There are rock songs…

And then there are ROCK SONGS.

The kind of tracks that don’t just become hits — they become part of music history itself. Songs that live forever in sweaty clubs, festival fields, battered old headphones, late-night drives, and every single bloke who’s ever attempted air drums after two pints too many. 🍻🥁

And towering above most of them sits the almighty Tom Sawyer by Canadian prog legends Rush.

A song so iconic it practically has its own gravitational pull.

A riff so recognisable it could wake people from a coma.

A drum performance so outrageous that it’s probably responsible for several generations of drummers developing wrist pain before the age of 30. 😂

But here’s the genuinely unbelievable part, butt…

According to Geddy Lee, the song almost didn’t make it onto the album at all.

Yep.

One of the greatest rock songs ever written nearly got tossed aside during the making of Moving Pictures in 1981.

That’s like Black Sabbath deciding “Paranoid” was a bit too catchy.
Or Metallica deciding “Master of Puppets” needed less riff.
Or someone in Wales saying they don’t fancy chips after the pub.

Absolutely unthinkable behaviour. 😭🔥

⚡ Rush Were Never A “Normal” Rock Band

To understand why Geddy Lee had doubts about Tom Sawyer, you’ve got to remember where Rush were at as a band in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

These weren’t your standard rock radio lads.

Rush had spent years building a reputation as one of the most ambitious and technically fearless bands on the planet.

While other bands were writing simple radio anthems, Rush were out here creating:

  • 20-minute prog epics 🛸
  • Sci-fi concept songs 👽
  • Instrumental passages complicated enough to frighten maths professors 📐
  • Lyrics about philosophy, freedom, dystopia, and the human condition 📖
  • Time signatures that felt like puzzles designed by aliens 🤯

And somehow… they still rocked harder than most bands around them.

That was the magic of Rush.

They could be ridiculously clever without losing the power.

They were musicians’ musicians — but they were never boring.

And that’s a difficult line to walk, mun.

🎹 Then Came “Tom Sawyer”

When the band started developing material for Moving Pictures, something started to shift.

The songwriting became tighter.
The hooks became sharper.
The production became more streamlined.
The synthesizers became more prominent.

And out of that evolution came Tom Sawyer.

The track was inspired partly by lyrics from writer Pye Dubois, who had written a poem describing a modern-day rebel spirit — a free-thinking individual navigating a world full of conformity.

Neil Peart then expanded those ideas into the lyrics fans know today.

What emerged was something rare:
A progressive rock song with genuine mainstream appeal.

And that’s exactly what worried Geddy.

🤔 “Was This Too Commercial?”

At the time, Geddy Lee reportedly feared the song sounded too accessible compared to some of Rush’s more complex material.

Now, to normal human beings, “Tom Sawyer” still sounds gloriously bonkers.

But by Rush standards?

It was practically a pop single. 😂

The song had:

  • A direct structure
  • A memorable chorus
  • Huge hooks
  • Cleaner arrangements
  • A driving groove instead of sprawling prog wanderings

And Geddy worried that hardcore fans might see it as Rush softening their sound.

Which honestly shows how wildly different Rush were compared to everyone else.

Most bands DREAM of writing a song this catchy.

Rush were worried it might be TOO catchy. 🤣

Prog rock problems, mun.

🥁 Neil Peart Was Operating On Another Planet

Of course, one of the reasons Tom Sawyer became immortal was because of the absolute wizardry of Neil Peart.

There are great drummers.

There are legendary drummers.

And then there’s Neil Peart — a man who approached drumming like he was solving advanced engineering equations while simultaneously fighting a dragon. 🐉🥁

His performance on “Tom Sawyer” is still considered one of the greatest drum tracks ever recorded.

That groove.
Those fills.
THAT solo section.

Honestly, listening to Neil Peart drum sometimes feels less like hearing a musician and more like witnessing controlled chaos from another dimension.

And yet somehow it still grooves.

That’s the frightening part.

🎸 Alex Lifeson’s Guitar Work Is Criminally Underrated

While everyone understandably loses their minds over Peart’s drumming and Geddy’s bass playing, guitarist Alex Lifeson deserves massive credit for helping turn “Tom Sawyer” into a monster.

That opening riff is pure arena-rock perfection.

It’s heavy without being overly complicated.
Melodic without losing aggression.
Technical without becoming self-indulgent.

Basically: exactly what great rock guitar should be. 🔥

Lifeson always had this ability to make complicated music FEEL effortless.

And that’s harder than shredding a million notes a second.

📻 The Song That Opened Rush To The World

When Tom Sawyer was finally released in 1981, it exploded.

Radio stations loved it.
Rock fans worshipped it.
Musicians became obsessed with it.

Suddenly Rush weren’t just a cult prog band anymore.

They were becoming giants.

And for countless fans, “Tom Sawyer” became the gateway drug into progressive rock itself.

You’d hear the song once and think:
“Hang on… what IS this?”

Then before you knew it you were knee-deep in the Rush catalogue arguing about time signatures online at 2am. 😂

🌍 Why The Song Still Matters In 2026

What’s incredible about Tom Sawyer is how timeless it still feels.

Over 40 years later:

  • The riff still sounds huge
  • The synths still feel futuristic
  • The lyrics still feel intelligent
  • The musicianship still feels untouchable
  • The energy still hits like a freight train

And unlike many “classic rock staples,” the song hasn’t become stale.

If anything, younger generations keep rediscovering it and reacting the exact same way:
“HOW did humans make this?” 🤯

That’s the mark of a truly legendary song.

🍁 Rush Never Chased Trends — And That’s Why They Won

One of the reasons Rush remain so respected is because they never tried to follow trends.

They evolved naturally.

They experimented constantly.

But they always sounded like Rush.

Even when incorporating synthesizers and more accessible songwriting, they never lost their identity.

That’s why “Tom Sawyer” worked.

It wasn’t Rush selling out.

It was Rush refining their brilliance into something sharper and more immediate.

And honestly?
That balance is ridiculously hard to achieve.

🎤 The Live Performances Became Legendary

If you’ve ever watched live footage of Rush performing Tom Sawyer, you already know the atmosphere was unreal.

The crowd reaction alone could probably register on weather satellites. 🌩️

The moment that intro kicked in:

  • Entire arenas erupted
  • Air drumming levels reached dangerous heights
  • Bass players forgot how gravity worked
  • Prog fans collectively transcended reality

And somehow the band STILL played it flawlessly night after night.

Which honestly feels unfair to the rest of humanity.

🤯 Imagine If They’d Left It Off The Album…

Seriously.

Imagine a world where Geddy’s doubts had won.

No “Tom Sawyer.”
No iconic intro.
No legendary live performances.
No generations of musicians inspired by it.
No rock clubs blasting it at ridiculous volume.
No YouTube drummers sweating through impossible covers.

Rock history would genuinely look different.

That’s the scary part.

Sometimes the songs artists doubt the most end up becoming the songs that define them forever.

🤘 The Riff Report Verdict

The idea that Geddy Lee once questioned whether Tom Sawyer belonged on Moving Pictures feels absolutely mental now.

But maybe that’s part of why Rush were so brilliant.

They challenged themselves constantly.
They questioned everything.
They refused to become complacent.

And in doing so, they accidentally created one of the greatest rock songs ever written. 🔥

So tonight, crack open a cold one, annoy the neighbours, blast “Tom Sawyer” far too loudly, and spare a thought for the terrifying alternate universe where this masterpiece never existed.

Frankly, we don’t want to live in that timeline, butt. 🤘🍻

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
