Some rock stars fade quietly into retirement.
Some disappear into the countryside with a cup of tea and a gardening obsession. 🌱

And then there’s Dave Hill.

The legendary Slade guitarist has decided that the age of 80 is the PERFECT time to release his very first solo album.

Because of course he has. 🤘😈

The album, titled Dirty Foot Lane, is due for release in October 2026 and already sounds like one of the most personal and fascinating records to emerge from the classic rock world in years.

Even better?
The album is being produced by Django Holder — son of Slade icon Noddy Holder.

That’s right.
The next generation of the Holder family helping a glam rock legend tell his story. Proper full-circle rock ’n’ roll magic, butt. 🔥

⚡ FROM GLITTER, PLATFORM BOOTS & CHAOS… TO A DEEPLY PERSONAL SOLO RECORD

For decades, Dave Hill has been one of the most recognisable figures in British rock history.

Even if you somehow didn’t know the music, you knew Dave.

The giant hats.
The mirrored guitars.
The outrageous stage outfits.
The grin that looked like he was permanently plotting chaos in the best possible way. 😈

Slade weren’t just another 70s band.
They were a cultural event.

Their music exploded out of pubs, clubs, football grounds, house parties, dodgy discos, battered jukeboxes and festival fields for generations.

And somehow… it still does.

You can’t walk into a British pub in December without hearing Merry Xmas Everybody at least seventeen times before your chips arrive. 🍺🎄

But beyond the Christmas anthem status lies one of the most influential British rock bands ever to stomp across a stage.

🎶 THE SOUNDTRACK TO WORKING-CLASS BRITAIN

Slade captured something real.

They weren’t polished rock aristocracy.
They felt loud, scruffy, funny, relatable, chaotic and gloriously British.

And people adored them for it.

Songs like:

  • 🎤 Cum On Feel The Noize
  • 🎸 Mama Weer All Crazee Now
  • ⚡ Gudbuy T’Jane
  • 🌍 Far Far Away
  • 🍻 Take Me Bak ‘Ome

…became absolute anthems.

Massive choruses.
Huge hooks.
Pub-singalong perfection.

The kind of songs that make strangers hug each other at festivals after three pints of warm lager and a questionable hot dog. 🌭

And at the centre of all that glam-fuelled madness stood Dave Hill.

His guitar playing and larger-than-life visual style helped define the band’s identity.

Without Dave Hill, Slade simply wouldn’t have looked — or sounded — like Slade.

🧠 DIRTY FOOT LANE SOUNDS FAR MORE EMOTIONAL THAN PEOPLE EXPECTED

That’s why this new album feels genuinely intriguing.

Instead of simply recreating the old glam stompers, Dirty Foot Lane reportedly dives into deeply personal territory.

The album explores:

  • Childhood memories
  • Family life
  • Ambition
  • Mental health
  • Fame
  • Survival
  • Resilience
  • Life on the road

Musically, Dave is apparently blending:

  • 🎸 Classic rock
  • 🎹 Blues
  • 🌙 Atmospheric textures
  • 🍂 Folk influences
  • 🎼 Experimental soundscapes

And honestly? That sounds brilliant.

Because when artists with decades of life experience open up creatively, you often get the most meaningful music of their careers.

There’s a weight behind it.
A truth to it.

The stories aren’t invented anymore.
They’re lived.

🎤 DJANGO HOLDER PRODUCING IS A BEAUTIFUL TOUCH

One of the coolest things about this whole project is the involvement of Django Holder.

For longtime Slade fans, it adds an emotional layer to the album before anyone’s even heard a single note.

Noddy Holder and Dave Hill helped build one of the most beloved rock bands Britain has ever produced.

Now Noddy’s son is helping Dave craft a deeply personal solo album decades later.

That’s genuinely lovely stuff.

And let’s be honest — growing up around the chaos, humour, music, and madness of the Slade universe probably gives Django a pretty unique understanding of Dave as both a musician and a person.

You imagine there must’ve been some incredible conversations in the studio.

Stories from the road.
Stories from Wolverhampton.
Stories from the peak of glam rock insanity. 🎸🔥

Probably a few stories that legally can’t be repeated too.

🎸 JOHN BERRY’S ROLE IN THE RECORD

Another major contributor to Dirty Foot Lane is John Berry, bassist in Dave Hill’s Slade lineup.

Dave spoke warmly about Berry’s contribution, saying:

“I’ve known John for over twenty years. He’s incredibly talented, honest, and always gives you his very best. That’s invaluable.”

That says a lot.

When musicians trust each other creatively for that long, it shows in the music.

Especially on an album that appears to be this reflective and personal.

This doesn’t sound like a quick vanity project thrown together for nostalgia sales.

It sounds like Dave genuinely had something he wanted to say.

🤘 WHY THIS RECORD MATTERS

There’s actually something really important about artists like Dave Hill continuing to create.

Modern music culture can sometimes feel obsessed with youth, algorithms, viral trends and whatever lasts five seconds on TikTok before disappearing forever into the digital void.

Meanwhile, artists with decades of wisdom and experience often have the richest stories to tell.

Dave Hill has lived through:

  • The explosion of glam rock
  • The madness of 70s touring
  • Arena-sized fame
  • Industry changes
  • Personal highs and lows
  • The evolution of rock music itself

That perspective matters.

And albums like Dirty Foot Lane remind people that creativity doesn’t come with an expiry date.

Rock ’n’ roll isn’t about age.

It’s about spirit. 🔥

🍺 THE RIFF REPORT’S TAKE

Honestly?
We absolutely love this.

At 80 years old, Dave Hill is still pushing himself creatively instead of simply replaying the past.

That’s proper inspiring stuff.

It would’ve been easy to stick to nostalgia tours and greatest hits forever.

Instead, he’s chosen vulnerability.
Experimentation.
Storytelling.
Growth.

That’s what real artists do.

And knowing Dave Hill, there’ll probably still be a few massive riffs, loud guitars and gloriously over-the-top moments hidden in there too. 😈

Because no matter how reflective things get… you can’t fully remove the glam chaos from Slade DNA.

Nor should you.

🎶 OCTOBER CAN’T COME QUICK ENOUGH

Dirty Foot Lane arrives in October 2026, and we’ll absolutely be keeping a close eye on any singles, videos, previews, and tour announcements that emerge over the coming months.

One thing’s for certain though…

Dave Hill is proving that rock legends never truly stop creating.

And honestly?
The world’s a much louder, sillier and better place because of it. 🤘🔥🍻

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
