⚒️ Where to Eat, Drink, and Soak in the Brummie Chaos Before the Gig
It’s finally here, mun. Black Sabbath, the mighty architects of heavy metal, are heading Back to the Beginning with their FINAL hometown gig at Villa Park, Birmingham. The guitars will growl, the drums will shake the earth, and Ozzy might forget where he is halfway through—but we wouldn’t want it any other way, would we? 😈
Before you join the legion of metalheads descending on Aston, you need a plan. A pub plan. A food plan. A “line-your-stomach-before-you-windmill” plan. Whether you’re after a proper pint, a Brummie Balti, or just somewhere to charge your phone while eating chips the size of your face, we’ve got you covered.
Let’s paint the town black and feast before the Sabbath storm begins! 🎤
🍺 THE BEST PUBS NEAR VILLA PARK – PINTS & PREACHERS OF METAL
🔥 The Witton Arms
📍 Doulton Road, B6 6QN
This one’s practically legendary already. Right next to the stadium and absolutely heaving before matchdays and gigs. For Sabbath? It’ll be wall-to-wall denim, leather, and dads reliving Download 2006.
Expect: Loud tunes, louder punters, plastic cups, big beer garden.
Vibe: Mayhem in the best way.
Try: Carling (it’s Birmingham, c’mon), or a shot of JD if you’re feeling spicy.
🍻 The Aston Inn
📍 Witton Lane, B6 6QA
Directly across from the stadium. Cosy inside, sprawling beer garden outside. It’s a chilled spot to get the buzz going before Sabbath take the stage.
Expect: Pre-gig chatter, nods from fellow fans in vintage tour shirts.
Vibe: Laid-back but electric.
Try: A pint of Staropramen and chips if the kitchen’s open.
🏰 The Barton Arms (15-min walk but absolutely lush)
📍 144 High Street, B6 4UP
This place is a pub palace, built in 1901 with tiled murals, stained glass, and more beer taps than you can count. It’s also known for Thai food that’ll kick you in the tastebuds harder than Iommi’s guitar tone.
Expect: Sophisticated sips, a historic vibe, and spicy grub.
Vibe: Victorian elegance meets headbanger hunger.
Try: Thai green curry and a pint of Oakham Citra. Yes please.
🍺 The Yew Tree
📍 Brookvale Road, B6 7AR
A bit off the main fan trail but a cracking traditional pub. Friendly locals, decent prices, and a jukebox that might let you blast “Paranoid” if you time it right.
Expect: Pool tables, pork scratchings, no nonsense.
Vibe: Old-school boozer.
Try: Doom Bar or a cheeky John Smith’s.
🤘 The Holte Pub (Villa Park)
📍 Part of the stadium complex
If you’re inside the hospitality zone or get there early, this pub is sleek, stylish, and has the added bonus of being right on site. Expect queues though—metalheads are thirsty creatures.
Expect: Big screens, pumped-up crowd, pricey pints.
Vibe: Premium pre-match energy.
Try: Burgers and beers on tap.
🍽️ FOOD BEFORE THE RIFF STORM – EAT LIKE A BIRMINGHAM LEGEND
🍛 Aston Balti House
📍 47 Aston Hall Rd, B6 7LG
A Birmingham institution. Real-deal curries cooked fresh, none of that chain restaurant stuff. Tables fill up fast before Villa games, and it’ll be even busier with the Sabbath faithful.
Try: Chicken Madras, Pilau Rice, Peshwari Naan. Wear black, just in case of spills.
Spice level: Somewhere between “mildly warm” and “breathing fire like Dio”.
🍔 Villa Chippy
📍 Next to Witton Station
Need a quick bite? Grab a cone of chips or a sausage bap and get back to chanting outside the stadium. Classic pre-gig grease fest.
Try: Large chips with curry sauce and a battered sausage the size of a mic stand.
🥙 Khan’s Kebabish
📍 Witton Road
Legendarily messy, absolutely glorious. Late-night kebabs, naan wraps the size of your arm, and enough garlic sauce to ward off demons.
Try: Lamb doner naan wrap with mint sauce.
Warning: You will end up eating half of it on the pavement outside Villa Park.
🍕 Munchies Pizza & Grill
📍 108 Witton Rd, B6 7BZ
Affordable, cheesy, and open late. Sometimes that’s all you need.
Try: Pepperoni pizza slice and chips with a side of “I’m-too-hungry-to-wait”.
🧆 Shah’s Fast Food
📍 Opposite Witton Station
Great fried chicken, burgers, and veggie options. Friendly staff and proper good vibes.
Try: Chicken fillet burger meal – crispier than Sabbath’s hi-hats.
🍽️ BONUS ROUND – IF YOU’RE COMING FROM BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE
You might be landing at New Street Station and heading to Villa Park via train (Witton Station is just 10 mins from the ground). In that case, here are some tasty central stops:
🍻 The Wellington
📍 Bennett’s Hill
Cask ale heaven. Over 15 rotating pumps. No music, just proper pints and pub banter.
🍺 The Head of Steam
📍 New Street
Trendy but not snobby. Craft beer galore, and the food’s surprisingly lush.
🧢 Peaky Blinder Bar
📍 John Bright Street
Birmingham-themed cocktails, Peaky props everywhere. Touristy? Yeah. Fun? Also yeah.
🕖 TIMING YOUR FEASTING FRENZY
- Gates open? Usually around 5–6pm.
- Support acts? Expect at least one, probably a Brummie banger or classic metal icon.
- Sabbath on stage? Likely 8:30–9pm. Don’t be late, or you’ll hear the riffs from the queue and we’ll all be tamping for you.
🖤 DON’T FORGET:
- Toilet break before gates – queueing post-pint is not for the weak.
- Cash for chip shops – some don’t take card.
- Take pics of your food – then put your phone away when Ozzy takes the stage, yeah?
🎤 THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
Villa Park is about to shake under the weight of Sabbath’s riffs one last time. Whether you’re grabbing a Balti, necking a pint, or smashing a kebab with your face, just remember:
This is more than a gig.
It’s a celebration of metal’s birth.
It’s Black Sabbath, back in Brum.
And it’s going to be bloody loud, legendary, and lush.
See you in the beer garden, ya beautiful riff-loving maniacs.
