Ah, TGI Fridays.
Once the loudest, flashiest, most outrageously over-the-top place to eat in the UK that wasnโt a themed rollercoaster diner or a Toby Carvery on payday. If you grew up anywhere between the late โ90s and early 2010s, chances are TGI Fridays was your first taste of โAmerican foodโ โ and mate, we were OBSESSED.
So pull up a booth, order a Cherry Coke so full of syrup it buzzed like a Slipknot chorus, and letโs dive into the glitzy, cheese-smothered history of the chain that made every day feel like a Friday. ๐๐๐
๐ญ Back When It Was The Place To Be
TGI Fridays in its prime was more than just a restaurant. It was a flipping experience. You didnโt just go there to eat โ you went for:
๐Birthday singalongs so loud it felt like Bon Jovi was back on tour ๐ง Towering burgers stacked like Jenga sets made of beef ๐ธ Cocktails with names like โElectric Lemonadeโ and โMudslide Mayhemโ ๐งโ๐ค Waitstaff covered in flair badges like they were in a ska-punk band ๐ That iconic energy that made even a Tuesday night feel like Mardi Gras
Weโre talking bottomless apps, neon lights, and menus the size of phone books. And donโt even pretend you didnโt beg your parents for the ultimate triple combo โ chicken fingers, wings, AND mozzarella dippers. Tidy! ๐
๐บ๐ธ Americana Overload (In The Best Way)
For us Brits, TGI Fridays was like walking into a theme park where the rides were chicken and booze. It was loud, unapologetic, and cheesier than a Nickelback greatest hits CD.
They had Jack Danielโs glaze on everything โ ribs, chicken, steak, possibly even the ice cream. The portions were big enough to feed a rugby team, and every dish came with either curly fries, waffle fries or a side of diabetes.
If you were posh (or trying to impress a date), you ordered the steak. If you were 13 and on a school trip to the big city, you begged for a Cookie Dough Sundae the size of Yr Wyddfa.
๐ The Golden Age: 1999โ2012
Between 1999 and 2012, TGI Fridays had the burger game on lockdown. Wetherspoons was still trying to figure out what nachos were, and Nandoโs hadnโt taken over the spice-loving masses just yet.
Fridays was the spot for:
๐ Post-GCSE celebrations ๐๏ธ Post-shopping feasts in retail parks ๐ Break-up dinners (โLetโs get one last Jack Danielโs chicken before we go our separate waysโฆโ) ๐ Chaotic group birthdays where they brought out a sombrero and sang so loud your soul left your body
Honestly, if you didnโt go to a Fridays at least once a month, were you even living?
๐ฌ Soโฆ What Happened?
Hereโs the tea, mun. TGI Fridays got a bitโฆ lost.
๐ธ Prices crept up ๐ Menus changed ๐ฝ๏ธ Other chains got cooler โ Five Guys, Nandoโs, Honest Burger, even Greggs became a serious competitor (and rightly so โ sausage rolls forever) ๐ด The vibe started to go. The birthday hype? Gone. The flair-covered waiters? Replaced by folks just trying to survive the dinner rush.
The once buzzing booths started to feel a bitโฆ dated. Like your uncle who still wears Ed Hardy and quotes The Hangover.
And when you strip away the noise, all that was left was okay-ish food at premium prices. The magic faded.
๐ด Still Clinging On โ Just Aboutโฆ
Youโll still find the odd Fridays hanging on in retail parks or airport terminals, bless โem. Thereโs one in Cardiff, still doing its thing. Still got neon signs. Still pushing cocktails. Still doing that weird โHappy Birthdayโ chant that feels like a summoning ritual. ๐ฎ๐
But itโs not what it once was.
The flair is gone.
The noveltyโs faded.
And the world has moved on to bao buns, smashed burgers, and โartisanโ this-and-that.
๐ But Donโt Pretend You Donโt Miss It
Letโs be honest โ we all secretly miss the old Fridays. The stupidly big menus. The questionable cocktails. The way the staff made you feel like a rockstar even if you were just there for a ยฃ5 dessert.
You miss:
That sugar rush from a frozen raspberry daiquiri The sizzling sound of fajitas arriving at the next table Playing โwill I regret this?โ every time you ordered their creamy pasta bowls Getting way too excited for loaded potato skins like they were Michelin-starred snacks
You even miss the birthday songs. Go on, admit it. We wonโt tell. ๐
๐น Fridays Gave Us Something
It gave us a weird, wonderful hybrid of American excess and British cringe. A place where you could wear a party hat unironically, eat dessert first, and clap for someone elseโs birthday while halfway through a mudslide cocktail.
And for that โ we salute you, TGI Fridays. ๐ซก๐ธ
๐ค Final Thoughts From The Riff Report Booth
If we could bottle that early 2000s TGI Fridays energy โ we would. In fact, if any brave soul wants to open a nostalgia-themed 2003 Fridays revival, The Riff Report is IN.
Weโll even design the menu:
โWhiskey-Glazed Chaos Chickenโ โMySpace Burger with Bacon Bitsโ โLoaded Emo Friesโ โTriple Stack Pop-Punk Sundaeโ
Letโs bring it back โ for the laughs, for the memories, and for the loaded potato skins.
Cโmon butt, whoโs with us? ๐
