If you like your rock with salt in its hair, soul in its bones, and slide guitar drifting like a tide, then tidy yourself up โ Wille and the Bandits are back and sounding absolutely lush.
Following the punchy blues-rock stomp of Trouble Round the Bend and the brilliant Wheal Jane (which rightly bagged Classic Rock Track of the Week ๐), the band return with โReina del Marโ โ a track that dials back the volume knob and lets the feeling do the heavy lifting.
This latest release is lifted from the forthcoming album Salt Roots, out 27 February, produced by Wille alongside long-time collaborator Josiah Manning. And fair warning: this album is shaping up to be something special.
๐ โReina del Marโ โ Queen of the Sea
Reina del Mar leans into Latin-rock textures, warm rhythms, and a deep respect for the ocean โ not as something to conquer, but something ancient, sacred, and utterly unpredictable.
The song was shaped by time spent on Spainโs Atlantic coast, where tide, timing, and patience matter more than bravado. Itโs about waiting. Listening. Letting the sea decide when itโs ready to reveal its magic.
Wille explains:
โI wrote the initial riff around 10 years ago while travelling around Cuba and listening to some of the Buena Vista Social Club members still playing in Havanaโฆ It wasnโt until I was on tour with a few days off in Galicia, Spain, waiting for some surf to appear, that the idea of Maria came about. With its strong association with the sea, and Reina del Mar meaning โqueen of the seaโ in Spanish, the song started to developโฆ The song is about waiting for the sea to show its magic.โ
That influence runs deep โ hints of classic slide guitar traditions, warm Cuban rhythms, and coastal calm all wrapped into the Banditsโ unmistakable sound.
๐น World-Class Musicianship, No Flash Needed
This track breathes confidence. No showboating. No filler.
Harry Mackaillโs double bass anchors the song with elegance and depth, while Stevieโs piano brings rich Latin flavour, dancing between rhythm and melody. Willeโs slide guitar glides rather than shreds, and the vocal delivery is restrained, emotional, and quietly powerful.
Itโs the sound of a band that knows exactly when not to play โ and thatโs a rare skill.
๐ A Band for Music Lovers, Not Algorithms
Wille and the Bandits have never been a straight-up rock band โ and thank the riff gods for that. Theyโre musical explorers, drawing inspiration from across cultures and continents, without ever losing emotional truth.
Think of those great exploratory records of the 1970s, where artists expanded their worlds instead of repeating formulas. Salt Roots sits proudly in that lineage โ each track a journey, not a product.
๐ Ocean Roots & Real-World Impact
At its heart, Reina del Mar is a love letter to the ocean, a theme that runs throughout Salt Roots. Living by the sea has always shaped Wille, and swimming in the ocean almost every day has become a ritual he shares with his children.
That connection has led the band to partner with Surfers Against Sewage, using their music to help protect the waters that inspire them. Proper job. Music with meaning always hits harder. ๐๐
