โWorse forwards than backwardsโ? Try โworse when your site crashes and nobody gets whatโs going on.โ
Slipknot fans were tamping this weekend after a mysterious countdown clock on the bandโs cryptic teaser site 742617000027.net hit zero… and then? Absolutely. Bugger. All. ๐ตโ๐ซ
๐ THE COUNTDOWN TOโฆ CONFUSION?
Since late June, Maggots worldwide had been glued to the enigmatic Slipknot site, which looked like it was ripped straight out of a hackerโs MySpace page in 2003. Password-protected with the phrase โcomeplaydyingโ (because of course it was), the site slowly revealed haunting imagery from the bandโs early days โ blurred-out masks, retro vibes, and the cryptic phrase:
“Worse forwards than backwards.”
(Which, depending on who you ask, either meant nothing, or was a nod to the bandโs freaky sonic backmasking in the ’90s.)
Naturally, theories ran wild:
๐ฉธ A new single?
๐ฉธ Reunion with old members?
๐ฉธ A horror game?
๐ฉธ A deluxe reissue of their 1999 self-titled album?
๐ฟ WHAT DID IT ACTUALLY REVEAL?
After the countdown hit zero on July 21 at 3PM ET, crickets. Servers buckled. Socials stayed silent. Fans stared into the abyss. The site blinked, stuttered, and ultimatelyโฆ imploded under pressure like a drum kit in a mosh pit.
Later, it turned out the site was meant to reveal something pretty damn cool: a limited edition โblood-filledโ 25th anniversary vinyl box set of their self-titled 1999 debut. SIX red LPs, 59 tracks total, unseen archival imagery, live rarities, those legendary Indigo Ranch demos, and nine new collector cards.
Sounds lush, right?
Well, too bad โ only 100 were made. And by the time anyone knew what was going on, they were long gone. Poof. Sold out faster than you can say “Spit It Out.”
๐คฌ FANS REACT: TAMPS AND TEARS
Slipknot fans flooded forums, Reddit, and X/Twitter to vent their fury. Comments ranged from:
โWhat the hell just happened?โ
โI had the password. I had the time. I had NOTHING.โ
โ100 copies? For THE Slipknot? Are we a joke to you?โ
There were reports of people trying to smash refresh like Joey Jordison used to smash double kicks, to no avail. Some thought it was a viral stunt. Others blamed clowns (looking at you, Shawn).
๐ง MASTERCLASS IN MYSTERY OR MESS?
To be fair, Slipknot has always danced on the fine line between performance art and chaotic mind games. But this one? Fans are calling it more of a glitch in the matrix than a maggot masterpiece.
Could this all have been planned? Could the chaos be the art? Or did someone just underestimate the power of a global Slipknot fandom trying to click on one website at the same time?
One thingโs for sure: if this was a teaser for something bigger coming โ and letโs face it, it probably is โ the Knot better have more than 100 of it next time ๐ค
๐ฉธ FINAL THOUGHTS FROM THE PIT
Slipknotโs 25th anniversary is a monumental moment in metal history. That 1999 debut changed the face of nu-metal, shoved Iowa madness into the mainstream, and gave the world a nine-headed beast that STILL sells out arenas.
But this box set? This โblink and you missed itโ blood-splattered collectorโs item? It felt like a VIP pass to hell โ with only 100 people allowed in.
More chaos coming? Probably.
More vinyl, please? DEFINITELY.
Stay tuned, Maggots โ justโฆ maybe donโt hold your breath next time ๐ซฃ
