Forget looking across the Atlantic for the next big thing — some of the most exciting noise in rock and metal is being made right here in Wales.

From sweaty Cardiff venues and Swansea rehearsal rooms to the valleys, North Wales and beyond, the Welsh underground is absolutely bursting with riffs.

And we bloody love to see it. 🐉🔥

Wales has never exactly struggled when it comes to producing world-class rock bands.

We’ve given the planet Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Feeder, Bullet For My Valentine, Funeral For A Friend, Skindred, Those Damn Crows and plenty more besides.

But we’re not here for a history lesson.

We’re looking at what’s happening NOW.

The bands grafting around the country.

The bands smashing smaller venues.

The bands appearing on festival stages.

The bands getting louder.

And, most importantly, the bands we reckon rock fans should be paying serious attention to.

So grab yourself a pint, turn the speakers up until the neighbours start composing an angry Facebook post and join The Riff Report as we dive into some of the best newer and rising Welsh rock and metal bands making noise in 2026.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. 🐉🤘

🔥 King Kraken

If you’re talking about the modern Welsh heavy rock scene, King Kraken absolutely deserve to be part of the conversation.

These South Wales riff monsters have been steadily building a reputation for enormous guitars, thundering grooves and choruses designed to be screamed back from the middle of a festival crowd.

Their second album, March of the Gods, arrived in 2025 and pushed the band further into the national spotlight, picking up attention from the likes of Planet Rock and Kerrang!

Then came more new material, including tracks such as “Call To War” and “I Am The Apocalypse”.

Subtle?

Absolutely bloody not.

And that’s precisely why we like them.

King Kraken sound like someone fed a dragon several crates of energy drink before handing it a guitar.

Heavy. Loud. Unapologetic.

Exactly how Welsh metal should be.

Having also taken their riffs onto festival stages including Steelhouse, King Kraken increasingly feel like a band ready to kick another door down.

🐉 Riff Report verdict: Keep watching. The Kraken is very much awake.

🌑 Black Lakes

Another name flying the flag for South Wales is Black Lakes.

Formed in 2018, the band blend alternative metal, hard rock and darker modern influences into something that can sound absolutely enormous.

Their debut album For All We’ve Left Behind helped establish the band well beyond the Welsh scene, attracting radio attention and giving listeners a proper introduction to their atmospheric but muscular sound.

There’s melody.

There’s heaviness.

There’s darkness.

And there are enough massive guitars to upset your nan’s ornaments.

Live, they’re even better.

Black Lakes have been steadily working their way through venues and festivals, including a cracking appearance at Steelhouse Festival 2026, proving they’re more than capable of delivering those songs on a big stage.

They’re one of those bands where you watch them and think:

“Yeah… this could get considerably bigger.”

🤘 Riff Report verdict: Modern Welsh metal with serious potential.

⚡ Ffatri Jam

Now we’re heading north.

And things are getting wonderfully noisy.

Ffatri Jam are a bilingual hard-rock outfit emerging from Anglesey and Caernarfon, formed in 2022 and already attracting attention outside Wales.

Combining Welsh and English lyrics with proper guitar-driven rock gives the band an identity that feels unmistakably rooted in where they’re from.

And that’s something we absolutely love.

Welsh-language music shouldn’t be confined to any particular genre.

Why shouldn’t Cymraeg come blasting through an amplifier at ridiculous volume?

Exactly.

The band have already received recognition through BBC Introducing, including support from BBC Radio 1 Introducing Rock.

That’s a pretty tidy achievement for a band still relatively early in their journey.

🐉 Riff Report verdict: North Wales is making noise. Pay attention, mun.

🎸 The Stray Pursuit

Swansea enters the chat.

The Stray Pursuit are bringing alternative rock swagger from South West Wales, mixing big guitars with strong melodies and songs designed to stick around after you’ve heard them.

They’re part of a growing wave of younger Welsh guitar bands proving that rock isn’t remotely finished.

Because apparently somebody forgot to tell guitars they’re supposed to be dead.

Again.

For approximately the 4,763rd time.

The Stray Pursuit have already been highlighted among Wales’ emerging musical talent and continue building their reputation through releases and live performances.

There’s a polished accessibility to what they’re doing without losing the guitars that make rock fans pay attention.

🎤 Riff Report verdict: One to stick on the playlist immediately.

🧙‍♂️ Groom The Giant

Right.

Someone said “wizard grunge.”

You had us immediately.

Hailing from Llangollen, Groom The Giant are one of the more intriguing names bubbling away in the Welsh heavy scene.

Their sound has been described as wizard grunge, which frankly sounds like something you’d discover playing at 1am inside a tent at Bloodstock after drinking something questionable from a plastic cup.

And we mean that as the highest possible compliment.

More importantly, these lads aren’t merely collecting cool genre descriptions.

They’ve been putting the graft in.

Groom The Giant won the North Wales Metal 2 The Masses competition, earning themselves a coveted appearance on the New Blood Stage at Bloodstock 2026.

For emerging UK metal bands, that’s a massive opportunity.

Bloodstock’s New Blood Stage has become one of the country’s great launching pads for underground heavy music, putting bands directly in front of thousands of dedicated metal fans.

Winning your regional Metal 2 The Masses battle isn’t easy either.

So this lot clearly mean business.

⚔️ Riff Report verdict: Wizard grunge from Llangollen at Bloodstock. Only in Wales, mun.

🎶 Taran

Wales has always had a wonderfully healthy Welsh-language alternative scene, and Taran are another band helping keep that tradition moving forward.

Based around Cardiff’s music scene, their guitar-driven sound brings indie and alternative rock together while retaining a distinctly Welsh identity.

Their album Yn y Cymylau helped introduce the band to a wider audience, alongside attention from Welsh-language radio and the country’s thriving independent music community.

There’s something particularly brilliant about seeing younger Welsh artists embracing Cymraeg without treating it like some historical museum piece.

It’s alive.

It’s evolving.

And occasionally it’s attached to a massive bloody guitar amp.

Exactly as it should be.

🐉 Riff Report verdict: Cymraeg, guitars and attitude. Tidy.

🦋 Ratoon

Another name worth scribbling into your little black book of Welsh bands is Ratoon.

Emerging from South Wales with an indie-rock sound carrying a healthy streak of punk energy, the band introduced themselves properly with their debut EP Butterfly Effect.

There’s youthful energy running through what they do, with that brilliant feeling you get from bands who are still discovering exactly how far they can push things.

That’s often where some of the most exciting music happens.

Before everything becomes polished.

Before massive production budgets arrive.

Before somebody from management starts asking whether the chorus could be more “TikTok friendly”.

Just bands.

Songs.

Guitars.

Noise.

Perfect.

🔥 Riff Report verdict: Catch them while the venues are still small.

🌊 Breichiau Hir

If you fancy something moodier, heavier and considerably more atmospheric, Breichiau Hir should be firmly on your radar.

The Cardiff-based Welsh-language outfit have carved out their own corner of the alternative scene, creating emotionally charged music that doesn’t neatly sit inside one little genre box.

Their album Y Dwylo Uwchben earned recognition through the Welsh Music Prize, further highlighting just how much genuinely interesting alternative music is currently coming out of Wales.

This isn’t throwaway background rock.

It’s music you disappear into.

Dark rooms.

Loud headphones.

Rain hammering against the window.

Basically your average Welsh Tuesday.

🌧️🤘

🐉 Riff Report verdict: Atmospheric Welsh alternative rock with real depth.

💥 Panic Shack

Calling Panic Shack “new” is becoming increasingly difficult because these Cardiff punk troublemakers have been kicking doors open at an impressive rate.

But any conversation about the current generation of Welsh rock absolutely needs them involved.

Because they’re brilliant.

Chaotic.

Funny.

Sharp.

Unpredictable.

And gloriously uninterested in behaving themselves.

Their self-titled debut album became a major breakthrough moment, hitting No.1 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart and confirming that the buzz surrounding the band had developed into something considerably bigger.

But the heart of Panic Shack remains that brilliant live energy.

They feel like a gang.

And when you’re watching them, the audience becomes part of that gang.

That’s punk rock.

No unnecessary nonsense required.

🔥 Riff Report verdict: Cardiff chaos exported nationwide.

🤖 CELAVI

Now for something heavier.

CELAVI are a Bangor duo dragging industrial rock, alternative metal and nu-metal influences into the modern Welsh scene.

And yes — there’s Welsh-language material involved too.

Lovely stuff.

Their combination of electronic elements, crushing guitars and modern production puts them in a completely different corner of the Welsh rock landscape compared with some of the other bands here.

That’s exactly why they’re interesting.

The Welsh scene doesn’t need ten bands trying to become the next Stereophonics.

It needs weirdness.

Experimentation.

Industrial noise.

Punk.

Metal.

Grunge.

Welsh-language rock.

Bands smashing genres together until something new falls out.

CELAVI represent exactly that attitude.

They were also selected among the artists highlighted through Sound of Miwsig 2026, helping put another spotlight on emerging Welsh-language music.

🤘 Riff Report verdict: Industrial Welsh chaos. Turn it up.

🌧️🤘 Honourable Mention: Florence Black

Okay.

We’re cheating.

Florence Black aren’t exactly newcomers.

The Merthyr Tydfil trio have been grafting since 2012 and have become one of the strongest names in contemporary Welsh hard rock.

But there’s absolutely no way we’re writing about the current Welsh rock scene without giving them some love.

Because Florence Black are flying.

Albums including Weight of the World and Bed of Nails helped establish their reputation for massive riffs, bluesy swagger and thunderous live performances.

Then 2026 brought another chapter with Pouring Rain.

Their rise represents something important.

Welsh bands don’t need to abandon where they came from to make an impact beyond Wales.

You can come from Merthyr.

You can build your audience gig by gig.

You can graft.

And you can make increasingly bigger stages feel like home.

🐉 Riff Report verdict: Not new — but absolutely essential.

🐉 Wales Is Producing Some Bloody Brilliant Rock Music

Here’s the exciting bit.

This list barely scratches the surface.

There are bands currently rehearsing in garages, industrial units, bedrooms and tiny studios across Wales that we haven’t even discovered yet.

Some will disappear.

Some will remain cult favourites.

Some might be standing on the main stage of Download, Bloodstock or Steelhouse within the next few years.

That’s the beauty of following new music.

You don’t know where the journey ends.

And supporting emerging bands isn’t complicated.

Buy the ticket.

Buy the shirt.

Stream the record.

Share their posts.

Tell your mates.

And when they’re playing some tiny venue on a miserable Wednesday evening while the rain is coming sideways outside…

GO.

Because those sweaty little gigs are where scenes are built.

Welsh rock has an extraordinary history.

From the Manics and Stereophonics through Bullet For My Valentine, Funeral For A Friend, Skindred, Those Damn Crows and countless others, this tiny country has consistently produced bands capable of making an enormous amount of noise.

The next chapter is already happening.

King Kraken.

Black Lakes.

Ffatri Jam.

The Stray Pursuit.

Groom The Giant.

Taran.

Ratoon.

Breichiau Hir.

Panic Shack.

CELAVI.

Different sounds.

Different corners of Wales.

Same glorious obsession with making noise.

So next time somebody tells you “there aren’t any good new rock bands anymore”, point them towards Wales.

Then turn the volume up.

The dragon isn’t sleeping.

It’s plugged into a Marshall stack. 🐉🔥🤘

🎸 Who Have We Missed?

This is where The Riff Report community comes in.

Which new or emerging Welsh rock and metal bands should everybody be listening to?

Who have you discovered playing a tiny venue?

Who absolutely destroyed a festival stage?

And who’s going to be bloody enormous in a couple of years?

Drop your recommendations and let’s keep supporting Welsh music.

🐉 Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud.
