⚽🔥 Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris Swaps Bass for Boots and Scores Twice in Perth Friendly 🤘

Footage of Iron Maiden founder Steve Harris trading the world stage for a football pitch has resurfaced — and the bass legend didn’t just make up the numbers. He scored twice, mun!

When most musicians have a few hours spare during a world tour, they probably put their feet up, order room service or disappear backstage with a cuppa.

Steve Harris? He finds a football pitch.

Footage originally filmed during Iron Maiden’s 2024 Australian tour shows the legendary bassist swapping his famous Fender Precision for a pair of boots and joining a friendly match at Macedonia Park in Perth.

And fair play to him, he wasn’t there for a gentle jog and a celebrity photo.

The Maiden mastermind scored two goals.

From Galloping Basslines to the Left Wing

Harris pulled on the red and yellow colours of Stirling Macedonia FC and lined up alongside the Groupies XI, showing that the competitive fire behind Iron Maiden is just as fierce when there’s a football at his feet.

Local television cameras captured the action, including one of Harris’ goals, before speaking to him after the match.

“I just love playing football, any chance I get,” Harris explained.

The lifelong football fanatic admitted he wasn’t as quick as he used to be and had dropped back into a left-midfield position.

Not as quick? The man was 68 at the time, touring the world with Iron Maiden and still scoring twice in a competitive friendly. Most of us make a noise like an ancient crypt opening whenever we stand up from the sofa.

Up the Irons!

Anyone familiar with Steve Harris will know that football has always been a huge part of his life.

The Iron Maiden founder is a devoted West Ham United supporter, with the club’s crest appearing on his instruments and stage equipment throughout his career. Before heavy metal came calling, Harris even trained with his beloved club as a youngster.

He ultimately chose thunderous basslines over muddy goalmouths, which worked out rather well considering he went on to form one of the biggest metal bands in history.

Still, football never left him.

Harris and members of Iron Maiden’s touring family have arranged matches around the world for decades. Whenever the band arrives in a new city, there’s always a chance Steve will locate a pitch, round up a team and squeeze in a game before showtime.

Some rock stars request champagne and luxury dressing rooms.

Steve Harris apparently requests a football and someone brave enough to mark him.

Playing for an Important Cause

The Perth match carried a deeper meaning beyond the fun and celebrity excitement.

It helped raise money and awareness for the DT38 Foundation, established in memory of Perth-born footballer Dylan Tombides.

Tombides developed through West Ham United’s academy and made his first-team debut for the club before dying from testicular cancer in 2014 at just 20 years old.

The foundation continues his legacy by raising awareness of testicular cancer and encouraging young men to recognise symptoms and seek medical advice early.

With Harris’ lifelong West Ham connection and Tombides’ roots in both Perth and the London club, the match brought music, football and community together for a genuinely worthwhile cause.

That’s the sort of thing we love to see: big riffs, bigger hearts and people using their platform to make a difference.

A Quick Kickabout Before an Arena Show

The friendly took place shortly before Iron Maiden played Perth’s RAC Arena on 1 September 2024, marking the band’s first concert in the city for eight years.

Just imagine being one of the local players.

One evening, you’re trying to stop Steve Harris from charging down the left wing. A few days later, he’s standing beneath an enormous Eddie while thousands of metalheads roar every word back at him.

You’d be watching from the crowd thinking, “That’s the bloke who stuck two past us!”

Iron Maiden were touring their spectacular The Future Past Tour, combining material from 1986’s Somewhere in Time with songs from 2021’s Senjutsu and a collection of Maiden favourites.

The production was enormous, the performances were relentless and Harris still found enough energy to play football between shows.

The bloke clearly doesn’t understand the meaning of a quiet afternoon.

Football and Heavy Metal: A Perfect Match

Football and heavy metal have more in common than you might think.

Both inspire fierce loyalty, deafening chants, questionable clothing choices and long journeys through dreadful weather. They create unforgettable highs, heartbreaking defeats and passionate arguments between people who’ll probably be sharing a pint ten minutes later.

As Welsh fans, we understand that better than most. We’ll follow our teams through rain, wind and transport chaos before declaring the entire ordeal absolutely brilliant.

Harris embodies that shared passion. Football isn’t a publicity stunt for him; it has remained part of his life since long before Iron Maiden conquered the planet.

Even after decades of tours, albums and packed arenas, give him an opportunity to play and he’ll lace up his boots.

Still a Menace Down the Left

The footage proves Steve Harris can cause trouble with more than a bass guitar.

He scored twice, helped shine a light on an important charity and then returned to his day job of leading one of heavy metal’s greatest bands.

That’s not a bad week at the office, butt.

We’re now waiting for the full Iron Maiden football team to tour Britain. Harris can play in midfield, Bruce Dickinson can fly everyone to the away fixtures and Eddie can go in goal.

Nobody is getting past a twelve-foot undead mascot.

Steve Harris: bassist, songwriter, football fanatic and still a menace down the left. Up the Irons! ⚽🤘🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
