Grunge, Britpop, Alt-Rock & Madness: A Decade of Glory, Grit and Gallagher Gobbiness

The ’90s were an absolute riot. A glorious mess of angst, oversized jeans, plaid shirts, and bands that changed the face of music forever. It wasnโ€™t just about Nirvana or Blur vs Oasis โ€“ it was about vibes, venom, and volume. The decade birthed some of the best riffs, frontmen with issues, and albums that still slap harder than a steel-toe boot in the pit.

So, in classic Riff Report fashion โ€“ hereโ€™s our loud, proud, and slightly daft ranking ofโ€ฆ

๐Ÿค˜ THE 18 GREATEST ROCK BANDS OF THE 1990s ๐Ÿค˜

(Warning: Contains high levels of nostalgia, opinions, and basslines.)

๐ŸŽค 18. Counting Crows

Before emo got its MySpace fringe, Counting Crows gave us August and Everything After โ€“ a heartbreak album for sad lads with acoustic guitars. Mr. Jones still hits different when you’re drunk on a Wednesday.

๐ŸŽง Riff to play: โ€œRound Hereโ€ โ€“ aka the sound of an existential crisis in slow motion.

๐ŸŽธ 17. Live

The band with the most intense staring contests in MTV history. Throwing Copper was practically a religion in 1994. Ed Kowalczyk made screaming about placenta oddly poetic.

๐Ÿง  โ€œLightning crashes, a new mother criesโ€ฆโ€ and we all wept into our Doc Martens.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ 16. Smashing Pumpkins

Billy Corgan: bald prophet of poetic doom. Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie are masterpieces of grunge meets prog meets glittery weirdness.

๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ That guitar tone? Fuzzy enough to make your fillings rattle.
๐Ÿฅ‡ Honourary medal for most painfully gorgeous track: Tonight, Tonight

๐Ÿ›ธ 15. Weezer

Blue Album? Pop-rock perfection. Pinkerton? Sad-boy genius. Rivers Cuomo became the awkward king of nerd rock and still wears those glasses like a champ.

๐Ÿ’™ Best line: โ€œI look just like Buddy Hollyโ€ฆโ€
โ— Worst idea: Everything post-2010.

๐ŸŽฉ 14. Blur

They made cockney poetry sexy. Damon Albarnโ€™s smirk alone could power a small indie venue. Parklife was snarky, witty, and 100% iconique.

๐Ÿ• Best dog-related Britpop moment: “He gets intimidated by the dirty pigeons.”

๐Ÿงจ 13. Soundgarden

Heavy as hell, weird as sin, and fronted by the GOAT vocal cords of Chris Cornell. They brought prog to grunge and made it sound cool.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Superunknown is still a masterclass in loud introspection.
๐Ÿ–ค Fell on Black Days = peak moody brilliance.

๐Ÿงผ 12. Alice in Chains

Doom-laced harmonies. Acoustic ballads that slap harder than metalcore breakdowns. Layne Staley was that guy.

๐Ÿชฆ โ€œDown in a Holeโ€ still leaves us emotionally wrecked.
๐Ÿ’€ Sabbath would be proud.

โšก 11. Manic Street Preachers

From tragic beginnings to stadium-conquering anthems, the Manics never did subtle. Richey Edwards was a lyrical genius/madman, and the band carried on with everything to prove.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Best political chorus: โ€œIf you tolerate this, then your children will be next.โ€
๐Ÿด Proper job, lads.

๐Ÿ–ค 10. Placebo

Sleazy, stylish, and soaked in androgynous drama. Brian Molko gave us eyeliner rock for the goth kids who couldnโ€™t afford Marilyn Manson merch.

๐ŸŒ˜ Without You Iโ€™m Nothing was basically a permission slip for being gloriously miserable.
๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ Lyric game? Top tier.

๐Ÿงจ 9. Pearl Jam

The grunge dads. While others burned out, they battled Ticketmaster and still tour like maniacs. Ten remains untouchable. Eddie Vedder is basically Gandalf in flannel.

๐Ÿ“€ Best vocal mumble: โ€œYeeeeeeaahh uh huh uh huhhhh ahhhh yeaaah.โ€
๐Ÿ Long live The Ved.

๐ŸŽก 8. Blur vs Oasis (TIE)

Yep, we’re doing it. The Battle of Britpop was a draw. Blur had the brains (The Universal), Oasis had the bangers (Cigarettes & Alcohol). You canโ€™t have one without the other.

๐ŸฅŠ Chart fight: Blurโ€™s Country House beat Roll With It but Oasis won the war.
๐Ÿง  Thinkers vs Drinkers. You decide.

๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ 7. Green Day

Pop-punk before it got Disneyfied. Dookie was a snotty, snarling masterpiece. Billie Joe Armstrong taught us it was OK to be weird, loud, and politically angry.

๐Ÿ’ฉ Song that changed lives: Basket Case
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ They may have American Idiot, but Insomniac is the dark horse classic.

๐ŸŒฟ 6. Radiohead

The thinking manโ€™s rock band. Went from The Bends to OK Computer and broke our collective minds in the process. Thom Yorke is anxietyโ€™s indie poster boy.

๐Ÿค– Paranoid Android is like prog-rock for depressed robots.
๐Ÿง  Big brain energy. Very few bangers. All vibes.

๐Ÿ 5. Red Hot Chili Peppers

Sex, funk, and madness. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a sweaty fever dream. Flea plays like a man possessed and Kiedis makes nonsense sound profound.

๐Ÿซก Most confusing lyric: โ€œWith the birds Iโ€™ll share this lonely view.โ€
๐Ÿฉณ Still not over the sock-on-cock era.

๐Ÿฅ€ 4. Stone Temple Pilots

Grunge glam with killer grooves. Scott Weiland had range, style, and a touch of chaos. They never quite got the respect they deserved โ€“ but weโ€™re here to fix that.

๐Ÿ’ฟ Purple is chefโ€™s kiss.
๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ Interstate Love Song lives rent-free in our heads.

โš ๏ธ 3. Nirvana

Obvious? Maybe. Overrated? Never. Nevermind blew the doors off the ’80s, and In Utero was the band at their raw, blistering best.

๐Ÿ’” Cobain didnโ€™t want to be the voice of a generation, but he was.
๐Ÿงจ Smells Like Teen Spirit hit like a grenade through MTV.

๐Ÿพ 2. Oasis

They swaggered, brawled, and belted out bangers. Liam was the frontman we didnโ€™t deserve, Noel was the genius we didnโ€™t appreciate enough. Together, they were rockโ€™s last true gang.

๐ŸŽค โ€œIs it my imagination, or have I finally found something worth living for?โ€ โ€“ YES LIAM.
๐Ÿงจ Every karaoke night should end with Donโ€™t Look Back in Anger.

๐Ÿฅ‡ 1. Foo Fighters

From Nirvanaโ€™s ashes came the ultimate stadium rock machine. Dave Grohl is a riff-slinging legend, and The Colour and the Shape might be the best rock album of the decade.

โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ Everlong is eternal.
๐Ÿ† Rockโ€™s most lovable frontman? Cโ€™mon, butt. Itโ€™s Grohl.

๐ŸŽง Honourable Mentions:

  • Silverchair โ€“ Aussie grunge done properly.
  • The Verve โ€“ For Bittersweet Symphony alone.
  • Bush โ€“ Gavin Rossdale was the UKโ€™s grunge poster boy.
  • No Doubt โ€“ Ska, punk, and Gwen Stefani slayage.

๐Ÿง  Final Thought:

The ’90s werenโ€™t just a golden era for rock โ€“ they were the era. Whether you were sobbing to Radiohead, moshing to Nirvana, or just trying to Live Forever in a bucket hat, these bands gave us the soundtrack to our coming-of-age chaos.

Got a band we missed? Think Creed deserved to be top 5? (You mad, but alright.) Hit us up on socials and tell us your Top 90s Rock Ranking!
