🖤 Breaking News – A Legend Has Fallen
On 20th March 2025, rock fans woke up to the gut-punch news that Marty Callner, the man behind some of the most iconic music videos of all time, has died at 78 years old.
If you grew up in the 1980s or 1990s, chances are Callner directed the visuals that defined your teenage bedroom wall posters, your first MTV binges, and your lifelong love for rock ’n’ roll. He didn’t just film bands — he mythologised them.
Think: Tawny Kitaen writhing across a car bonnet, Alicia Silverstone leaping off a bridge, Dee Snider screaming rebellion in a cartoon slapstick house of chaos. All Callner.
Without him, MTV might not have had the same firepower, and rock might not have felt so cinematic. Proper job, mun. 🏴
🎬 Marty Callner: The Man Behind the Lens
Born in 1946, Callner didn’t start out chasing glam rockers and hair metal gods. His early career was steeped in television direction, working on variety shows, comedy specials, and live concert broadcasts.
But when MTV launched in 1981, hungry for content and desperate for directors who could make three-minute promos feel like mini-Hollywood productions, Callner became the guy.
His trademarks?
- Big, bold visual storytelling.
- Cinematic pacing — every video felt like a movie trailer.
- A knack for making musicians look larger than life.
- And a cheeky streak of humour — perfect for Twisted Sister’s camp chaos.
🚗 Whitesnake – Tawny Kitaen, Jaguars & Rock Video Immortality
Let’s not mess about: when most people think of Marty Callner, they think of Whitesnake.
🎶 “Here I Go Again” (1987)
This wasn’t just a music video — it was a cultural earthquake. Tawny Kitaen, in all her fiery glory, doing cartwheels and writhing across David Coverdale’s white Jaguar became the image of MTV in the ’80s.
It was pure fantasy: love, lust, cars, and hair that could defy physics. Without Callner’s cinematic flair, Whitesnake might have stayed a solid rock band. With him, they became MTV megastars.
🎶 “Is This Love” (1987)
Here, Callner slowed things down — soft lighting, sensual close-ups, and a smouldering intimacy that turned a rock ballad into an MTV bedtime story.
🎶 “Still of the Night” (1987)
A moody gothic epic, drenched in neon lighting and thunderous riffs, proving Callner could go big drama as well as sexy.
Result? Whitesnake went from clubs to arenas, largely thanks to MTV airplay — and Callner’s visuals were the jet fuel.
😍 Aerosmith – The Alicia Silverstone Trilogy
If Whitesnake made Callner the ’80s rock video king, Aerosmith cemented him as the ’90s master of MTV cinema.
🎶 “Cryin’” (1993)
Alicia Silverstone stars as a rebellious teen ditching her loser boyfriend, getting a tattoo, bungee-jumping off a bridge, and flipping the bird at authority. Callner packed more plot into four minutes than some Hollywood rom-coms.
🎶 “Amazing” (1993)
Here, he went full sci-fi VR fantasy — Silverstone again, this time in a virtual reality romance with Edward Furlong (fresh from Terminator 2). The line between music video and blockbuster blurred completely.
🎶 “Crazy” (1994)
The crown jewel. Silverstone returns, this time with Liv Tyler (Steven Tyler’s daughter), as two wild teens skipping school, stripping in a gas station, and raising all kinds of MTV-friendly mischief.
These videos weren’t just promos — they were cultural events, endlessly discussed, replayed, and parodied.
Result? Aerosmith rebranded themselves from ’70s survivors into ’90s icons, introducing a whole new generation to the band.
🤘 Twisted Sister – The Cartoon Rebellion
If Whitesnake was about lust and Aerosmith was about cinema, Twisted Sister was pure comic book mayhem.
🎶 “We’re Not Gonna Take It” (1984)
Callner’s comedic instincts exploded here. The video is essentially a live-action Looney Tunes short: an angry dad screams, “What do you want to do with your life?!” and Dee Snider answers with a wall of sound and rebellion.
Furniture breaks, pratfalls fly, and rock ’n’ roll triumphs.
🎶 “I Wanna Rock” (1984)
A spiritual sequel, with even more slapstick chaos. Callner made Twisted Sister fun, turning them into MTV darlings despite their outrageous looks and makeup.
Result? These videos turned Twisted Sister from cult glam punks into household names.
🎤 Other Rock Giants Callner Worked With
Callner’s fingerprints are all over rock video history:
- Heart – “What About Love” (1985), “Never” (1985), “Alone” (1987)
- Poison – “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” (1988, live video)

- Ratt – “Round and Round” (1984, though directed by Don Letts, Callner influenced that style and worked with them later on)
- Skid Row, Cher, Kix, and more.
He had a magic touch for hair metal and arena rock — making every band look like gods of excess.
📺 Beyond Rock – HBO, Comedy & Pop
Callner wasn’t a one-trick pony. He also directed:
- HBO comedy specials for Robin Williams, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and more.
- Pop stars like Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, and Janet Jackson in later years.
- Concert films, documentaries, and live broadcasts.
Basically, if it was big, brash, and demanded a crowd, Callner knew how to film it.

🏴 From Wales With Love – The Riff Report Take
Let’s be real: Marty Callner didn’t just direct videos. He directed our imaginations. He’s the reason half of us nicked our dad’s camcorder to film fake band videos in the garage.
He gave us rebellion, romance, comedy, and sheer rock ’n’ roll swagger in four-minute packages. That’s tidy work, butt.
🍻 Final Thoughts – Raise a Pint to Marty Callner
Music videos today? Half of them are shot on iPhones with lo-fi vibes. But back in the ’80s and ’90s, Marty Callner was making blockbusters. He was MTV’s Spielberg, the man who understood that rock was theatre — and theatre needed a camera.
So tonight, stick on Here I Go Again, Crazy, and We’re Not Gonna Take It. Turn the volume up. Sing along. And remember the man who gave rock its Hollywood edge.
Rest in Power, Marty Callner (1946–2025).
Your films may have lasted four minutes, but your legacy is eternal. 🤘🔥
