There are normal tour stories…

Then there are Anthrax tour stories. 😭🍺

This week, metal fans everywhere collectively spat their tea across the room after Scott Ian casually revealed that he used to play online poker during live Anthrax shows.

Not joking.

Not exaggerating.

Actual online poker games.

During actual Anthrax gigs.

Somewhere in the world there are fans who paid good money to witness one of thrash metal’s greatest bands while Scott Ian was potentially sitting side-stage wondering whether to go all-in with pocket aces. 😭🎰

And honestly? This might be the most gloriously unhinged thing we’ve heard all year.

🃏 The Internet Poker Boom Was A DIFFERENT Time

To understand how we got here, you’ve got to remember just how massive online poker became during the 2000s.

For a while, the world completely lost its collective mind over Texas Hold ’Em. Suddenly everyone thought they were one lucky tournament away from becoming the next Vegas superstar. Blokes who previously couldn’t organise a Tesco meal deal were suddenly talking about “reading tells” and “pot odds” like hardened casino veterans. 😂

Poker websites exploded overnight.

Late-night TV became filled with poker tournaments.

Every pub had at least one lad wearing sunglasses indoors pretending he was in the World Series of Poker.

And apparently, somewhere in the middle of all this madness, Scott Ian became fully hooked too. 😅

The idea of one of metal’s most iconic rhythm guitarists sitting backstage at festivals balancing riffs with poker hands is almost too funny for the human brain to process.

Imagine it for a second…

The crowd are losing their minds to Caught In A Mosh…

Beer’s flying through the air…

Security are dragging crowd surfers over barriers…

And Scott Ian’s thinking:

“If this idiot calls my bluff, I’m cooked.”

Absolute scenes, butt. 🤘🔥

🎸 Anthrax Have ALWAYS Been Thrash Metal’s Funniest Band

What makes this story even better is that it feels perfectly on-brand for Anthrax.

Out of the legendary “Big Four” thrash bands, Anthrax always stood apart because they embraced humour, chaos, comic books, skate culture, and pure silliness alongside the aggression. While other bands projected mystery and darkness, Anthrax felt like the lads who’d accidentally start a wall of death in a bowling alley. 😭🍺

That’s exactly why fans connected with them.

They weren’t pretending to be untouchable rock gods.

They felt like genuine music nerds who loved riffs, loved touring, and loved causing absolute carnage.

From their collaborations with Public Enemy to Scott Ian’s legendary facial hair becoming more recognisable than some entire bands, Anthrax built a reputation on personality as much as music.

And now we can officially add:

“Professional thrash guitarist / part-time online poker goblin”

to Scott Ian’s résumé. 😂

🥁 The Timing Feels Especially Strange

The confession also lands during a major transitional moment for Anthrax, as the band begin their latest tour without longtime drummer Charlie Benante.

For many fans, Charlie is Anthrax.

The man’s drumming helped define the band’s entire sound for decades, blending speed, groove, hardcore aggression, and insane technical precision into one unmistakable style. 🥁🔥

From the classic era of Among The Living through to modern Anthrax records, Benante’s fingerprints are all over the band’s legacy.

So seeing Anthrax touring without him naturally feels unusual.

Fans have been discussing everything from lineup stability to future recording plans as the band continue moving forward with fill-in drummers covering the current shows.

And while Anthrax remain absolute professionals on stage, there’s no denying Charlie’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in the band’s chemistry.

Especially when you realise he was probably the one member NOT secretly gambling online during the set. 😭

🍺 Tour Life Is Apparently Even Stranger Than We Thought

People often imagine touring life as endless glamour, backstage parties, and rock star excess.

In reality?

Touring can actually be incredibly repetitive between the adrenaline rushes.

Hours of travel.

Long soundchecks.

Waiting around arenas.

Hotel rooms that all start looking identical after three weeks.

Questionable motorway service station sandwiches.

And enough energy drinks to legally classify your bloodstream as radioactive. ⚡😂

So when musicians develop weird hobbies on the road, it honestly makes sense.

Some bands game constantly.

Others binge-watch entire TV box sets.

Some become gym addicts.

And apparently Scott Ian became the metal world’s answer to an online casino regular.

There’s something deeply funny about imagining the backstage atmosphere.

You can practically hear it:

“Scott, you’re on in thirty seconds.”

“Hang on, I’m in a tournament.”

😭😭😭

🎤 Anthrax Still Remain One Of Metal’s Most Important Bands

Behind all the jokes though, it’s worth remembering just how important Anthrax remain to heavy music history.

Together with Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth, Anthrax helped define thrash metal itself.

Their music blended hardcore punk energy with razor-sharp metal riffing, helping shape generations of bands that followed.

Without Anthrax, modern metal simply sounds different.

Tracks like:

  • Madhouse
  • Indians
  • Antisocial
  • Caught In A Mosh
  • Among The Living

…remain absolute pit-destroying weapons to this day. 🤘🔥

And unlike many legacy bands, Anthrax still play with genuine fire live. No autopilot. No going through the motions. Just pure energy and chaos every time they hit the stage.

Which somehow makes the poker confession even more ridiculous.

Because fans weren’t watching a half-hearted performance.

They were watching Anthrax deliver full-throttle thrash destruction while Scott Ian was potentially calculating betting percentages between riffs. 😭

🎰 Fans Are Absolutely Loving The Story

Metal fans online have reacted exactly how you’d expect:

  • disbelief
  • admiration
  • uncontrollable laughter
  • several jokes about Scott bluffing harder in poker than on stage banter

Some fans admitted it weirdly makes them love Anthrax even more.

And honestly, same.

Rock history is filled with overly serious mythology sometimes. It’s refreshing when legendary musicians openly admit to being chaotic weirdos with random hobbies like the rest of us.

That humanity is part of why Anthrax have endured for so long.

They never lost the sense of fun.

They never became robotic.

They still feel like the kind of band you could accidentally end up drinking with at 2am in a sticky festival bar while somebody argues over whether Slayer riffs improve poker concentration. 🍺😈

🤘 Final Thoughts From The Riff Report

At this point, Anthrax stories deserve their own Netflix comedy series.

Because only this band could combine:

  • world-class thrash metal
  • backstage chaos
  • online poker addiction
  • lineup drama
  • circle pits
  • comic books
  • ridiculous humour
  • and total musical excellence

…into one beautiful mess.

And somewhere out there, hidden deep in the internet archives, is probably a random poker player who unknowingly lost money to Scott Ian while Among The Living shook an arena to its foundations nearby.

Absolutely incredible.

Thrash metal remains undefeated, mun. 🎰🔥🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
