โHow hard can it be to put up a few tents in a field?โ โ said no one who’s ever worked on Glastonbury Festival ๐
Behind the glitter, guitars, and gallons of cider lies one of the biggest build operations in the world of music. Weโre talking 250+ stages, over 1,300 toilets, 8km of fencing, and enough wiring to lasso the moon. And it doesnโt happen overnight…
Letโs take a peek at how the Glasto machine roars to life โ one mud-splattered day at a time.
๐๏ธ March โ The Countdown Begins (T-minus 12 weeks)
- The first digger rolls in while most of us are still scraping frost off the windscreen.
- Priority number one: drainage and ground prep. Glastoโs infamous for its lakes of mud, so they start by prepping the turf for heavy footfall.
- The โsuperfenceโ gets delivered. 8km of steel anti-climb security fencing. No ticket? No chance, butt ๐
- Water pipes and electric cabling begin snaking under the fields. 5,000 taps and hundreds of showers need power and pressure.
- Meanwhile, festival HQ is already buzzing with spreadsheets, laminates, and caffeine-fuelled chaos.
๐ ๏ธ April โ The Skeleton Takes Shape (T-minus 8โ10 weeks)
- Major infrastructure starts going up:
- Roadways laid out for emergency vehicles and tractors.
- Crew accommodation compounds pop up โ think portacabins, not glamping pods!
- First visual signs of Glasto rise from the fields: the Pyramid Stage scaffold begins its annual transformation.
- Other biggies like the Other Stage, West Holts, and Arcadiaโs flame-spewing monstrosity start to form.
- Crew are living on-site full-time now. The vibe? โTired but vibingโ ๐
๐ก May โ Itโs ALIVE (T-minus 4โ6 weeks)
- The festival becomes a living breathing thing.
- Stage crews, sound engineers, lighting techs, caterers, fence painters, carpenters, and even gardeners all descend.
- Art installations like Block9, The Parkโs ribbon tower, and Shangri-Laโs wild builds start turning into wild, colourful dreamscapes.
- Toilets (yes, lots) are lined up by the thousand. Portaloo Tetris becomes a real and terrible game.
- 1000s of cables, lights, solar panels, bunting, fairy lights, and flaming pyrotechnics get rigged.
- The Pyramidโs audio and video setup begins. Big names need big production.
๐ป June โ The Final Push (T-minus 2โ3 weeks)
- 50,000+ staff and volunteers are now working on site. Thatโs more than the population of Merthyr! ๐ฒ
- Food vendors and bars start loading in. Crew cider stashes double in size.
- Signage, maps, fencing paint, and accessibility routes are finalised.
- Final touches:
- Trash zones and recycling bins.
- Medical tents and welfare services.
- Flags, bunting, random pianos, and the odd mirrored snail sculpture.
- The BBC arrive to rig up their broadcast setups, towers, and drone zones ๐ฅ
๐ง One Week Before โ Itโs Glasto, Baby!
- Sound checks blast across Worthy Farm. If youโre in Pilton, your cows are now into drum & bass.
- Security teams roll in en masse.
- Crew and artists start rehearsing. Expect celeb sightings in hi-vis ๐ฆบ
- Weather reports are glued to every clipboard. โWill it rain?โ is now a full-blown religion.
- Artistsโ dressing rooms and backstage bars get stocked. Including emergency glitter, obviously โจ
๐ช Gates Open โ Welcome to the City of Dreams (Wednesday)
- 210,000+ humans flood in like a psychedelic stampede.
- And somehowโฆ it all just works.
- Pyramid stands proud. Arcadia breathes fire. The ciderโs cold, the bass is heavy, and youโre already sunburnt.
๐งน Post-Fest โ The Big Clean-Up (6 Weeks+)
- Itโs not over when the last encore fadesโฆ
- Over 1,300 clean-up volunteers take on the mountain of tents, glitter, gas canisters, and mystery socks.
- Each stage is dismantled piece by piece, with priority given to recycling and rewilding the fields ๐ฑ
- Michael Eavis himself usually drives around on his tractor, grinning like a proud grandad.
๐ค So How Do They Pull It Off?
Because Glastonbury isnโt just a festival. Itโs:
- A miniature city with its own roads, power grid, water supply, and postcode.
- Run by a non-profit team with a passion for music, charity, and organised chaos.
- Fuelled by volunteers, dreamers, planners, grafters, and rock โnโ roll maniacs.
๐งโโ๏ธ Bonus: Weird Things Spotted During the Build
- A llama on a leash called Keith ๐ฆ
- Someone welding a disco ball onto a skip
- A bar built entirely out of hay bales and ironing boards
- A man covered head to toe in mirrors giving motivational speeches to a digger
- And once, a rogue badger that shut down a crew shower block for 3 days. Legend.
๐ค Final Thoughts
So next time you’re sipping a lukewarm beer watching Elton, Metallica, or Dua Lipa belt it out on the Pyramid โ remember the army who built the stage beneath them, the wires, the bogs, and the bunting.
This isnโt just a weekend party in a field.
This is Glastonbury. And it takes half a year of blood, sweat and cider to make the magic happen ๐ป
