1. Rob Halford – “Painkiller” (Judas Priest)
⚡ Album: Painkiller (1990)
💀 Vibe: Angel screaming while riding a flaming motorcycle through hell
Rob. Freakin’. Halford. The Metal God. And this is the track where he proves it beyond question. From the opening banshee wail to the operatic high notes that could slice steel, “Painkiller” is vocal warfare. You hear this and think, “Yup, I just got dropkicked by a leather-clad soprano.”
Standout moment: That scream at 0:09? Goosebumps every time. Diolch, Rob. 🙏
2. Ronnie James Dio – “Heaven and Hell” (Black Sabbath)
⚡ Album: Heaven and Hell (1980)
💀 Vibe: A wizard narrating your doom with golden pipes
Ronnie didn’t just replace Ozzy — he reimagined Sabbath. “Heaven and Hell” is a masterclass in drama, dynamics, and divine fury. Every word drips with power, mystery, and leather. This was Dio entering his prime and never looking back.
Standout moment: The way he growls “The world is full of kings and queens…” — spine-chilling!
3. Bruce Dickinson – “Hallowed Be Thy Name” (Iron Maiden)
⚡ Album: The Number of the Beast (1982)
💀 Vibe: Shakespeare with a battleaxe and a jetpack
This is Iron Maiden’s magnum opus, and Bruce Dickinson delivers a vocal journey like no other. From the whispered intro to the soaring crescendo, it’s the sound of a condemned man and a galloping warlord. Only Bruce could make you scream along to death row like it’s karaoke.
Standout moment: “When the priest comes to read me the last rites…” – CHILLS.
4. Phil Anselmo – “Cemetery Gates” (Pantera)
⚡ Album: Cowboys from Hell (1990)
💀 Vibe: Brooding rage meets operatic heartbreak
Phil wasn’t always just about the aggression — on “Cemetery Gates,” he showed incredible range, from whisper-soft sorrow to falsetto howls that could make angels cry. It’s Pantera at their most emotional, and Anselmo at his most vulnerable and venomous.
Standout moment: That falsetto duel with Dimebag’s guitar. Iconic. 🕊️
5. Tom Araya – “Angel of Death” (Slayer)
⚡ Album: Reign in Blood (1986)
💀 Vibe: A sonic chainsaw massacre
Speed, precision, and terror. “Angel of Death” opens with that scream — and it’s like being thrown into a mosh pit with the Grim Reaper. Tom Araya doesn’t just sing this — he executes it. At blistering speed. With surgical savagery.
Standout moment: The scream at the 0:25 mark is LEGENDARY. Slayer fans tattoo it in their dreams.
6. Mike Patton – “Malpractice” (Faith No More)
⚡ Album: Angel Dust (1992)
💀 Vibe: Opera singer possessed by a deranged demon clown
Mike Patton is the vocal shapeshifter of metal. On “Malpractice,” he goes from guttural growls to banshee howls, cartoonish voices to horror-movie whispers. No one else could’ve made this chaos feel so intentional. A vocal performance that feels more like a psychological breakdown.
Standout moment: The breakdown screams that sound like someone being exorcised. Madness.
7. James Hetfield – “One” (Metallica)
⚡ Album: …And Justice for All (1988)
💀 Vibe: PTSD put to song
Hetfield acts this one — not just sings it. His voice moves from weary storytelling to panic, anger, and outright fury. It’s like watching a man lose everything in real time. That gruff snarl? That final breakdown? You feel every syllable like a punch to the gut.
Standout moment: “Darkness… imprisoning me…” – a metal mantra.
8. Corey Taylor – “Heretic Anthem” (Slipknot)
⚡ Album: Iowa (2001)
💀 Vibe: Satan went nu-metal
Corey Taylor’s voice is like a Swiss Army knife of rage — and “Heretic Anthem” is him unleashing every blade. Screams, growls, spoken fury, and that “If you’re 555 then I’m 666” chant? It’s pure, unfiltered Slipknot carnage. And Corey controls every second.
Standout moment: The way he spits the lyrics. It’s confrontational theatre. 🤘
9. David Draiman – “Down With the Sickness” (Disturbed)
⚡ Album: The Sickness (2000)
💀 Vibe: The soundtrack to a padded cell mosh pit
“OOH-WAH-AH-AH-AH.” Need we say more?
Draiman’s primal vocals became meme-worthy, but underneath that madness is an incredible rhythmic and guttural performance. He flips between deep chanting, rap-metal rage, and that now-iconic animalistic outburst. Ridiculous? Yes. But undeniably iconic.
Standout moment: That guttural monkey scream. You know the one. 🐒
10. King Diamond – “Welcome Home” (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond)
⚡ Album: Them (1988)
💀 Vibe: Victorian ghost story as screamed by a haunted opera diva
Nobody — nobody — sounds like King Diamond. His falsetto is sharper than a guillotine and weirder than a goat sacrifice on a school night. “Welcome Home” is spine-tingling horror metal, and King’s vocals are as theatrical as they are terrifying.
Standout moment: “GRANDMAAAAAAA!” – genuinely unsettling. Sleep with the light on, mun.
🎸 Honourable Mentions
Because c’mon… there’s too many legends to fit in one list:
- Ozzy Osbourne – “War Pigs” (wobbly, wild, and wickedly iconic)
- Lzzy Hale – “Love Bites (So Do I)” (a modern scream queen!)
- Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) – “Watching Over Me” (underrated pipes, pure power)
- Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) – “Laid to Rest” (growls with god-tier clarity)
🤘 Final Thoughts
These vocalists didn’t just sing metal – they breathed fire, tore down walls, and gave us the kind of performances you still shout in the shower two decades later. From Bruce’s battle cries to Halford’s sky-high shrieks, they each brought something otherworldly to the table.
YESS MUN! That’s how you deliver a metal vocal.
Now go scream in a field. Or a Greggs. We won’t judge. 🤘😈
Need a playlist of these screamers to terrify the neighbours? Or want a Part 2 with female vocal gods and even heavier growlers? Just say the word, butt! 🔥
