“The faster you hit, the harder it hurts.” That could’ve been Joey Jordison’s personal mantra. A drumming phenom. A masked legend. A one-man wrecking crew behind the kit who reshaped what heavy metal drumming could be. And today, we raise the horns and a tear-stained pint to him 🥹🍺.
On July 26, 2021, the world of metal went quiet for a brief moment — something that never happens. Joey Jordison, the founding drummer of Slipknot, passed away at just 46. And yet, in his time on Earth, he made more noise than most could in ten lifetimes.
🎭 The Masked Magician
If you were lucky enough to see Slipknot in their early carnage-fueled years, you already know — Joey wasn’t just a drummer. He was a f*ing machine. Flying roundhouse kicks mid-solo, spinning drum risers, blasting at 200bpm like it was a stroll in Bute Park. His painted face — especially that haunting tear-streaked mask — became iconic. Kids wanted to be him. Drummers feared him.
And that image, captured in the photo above, says it all: intense, theatrical, deeply metal. Joey didn’t just play drums — he became the heartbeat of chaos.
🥁 A Legacy Written in Blood and Blast Beats
Let’s not forget: Joey wrote a LOT of Slipknot’s early material. We’re talking the unrelenting violence of “(sic)”, the tribal insanity of “Eyeless”, the whiplash fury of “People = Shit” — he had his hands (and sticks) all over it.
And who could forget his work with Murderdolls, Scar the Martyr, Sinsaenum, or his brief but badass live fill-ins with Korn and Rob Zombie? Joey wasn’t a one-trick pony. He was a warhorse that galloped across every metal battlefield.
💔 The Sudden Silence
In 2016, Joey revealed he was living with transverse myelitis, a neurological disorder that robbed him of control over his legs. Imagine that — a drummer who couldn’t drum. A cruel twist of fate if there ever was one.
But even as his physical strength faded, his influence only grew stronger. The tributes after his death came pouring in — from Lars Ulrich to Dave Lombardo, Corey Taylor to Jay Weinberg — all hailing the legacy of a man who redefined drumming and left a crater-sized hole in the metal world.
🕯️ Forever Number #1
He wasn’t just #1 in the band lineup — he was #1 in the hearts of a generation of metalheads. Every kid who picked up sticks and tried to play “Disasterpiece” at full speed? That’s Joey’s legacy. Every drummer who realized you could mix precision with pure animal fury? That’s Joey’s footprint, stomped into the mud of every mosh pit worldwide.
And here at The Riff Report, we don’t just mourn Joey. We celebrate him — loudly, proudly, and with a whole lot of cymbal crashes and blast beats.
🖤 Diolch, Joey
From the top of the mountain to the darkest pit, your rhythm shook us all. Your fire lit up arenas, basements, headphones and souls.
Rest easy, legend. Keep the double-kick pedal warm for us in Valhalla. Until then…
