It was going to be massive. We had rumours swirling, announcements on the horizon, and fans across Wales and beyond ready to return to our sacred hilltop home. But instead of amps crackling to lifeโฆ we got cancellations, lockdowns, and the soul-shattering phrase:
โDue to ongoing public health concernsโฆโ
And just like that โ the mountain went quiet. โซ
No lanyards.
No guitar solos echoing into the night.
No shouting โCโMON WALES!โ with 5,000 other mud-soaked maniacs.
Just masks, hand gel, and socially distanced sobbing into our Steelhouse hoodies.
๐ญ What We Missed
๐ถ The Riffs
Gone were the soaring solos, the sweaty pits, and the sound of beer cups flying as the chorus dropped. Our ears rang with nothing.
๐๏ธ The Campsite Carnage
No battling with tent poles in 40mph winds. No โwhereโs our camp?โ panics at 3am. No waking up to the sound of someone trying to cook bacon on a disposable BBQ using lighter fluid and rage.
๐ป The Bar Queue Bants
No awkward โis this the queue?โ moments. No clinking pints with strangers who instantly became your best mates. No shouting โYES MATE!โ every time someone walked past with a round stacked like a tower of ale.
๐ The Community
Most painful of all โ no reunion with the Steelhouse family. No flags waving on the hill. No grinning photographers capturing your drenched joy. No dragons roaring in the distance. Just… nothing.
๐ป We Made the Best of Itโฆ Sort Of
Did we sulk in our living rooms in muddy boots while streaming old headliner sets on YouTube?
Yes.
Did we pitch tents in our gardens and tell the neighbours to โshut up, itโs Massive Wagons timeโ?
Also yes.
Did someone absolutely create a โvirtual Steelhouseโ Zoom party with air guitars and cider?
Damn right they did.
We made do โ but it wasnโt the same. The soul of Steelhouse isnโt just the music. Itโs the mountain. The people. The shared chaos.
๐ Final Thoughts โ A Year on Pause, A Heart Still Beating
Steelhouse 2020 never happened โ but it was never forgotten.
It was a ghost year, a heavy silence, a skipped beat in the rhythm of our rock โnโ roll hearts.
But that silence made the comeback all the sweeter.
When the amps came back in 2021, they were LOUDER.
When the gates reopened, they were WIDER.
When the community returned โ we were STRONGER.
So hereโs to the year that didnโt happen.
To the air-gigs we played in our kitchens.
To the ticket emails we clung to like sacred scrolls.
To the dream of standing on that mountain once more.
Steelhouse 2020 โ the festival that never happened, but meant everything.
Cymru am byth. See you at the top. ๐๏ธ๐ค
