🧠 The Prince of Darkness, Back in the Spotlight

You’d think after a lifetime of bats, booze and bedlam, Ozzy would finally be putting his feet up with a cuppa and the telly remote. But no — No Escape From Now proves there’s still fire in the Brummie madman’s belly.

The doc takes us deep into Ozzy’s mind and music, tracing his road from Black Sabbath’s industrial chaos in Birmingham to his solo superstardom, his health battles, and his fight to keep performing. It’s emotional, raw, and occasionally hilarious — basically, everything Ozzy’s ever been.

🎥 The Tone: Half Therapy Session, Half Chaos Rewind

This isn’t your typical “greatest hits” doc. It’s confessional. It’s uncomfortable. And it’s absolutely riveting.

We see Ozzy reflecting on Parkinson’s, his spine surgeries, and that infamous bat incident (yep, it’s back again 🦇). But unlike past retrospectives, No Escape From Now feels like Ozzy trying to make peace with being mortal — which, coming from a man who’s basically survived everything from rabid animals to Randy Rhoads’ death to MTV, hits deep.

🎤 Sharon Speaks (And Doesn’t Hold Back)

Sharon, as ever, is brutally honest. She admits the toll that fame, drugs, and constant touring took on their marriage — and you can feel the love and the weariness in every word.

But Sharon’s still Sharon — fiery, loyal, hilarious — and the way she talks about Ozzy’s resilience will have you yelling, “Proper job, girl!” across the living room.

🪦 Themes of Mortality and Madness

The film title couldn’t be more perfect. There’s no escape from ageing, pain, or legacy — and Ozzy knows it. But instead of hiding from it, he leans into it like he’s walking on stage at Donington again.

Clips of his final live moments, particularly that spine-chilling performance from his “bat throne” at Villa Park, feel almost like a farewell letter to the fans. The man could barely move — yet still sang with that demonic snarl that launched a thousand bands. That’s metal, mun. 🖤

🤘 The Music Moments: Spine-Tingling

You get everything from Sabbath classics to solo bangers like Crazy Train, Bark at the Moon, and No More Tears. The archival footage is gorgeous — remastered and beautifully edited with Ozzy’s narration overlapping like the voice of a weary warlord looking back at his battles.

Hearing Paranoid and War Pigs while seeing young Ozzy bouncing around like a loon next to Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler? Absolute goosebumps.

🏥 The Reality Check

This isn’t all nostalgia and riffs. There’s a sobering look at the damage decades of touring, addiction, and accidents have done. When Ozzy says “I’m just trying to stay alive,” it’s not a punchline anymore — it’s a mission statement.

But what’s truly inspiring is how much he still cares. The man cries talking about letting fans down. You see it in his eyes: he’s not done, even if his body is.

🎬 Direction & Editing: Stylish and Brutal

The BBC have nailed the balance here. The documentary feels cinematic — cut with flashes of nightmare imagery, performance footage, and home videos that make it feel intimate and mythic at the same time.

It’s dark, yes, but it’s also funny as hell. The editors clearly understand that Ozzy’s life is equal parts tragedy and farce — one minute he’s talking about death, the next he’s swearing at the toaster. 😂

💬 The Quotes That Hit Hard

“I’m not afraid of dying… I just don’t want it to hurt.”
“Music’s been my salvation. It’s my drug now.”
“I’m not a f***ing hero. I’m just Ozzy from Birmingham.”

Simple, but they’ll stay with you.

🏴‍☠️ The Legacy Bit

No Escape From Now reminds us why Ozzy matters — not just as the Godfather of Heavy Metal, but as the blueprint for every misfit who found salvation through noise.

From Paranoid to Patient Number 9, he’s walked through hell and somehow made it sound good.

🧨 Final Verdict

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 — Proper Job!)

An emotional, chaotic, and darkly funny deep-dive into one of rock’s most unstoppable icons.
If The End was the final chapter, No Escape From Now is the epilogue — one that makes you want to raise a pint, crank up Iron Man, and scream:

“LONG LIVE OZZY!” 🦇🤘🔥

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
