Because Springfield has more rock legends than Glastonbury and a worse bar tab than Download! ๐บ๐
For more than three decades, The Simpsons has given us everything from flying pigs to flaming mohawks โ and some of the greatest rock star cameos ever animated. ๐ค
From Metallica hitching a lift with Hans Moleman to Aerosmith setting fire to Moeโs Tavern, this list dives into ten times rock royalty stormed Springfield.
So grab a Duff, turn your amps to 11, and letโs count down the Top 10 Rock Star Cameos on The Simpsons! ๐กโก
๐ฅ 1. Metallica โ โThe Mook, the Chef, the Wife, and Her Homerโ (Season 18)
โMETALLICA RULES!โ
Bart loses Ottoโs bus while trying to help the metal gods chase down their tour ride. The band end up riding off with Hans Moleman โ possibly their weirdest roadie yet.
James Hetfieldโs snarl, Larsโ sass, and Kirkโs chill attitude made this one a banger. They even joke about โriding the lightningโฆ in style.โ ๐ค
๐ค Best bit: Otto screaming โMETALLICA RULES!โ as everyone boos him.
Thatโs the kind of loyalty you canโt teach in music school, mun.
๐ฅ 2. Aerosmith โ โFlaming Moeโsโ (Season 3)
Springfieldโs first rock guest stars โ and still one of the best.
When Moe steals Homerโs cocktail recipe, his bar becomes the hotspot. Cue Aerosmith playing โWalk This Wayโ while Moe hands Steven Tyler pickled eggs.
Itโs sleazy, loud, and totally 90s โ exactly how we like it.
๐ค Best bit: Moe: โThanks for coming, Mr. Tyler.โ
Steven: โPlease, call me Mr. Tyler.โ
Proper job. ๐
๐ฅ 3. The Rolling Stones โ โHow I Spent My Strummer Vacationโ (Season 14)
Rock โnโ roll bootcamp, Springfield-style! ๐ค
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards run a โRock Campโ to teach has-beens (and Homer) how to live the dream. Theyโre joined by Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, and Lenny Kravitz for extra chaos.
Naturally, Homer goes full diva and ruins everything.
๐ค Best bit: Homer tattooing โLenny Rulesโ across his belly.
(Itโs not that Lenny, by the way. Classic Homer.)
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers โ โKrusty Gets Kancelledโ (Season 4)
Before Flea had shirts and before Krusty had morals. ๐ฉณ
The Chilis guest on Krustyโs comeback show and get told to clean up their lyrics. They politely refuse and rock out anyway โ because this is Springfield, not Sesame Street.
๐ค Best bit: Anthony Kiedis asking, โWhat I got, I gotta get and put it in who now?โ
Network censors wept.
5. The Who โ โA Tale of Two Springfieldsโ (Season 12)
Area codes divide Springfield, but The Who unite it โ by literally blowing a hole through the wall with their amps. ๐
Pete Townshend didnโt voice himself (his brother Paul filled in), but Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle showed up ready to wreck the place.
๐ค Best bit: Daltreyโs scream knocking bricks loose.
No auto-tune, just raw British volume.
6. Smashing Pumpkins โ โHomerpaloozaโ (Season 7)
When Homer joins the travelling freak show at Hullabalooza (a parody of Lollapalooza), he meets Billy Corgan and co โ the kings of 90s gloom.
Theyโre deadpan, detached, and somehow totally in sync with Homerโs existential meltdown.
๐ค Best bit:
Homer: โThanks, Billy.โ
Billy: โWe envy you, Homer.โ
Thatโs Generation X summed up in one exchange. ๐
7. Green Day โ The Simpsons Movie (2007)
โGreen Day has been playing for three and a half hours!โ
In the filmโs opening, the band performs the Simpsons theme on a barge that promptly dissolves in toxic waste. Only they could go down shredding.
๐ค Best bit: Billie Joe declaring, โItโs been an honour playing with you, gentlemen!โ
Titanic, but with punk eyeliner and sludge. ๐
8. U2 โ โTrash of the Titansโ (Season 9)
Homer vs. Bono: The campaign nobody asked for. ๐
Homer hijacks a U2 gig to promote himself for Sanitation Commissioner, and chaos unfolds. Bono takes a bin to the face, The Edge doesnโt blink, and Larry Mullen Jr. just vibes.
๐ค Best bit: Bono saying, โHeโs got a point though!โ while security tackles Homer.
You canโt out-speech a politician-singer hybrid.
9. The White Stripes โ โJazzy and the Pussycatsโ (Season 18)
Bart discovers his drumming talent, and suddenly weโre in a โSeven Nation Armyโ video chase across Springfield. ๐ฅ
Jack and Meg cameo with perfect deadpan energy, making this one of the coolest modern guest spots.
๐ค Best bit: Jack: โBart! Youโre destroying our equipment!โ
Bart: โYouโre destroying my soul!โ
Honestly, feels like a real therapy session.
10. R.E.M. โ โHomer the Moeโ (Season 13)
Moe tries to turn his dive bar into a hipster lounge and books R.E.M. for a chill acoustic set. Naturally, Homer ruins it by stealing their beer. ๐บ
Michael Stipe plays it straight and sweet, proving R.E.M. can make any room feel like an NPR session.
๐ค Best bit: Stipeโs defeated sigh: โYouโre breaking my heart, Homer.โ
Poor bloke.
๐ค Honourable Mentions
- Spinal Tap โ โThe Otto Showโ (Season 3): Nigelโs amp goes to 11, Ottoโs bus goes to hell.
- The Ramones โ โRosebudโ (Season 5): โGo to hell, you old bastard!โ โ Happy Birthday, Mr. Burns. ๐
- Paul McCartney โ โLisa the Vegetarianโ (Season 7): Gave us lentils and life lessons. ๐ฑ
- Coldplay โ โMillion Dollar Maybeโ (Season 21): Homer buys them for Bartโs birthday.
- Elvis Costello โ โHow I Spent My Strummer Vacationโ: The shade king of Springfield.
๐ Final Thoughts
Whether theyโre smashing walls, sinking barges or sipping Duff with Moe, The Simpsons has always been rock โnโ roll at heart. ๐ฅ
Itโs messy, loud, and utterly timeless โ like your uncle at karaoke after two pints of Stella.
From punk to prog, Springfieldโs had them all โ and honestly, weโd still kill to see Ozzy Osbourne chase Bart through Moeโs with a bat. ๐ฆ
Only in Wales, munโฆ only in Springfield. ๐ป๐
