstrosities is a beautiful sight.
It looks like a rock festival has collided with a budget Caribbean cruise.
And we mean that as the highest possible compliment.
๐บ BAD SHIRTS, BIG RIFFS AND BEAUTIFUL CHAOS
There is something brilliantly unifying about everyone deliberately dressing badly.
Nobody is worried about looking fashionable.
Nobody is trying to appear too cool.
Everyone is simply there to have a laugh, enjoy the music and celebrate being part of one of the friendliest festival communities in the country.
You might see a bloke in a shirt covered in rubber ducks watching a blistering guitar solo.
You might spot someone dressed like a sofa from 1977 ordering a pint.
You may even witness an entire group wearing matching shirts so offensive that nearby aircraft are forced to change course.
That is the magic of Shit Shirt Friday.
For a few beautiful hours, fashion is dead.
Only riffs remain.
๐ธ THE RIFF REPORT WANTS TO SEE YOUR WORST
If you are heading to Steelhouse Festival and taking part in Shit Shirt Friday, make sure you capture the evidence.
The Riff Report wants to see the absolute worst of the worst.
We want shirts that cause headaches.
We want shirts that make photographers adjust their camera settings.
We want shirts that could potentially guide emergency services to the festival site during heavy fog.
Tag The Riff Report in your photos and show us what you have brought to the mountain.
There may not be an official trophy, but somewhere out there one brave festival-goer will become the unofficial King, Queen or Supreme Overlord of the Shit Shirts.
Wear that title with pride.
And preferably with clashing shorts.
๐ฆ๏ธ FESTIVAL FASHION, STEELHOUSE STYLE
Of course, this is Steelhouse Festival, so dressing for the weather remains an extreme sport.
Your terrible shirt may need to be paired with:
- A waterproof jacket
- Mud-covered boots
- Three additional layers
- Sunglasses
- Emergency suncream
- A woolly hat
- All of the above within the same afternoon
But do not let the Welsh weather hide your masterpiece.
Throw the shirt over your hoodie.
Wear it beneath a transparent poncho.
Button it around your waist like a tropical superhero cape.
Whatever happens, make sure the world sees it.
You did not spend ยฃ4.99 in a charity shop on a shirt covered in dancing parrots just to keep it hidden.
๐ค MORE THAN JUST A SILLY SHIRT
It may sound ridiculous โ and it absolutely is โ but traditions like Shit Shirt Friday are a big part of what makes festivals memorable.
Years later, you may forget exactly what time a band played.
You may forget which campsite you stayed in.
You may even forget how many trips you made to the bar.
But you will remember the year your mate wore a shirt featuring thirty-seven flamingos and accidentally became a festival celebrity.
You will remember strangers stopping for photographs.
You will remember entire groups laughing together while standing halfway up a Welsh mountain.
That sense of fun is what Steelhouse does so well.
It is not just a music festival.
It is a community gathering powered by massive guitars, mountain air, questionable weather and some of the worst clothing ever manufactured.
๐ฉ๐ GET THE SHIT SHIRT READY
So, Steelhouse rockers, the challenge has been set.
Open the wardrobe.
Check the charity shops.
Raid your dadโs holiday clothing collection.
Find the shirt that makes your family ask difficult questions.
Then wear it proudly.
Shit Shirt Friday is not about looking good.
It is about having fun, supporting the festival spirit and creating the kind of glorious chaos that could only happen at Steelhouse.
Stay safe.
Drink plenty of water.
Look after your mates.
Respect the mountain.
And remember the most important rule of all:
The worse the shirt, the better the festival.
See you on the mountain, you magnificent fashion disasters.
Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Terribly Dressed. ๐ค๐ฅ๐ฉ๐
