Some rock stories are about sold-out stadiums, legendary albums and unforgettable encores. Others remind us that even our greatest musical heroes are only human.
In a deeply emotional revelation, Phil Collins has spoken publicly about a terrifying health battle that nearly claimed his life in 2024. The former Genesis frontman and one of Britain’s most successful solo artists revealed that his body began shutting down, leaving family, friends and medical staff fearing the very worst.

“My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye.”
It’s a heartbreaking admission from a man whose music has soundtracked generations, and one that has left fans around the world stunned.
A Health Battle Hidden From the Spotlight
Phil Collins has faced serious health challenges for many years.
Following spinal surgery, nerve damage and ongoing mobility issues, the legendary drummer and singer has gradually stepped away from performing. Fans witnessed his declining health during Genesis’ final reunion tour, where he performed seated while his son, Nic Collins, took over behind the drum kit.
Despite his determination to keep performing, Collins’ health continued to deteriorate away from the public eye.
Now, he has revealed just how close he came to losing his life during a devastating medical emergency in 2024.
According to Collins, his kidneys began failing before multiple organs started shutting down. The situation became so critical that those closest to him believed they were preparing to say their final goodbyes.
For someone who has spent more than five decades entertaining millions, it’s an incredibly sobering moment.

- Invisible Touch
- We Can’t Dance
At the same time, Collins launched one of the most successful solo careers in music history.
His catalogue includes timeless hits such as:

With hundreds of millions of records sold worldwide, Grammy Awards, an Academy Award and countless other honours, Collins has cemented himself as one of Britain’s greatest-ever musicians.
The Drum Kit That Changed Rock
Although many know Phil Collins as an iconic singer, musicians often point to his drumming as being just as influential.
His explosive fills, precision timing and unmistakable playing style helped define progressive rock before later becoming a blueprint for countless pop and rock drummers.
Even after nerve damage left him unable to play drums properly, Collins continued to perform because of his love for music and his connection with audiences.
Watching his son Nic take over drumming duties during Genesis’ farewell tour became one of the most emotional moments in modern rock history—a symbolic passing of the torch that left many fans in tears.
