What’s occurring, mun? Well, Sweden’s about to get louder than a bin joust at Steelhouse after midnight. The Polar Music Prize – the posh ceremony usually reserved for tuxedos, champagne flutes and polite clapping – has only gone and booked Ghost and Adam Lambert to perform at this year’s bash in Stockholm. And not just for anyone… but to honour the mighty Queen. 🏆🎸

You read that right. Sweden’s most theatrical metal export and the glam-rock powerhouse who’s kept Freddie Mercury’s spirit alive are colliding on one stage. It’s gonna be camp, it’s gonna be spooky, and it’s gonna be properly lush.

🏆 The Polar Music Prize: The “Nobel Prize of Rock” (Sort Of)

The Polar Music Prize was founded back in 1989 by Stig Anderson – ABBA’s manager, lyricist, and the man who basically turned Sweden into a global pop factory. His vision was simple: create an award that honoured all music – from classical to punk, opera to metal.

Every year, they pick a handful of winners from wildly different genres. The list of past recipients reads like the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame had a baby with a classical conservatory:

  • Metallica (2018) – the first metal band to scoop the prize. Lars Ulrich cried, James Hetfield looked like he wanted a pint instead.
  • Led Zeppelin (2006) – though John Paul Jones turned up looking bewildered, wondering if he’d wandered into the wrong building.
  • Paul McCartney (1992) – he skipped it that year, but still pocketed the cheque. Proper Beatle behaviour.
  • Elton John (1995) – turned the Swedish royal gala into a glitter parade.
  • Chuck Berry (2014) – the godfather of rock ‘n’ roll himself.

It’s one of those events where tuxedos meet leather jackets, and the Swedish royals clap politely while some doom metal riff rattles the chandeliers. Only in Sweden, mun.

👑 Why Queen Are Getting the Nod in 2025

Let’s be honest – if any band deserves this prize, it’s Queen. Few groups tick all the boxes the Polar Music Prize loves:

  • Genre-blending pioneers – They fused opera, hard rock, pop, prog, disco, funk and camp theatre, sometimes all in one song. (Bohemian Rhapsody still sounds like six bands crammed into one studio after too many pints).
  • Global impact – From Wembley ’86 to Live Aid ’85, Queen became the gold standard of arena spectacle.
  • Longevity – Even after Freddie’s passing in 1991, the band’s legacy hasn’t dimmed.
  • Scandinavian love – Sweden has always adored Queen. The band played Gothenburg and Stockholm multiple times in the ’70s and ’80s, and Swedish fans were among the first to embrace the Hot Space funk era when everyone else was tamping.

In short: Queen changed the rules of rock and did it with moustaches, sequins and riffs that still get football stadiums chanting “We Will Rock You” to this day. Proper job.

🎤 Adam Lambert: The Glam Torchbearer

When Queen lost Freddie, many said it was game over. Who could possibly fill those shoes (or that leotard)? Enter Adam Lambert – the runner-up from American Idol who turned out to be one of the best live singers of his generation.

Since 2011, Lambert has toured globally with Queen, winning over sceptics and creating a whole new generation of fans. Here’s why he works:

  • Respect, not imitation – He never tries to be Freddie. He honours the legacy while bringing his own glam diva flair.
  • Vocal fireworks – The bloke can hit notes so high dogs in Trecco Bay start barking.
  • Stage presence – From leather jackets to diamond-encrusted crowns, Lambert knows how to strut like a king.

Even Brian May – famously picky about anyone messing with Freddie’s songs – has called Lambert “a gift from God.” High praise from a man with hair bigger than Snowdonia.

👻 Ghost: Sweden’s Dark Rock Priests

Now, on the other side of the stage: Ghost, Sweden’s spookiest export since IKEA’s haunted wardrobe. Led by Tobias Forge (aka Papa Emeritus IV), Ghost have built their empire on theatrical satanic camp mixed with ridiculously catchy hard rock.

Why they’re perfect for a Queen tribute:

  • Theatrical DNA – Queen invented the blueprint for mixing rock with camp theatre. Ghost are the spiritual successors, turning every show into a ritual.
  • Vocal power – Forge may not hit Lambert’s skyscraper notes, but his baritone brings the drama.
  • Swedish pride – Ghost representing Sweden on home turf while honouring one of the biggest rock bands ever? Tidy cultural moment.
  • Visual spectacle – Expect ghouls in robes, stained-glass backdrops, and Lambert in sequins. That’s what I call a mash-up.

Ghost covering Queen will either be the most genius thing since sliced bara brith, or it’ll melt posh Swedish brains faster than a pint of Dragon Soup. Either way, we win.

🎶 The Fantasy Setlist: What Might Happen?

We don’t know what songs they’ll play yet, but let’s have a cheeky punt:

  1. “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Lambert on vocals, Ghost’s choirs handling the operatic middle bit. Guaranteed.
  2. “We Will Rock You” – Stomp, stomp, clap, but with Ghost’s ghouls turning it into a gothic chant.
  3. “Radio Ga Ga” – Perfect for Lambert’s voice and Ghost’s synth-rock vibe.
  4. “The Show Must Go On” – The big emotional closer. Forge’s darker tone with Lambert’s skyscraper vocals. Goosebumps guaranteed.
  5. Wildcard: Ghost covering “Another One Bites the Dust” with disco-metal grooves. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t mosh to that.

🥂 Rock Meets Royalty: The Ceremony Vibe

Here’s what makes the Polar Music Prize hilarious in the best way:

  • The King and Queen of Sweden are literally sat in the front row, clapping politely while Ghost sing about Lucifer.
  • The room is half tuxedos, half leather jackets. It looks like a wedding reception where someone accidentally booked the wrong band.
  • Past ceremonies have seen ABBA songs mashed with jazz improvisations. This one will see corpse paint and glitter colliding.

Imagine Brian May tearing up as Lambert belts Somebody to Love, while Tobias Forge thanks Satan in front of actual royalty. What a time to be alive.

🤘 Why This Matters for Rock

This isn’t just a tribute performance. It’s a statement:

  • Rock is still culturally relevant – Too many snooty types write off rock as “dad music.” This shows the establishment is still bowing to guitars and choruses.
  • Theatrical rock lives on – Queen passed the torch, Ghost and Lambert are carrying it.
  • Sweden = rock powerhouse – From ABBA to Ghost to Sabaton, Sweden keeps punching above its weight musically.

If the Polar Music Prize is about honouring artists who shape global culture, then Queen (and the artists celebrating them) fit the bill perfectly.

🕺 Fan Reactions: Chaos Online

Twitter/X, TikTok, and Instagram have already gone feral over this announcement. Some highlights we’ve spotted:

  • “Ghost covering Queen? This is either gonna heal me or break me.”
  • “Imagine if Tobias sings I Want to Break Free in full drag. Sweden won’t recover.”
  • “Lambert and Forge on the same stage? My gay gothic heart can’t cope.”
  • “The royals are not ready for corpse paint.”

Honestly, it’s already iconic and it hasn’t even happened yet.

🏴 The Welsh Bit (Because Why Not)

If this was happening in Cardiff instead of Stockholm, you know it would end differently:

  • Ghost would get lost in Cathays trying to find the venue.
  • Adam Lambert would belt out We Are the Champions and someone in the crowd would start a “Wales! Wales!” chant.
  • The Polar Music Prize buffet would just be a Greggs sausage roll platter.
  • Brian May would still be there, but in a daft Ddraig Goch hat.

Diolch a nos da, Stockholm. You missed out.

🔮 Final Thoughts: A Proper Job Tribute

The Polar Music Prize ceremony is shaping up to be one of the most bizarre, brilliant nights in rock history. Queen finally get the recognition they deserve from Sweden’s musical elite, Adam Lambert proves once again he’s the right man to carry Freddie’s flame, and Ghost show the world why theatrical rock didn’t die with the ’70s.

It’s camp, it’s dramatic, it’s over the top. In other words: it’s exactly what Queen would’ve wanted. 👑🎶

C’mon butt – raise your pint. This one’s gonna be lush. 🍻

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
