A double-time downpicked tribute from The Riff Report Blog
“Still we victimize, no remorse, internalize…” โ Jeff Hanneman, Slayer
๐ฏ๏ธ MAY 2, 2013 โ WHEN THE BLADES WENT BLUNT
On May 2, 2013, metalheads across the globe stopped moshing and started mourning.
Jeff Hanneman, founding guitarist and the lyrical butcher behind some of Slayerโs most brutal tracks, died from liver failure at the age of 49.
The man who made riffs feel like shrapnel to the soul was gone.
And the Big Four suddenly felt like Big Three-And-A-Half.
โ๏ธ WHO WAS JEFF HANNEMAN?
- Born January 31, 1964, in Oakland, California
- Raised on punk, thrash, war stories, and righteous fury
- Co-founded Slayer in 1981 with Kerry King
- Wrote most of Slayerโs greatest songs โ Angel of Death, Raining Blood, War Ensemble, Dead Skin Mask, and South of Heaven? All Jeff.
He was quiet, deadly, and riff-obsessed.
While Kerry brought fire, Jeff brought ice. Cold, calculating, terrifyingly tight.
โHe didnโt say much, but when he picked up a guitar, you shut the f**k up and listened.โ โ Tom Araya
โฐ๏ธ THE SLAYER SOUND: BUILT ON HANNEMANโS HATE
Jeffโs riffs werenโt just fast.
They were designed to hurt you.
Buzzsaw tone. Razor-sharp precision. Punk fury injected into metal mayhem.
๐ฟ Albums That Were Basically War Crimes:
- Show No Mercy (1983) โ The birth of the beast
- Hell Awaits (1985) โ Satan said โhiโ and Jeff wrote the soundtrack
- Reign in Blood (1986) โ 28 minutes of pure thrash perfection
- South of Heaven (1988) โ Slowed down, but still soul-slashing
- Seasons in the Abyss (1990) โ Jeffโs groove mastery on full display
- God Hates Us All (2001) โ Modern, brutal, uncompromising
- World Painted Blood (2009) โ Jeffโs final full album ๐ฉธ
๐ THE SPIDER BITE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
In 2011, Jeff was bitten by a spider, leading to a necrotizing fasciitis infection (a flesh-eating disease).
He nearly lost his arm.
Slayer fans nearly lost their minds.
He sat out of tours. Struggled to play. Kerry King said Jeff never fully recovered โ mentally or physically.
Behind the scenes, Jeff was battling addiction, pain, and frustration.
He tried. He fought. But his liver gave out in 2013.
๐ฌ THE WORLD SCREAMED BACK
โWithout Jeff, thereโs no Slayer.โ โ Dave Lombardo
โHe was our brother.โ โ Kerry King
โHis riffs built my career.โ โ Scott Ian (Anthrax)
โThe most underrated metal songwriter of all time.โ โ Corey Taylor

- World Painted Blood โ His final fury
๐ฅ LEGACY: THE QUIET RIFF-KING

- Played like a machine โ but with feeling

- Wore a Dead Kennedys patch on stage till the end
๐ชฆ TRIBUTES STILL RAINING
