🎸❤️ American blues-rock powerhouses RIVAL SONS have announced an unexpected line-up change for their 2026 ‘Domestic Bliss’ US Tour, with longtime bassist Dave Beste temporarily stepping away to deal with important matters at home. But fear not, rockers! The show must go on, and the band have recruited experienced BEN HARPER AND THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS bassist Darwin Johnson to keep those thunderous basslines rolling!
Well, bloody hell, butt!
There’s been a bit of unexpected news coming out of the RIVAL SONS camp, and while it’s disappointing for fans hoping to see the band’s familiar line-up back together onstage, it’s also a reminder that sometimes life outside the world of rock ‘n’ roll needs to come first.
On Friday 23 October 2026, the Grammy-nominated American rockers confirmed that bassist Dave Beste would not be joining them for their 24-date Domestic Bliss US Tour.
The announcement came just one week before the opening concert in Boise, Idaho, on 30 October.
And considering how much work goes into preparing a major tour, that’s not exactly the sort of announcement any band wants to make at the last minute!
But rather than cancelling the shows or leaving fans wondering what would happen next, RIVAL SONS quickly confirmed that another hugely experienced musician would be stepping into the breach.
Darwin Johnson, best known for his work with BEN HARPER AND THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS, has taken over bass duties for the American tour.
And here’s the important bit.
The band have made it absolutely clear that Dave has their full support.
Because while we all love a cracking guitar solo, enormous drums and a bassline that makes your chest vibrate, there are moments when being there for your mates matters considerably more than getting another show under your belt.
Fair play to the lads, mun. That’s what being a proper band family is all about! 🤘❤️
❤️ RIVAL SONS Confirm Dave Beste Will Temporarily Step Away
The news was shared through the band’s official social media channels, including an Instagram post circulated by guitarist Scott Holiday, who fans will recognise by his online handle mrfuzzlord.
In their announcement, the band explained:
“Dave needs to temporarily step aside to handle some important matters at home, and the band fully supports this decision.”
They also thanked Darwin Johnson for agreeing to join the tour at short notice and reassured fans that they were looking forward to getting back on the road.
Importantly, RIVAL SONS have not publicly disclosed the precise circumstances behind Dave’s absence.
And quite frankly, butt, that’s exactly where the matter should remain unless Dave himself decides to share more.
Musicians might spend enormous amounts of their lives in the public eye, but they’re still human beings with families, responsibilities and personal lives.
Just because somebody performs in front of thousands of people doesn’t mean the rest of the world is entitled to know everything happening behind closed doors.
The band have also not announced a confirmed date for Beste’s return.
However, their wording makes it clear that the arrangement is temporary.
There has been no announcement suggesting Dave has permanently left RIVAL SONS.
And that’s an important distinction.
For now, the priority is giving Dave the time and space he needs while the rest of the band continue fulfilling their touring commitments.
We certainly hope everything works out for him.
🎸 Who Is Dave Beste? The Man Behind The RIVAL SONS Groove!
For anyone unfamiliar with RIVAL SONS, Dave Beste is considerably more than just the bloke standing at the back of the stage holding a bass guitar.
His musical contribution forms an important part of the band’s distinctive sound.
RIVAL SONS aren’t your typical modern rock outfit.
Their music draws heavily from classic blues, psychedelic rock, hard rock and soul, combining enormous guitar riffs with rich, rhythmic arrangements.
And beneath all that wonderful noise sits the bass.
The instrument that provides the weight.
The movement.
And the musical foundation that allows everything else to breathe.
Beste has been part of RIVAL SONS since 2013, helping shape the band’s sound throughout some of their most successful years.
His recorded contributions include albums such as:
🎸 Great Western Valkyrie (2014)
A powerful collection of blues-driven rock songs that helped elevate the band’s international reputation.
🔥 Hollow Bones (2016)
An album packed with enormous grooves, dramatic arrangements and the kind of classic-rock swagger that RIVAL SONS do so well.
🤘 Feral Roots (2019)
The Grammy-nominated record featuring standout tracks including Do Your Worst and Too Bad.
🎶 Darkfighter (2023)
The first of two albums released during an especially productive year for the band.
⚡ Lightbringer (2023)
A companion release demonstrating the group’s willingness to explore different musical textures while maintaining their unmistakable identity.
Across these records, Beste’s playing has helped create the deep, bluesy foundation that makes RIVAL SONS such a formidable live band.
And that’s why his absence will undoubtedly be noticed by longtime fans.
When you’ve watched a particular group of musicians perform together for years, you become familiar with their chemistry.
The little moments.
The interaction between the drummer and bassist.
The way a song suddenly becomes heavier when everybody locks into the same groove.
You can’t simply replace that overnight.
But fortunately, the band have found somebody with plenty of experience.
🤘 Meet Darwin Johnson – The Man Stepping Into Some Seriously Big Boots!
So, who’s the musician entrusted with keeping those RIVAL SONS basslines rumbling across America?
Darwin Johnson is a highly experienced bassist whose career stretches across gospel, soul, blues, rock, pop and R&B.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Johnson grew up surrounded by music.
He was the seventh of nine musically talented siblings and first began learning bass guitar at just seven years old, encouraged by his father.
Now that’s what we call getting an early start!
At seven years old, most of us were still figuring out how to ride a bicycle without falling into a hedge.
Darwin was already learning the foundations of a musical career.
His early musical education included performing in churches, school jazz ensembles and rock groups.
He later attended the University of Florida, where he continued developing his musicianship through jazz and gospel performances.
In 1997, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue further opportunities.
And over the following years, he built an impressive reputation as a professional bassist.
His career has included performing or recording with artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Colbie Caillat, Chante Moore, Jesse McCartney and Ludacris, among others.
In 2021, Johnson joined BEN HARPER AND THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS, becoming part of the group following the death of their much-loved bassist Juan Nelson.
Working with Ben Harper requires a musician capable of moving between different musical styles.
Blues.
Soul.
Rock.
Funk.
Reggae influences.
And delicate, emotionally driven arrangements.
That’s an impressive musical toolkit.
And one that should prove extremely useful when tackling the extensive RIVAL SONS catalogue.
🎸 Can Darwin Johnson Handle The RIVAL SONS Sound?
There’s no doubt that joining an established band immediately before a major tour is a demanding assignment.
You’ve got to learn the songs.
Understand the arrangements.
Become familiar with the other musicians.
And work out how everything fits together onstage.
But RIVAL SONS have recruited somebody who understands the importance of groove, musical feel and adaptability.
And those qualities are absolutely essential to this particular band.
While Scott Holiday delivers those wonderfully gritty guitar riffs and Jay Buchanan unleashes his extraordinary vocals, the rhythm section needs to hold everything together.
No pressure, Darwin!
Just step onto a stage with one of the finest modern blues-rock bands around and make it sound like you’ve been playing with them for years.
Easy enough, right?
I’d be sweating more than a Welsh bloke trying to carry six pints through a packed Steelhouse Festival crowd, mun! 😂🍻
🥁 Just Two Rehearsals Before The Opening Show!
Here’s something that makes Johnson’s arrival even more impressive.
According to a backstage interview with Scott Holiday published by VintageRock.com following the tour’s opening concert, the band managed just two rehearsals with their new bassist before taking the stage.
Two!
And apparently, those rehearsal sessions involved preparing approximately 30 songs from across the band’s catalogue.
Now that’s a seriously demanding workload.
Learning one unfamiliar song properly can take time.
Learning 30 songs while adjusting to the chemistry of an established band?
That’s a proper musical challenge.
But Johnson was ready for the opening night in Boise on Friday 30 October.
The performance took place at the Knitting Factory, with THE BLUE STONES and THE VELVETEERS providing support.
The concert reportedly experienced some opening-night technical difficulties, but the band delivered a substantial set featuring material from different periods of their career.
The reported 15-song set included Open My Eyes, All Over The Road, Sugar on the Bone, Too Bad, Pressure & Time, Electric Man, Do Your Worst and Secret.
It was an encouraging start to the tour under difficult circumstances.
And for fans wondering whether Johnson would be able to step into Beste’s role, his appearance at the opening show demonstrated that the band had successfully prepared for the change.
That’s a proper professional musician for you.
No fuss.
No unnecessary drama.
Just get the bass plugged in and get on with the job.
🔥 The Domestic Bliss Tour Is Now Underway!
Despite the temporary line-up change, RIVAL SONS have continued with their previously announced American tour.
The Domestic Bliss Tour opened on 30 October 2026 in Boise, Idaho, and is scheduled to conclude on 29 November 2026 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The 24-date run marks the band’s first substantial American touring schedule since their 2024 Two-Headed Beast run with CLUTCH.
And judging by the original tour announcement, the musicians were particularly excited about returning to American cities they hadn’t managed to visit during their previous album campaigns.
Guitarist Scott Holiday explained that the band intended to mix things up by performing songs from across their catalogue.
That means fans could be treated to a varied selection of classic favourites, deep cuts and perhaps material that hasn’t appeared regularly in recent live performances.
And for anyone who loves RIVAL SONS, that’s a pretty exciting prospect.
Because this is a band with a seriously impressive collection of songs.
From the raw energy of Pressure & Time to the huge, dramatic arrangements of their more recent recordings, there’s an enormous amount of material to choose from.
And with Johnson temporarily taking over bass duties, the concerts will offer something slightly different from the band’s usual live performances.

🎸 THE BLUE STONES And THE VELVETEERS Join The Tour!
RIVAL SONS aren’t hitting the road alone.
Joining them for most dates are two bands bringing their own distinctive flavours of blues, rock and alternative music.
🔥 THE BLUE STONES – Canadian Blues-Rock Power!
Canadian duo THE BLUE STONES have built their reputation around a powerful combination of blues-influenced guitar playing, driving rhythms and modern alternative rock.
Formed by vocalist and guitarist Tarek Jafar and drummer Justin Tessier, the group have developed a sound that blends the raw energy of garage rock with blues-inspired songwriting.
They’re the sort of band that proves you don’t necessarily need six musicians onstage to make an enormous racket.
Sometimes two people, a guitar and a drum kit are more than enough.
Their music makes them a natural choice for the RIVAL SONS audience.
And for fans arriving early, they’re certainly worth checking out.
🤘 THE VELVETEERS – Colorado Rock With Serious Attitude!
Also joining most dates are THE VELVETEERS, the Colorado-based rock outfit known for their raw, heavy and sometimes wonderfully chaotic sound.
Fronted by vocalist and guitarist Demi Demitro, the group have earned attention for their energetic performances and distinctive approach to alternative rock.
Their music brings together gritty guitars, explosive rhythms and a strong garage-rock spirit.
And anyone who enjoys the heavier, more experimental corners of rock music should find plenty to get excited about.
Both support acts are scheduled for the majority of the tour.
However, the Cleveland show on 18 November and Worcester show on 22 November were originally announced with THE BLUE STONES as the sole support act.
As always, fans should check individual venue information for any last-minute changes.
🎤 RIVAL SONS – One Of Modern Rock’s Finest Live Bands!
If you’ve never experienced RIVAL SONS live, you’re missing out on something special.
The band emerged from Long Beach, California, in 2009 and have spent the years since establishing themselves as one of the most respected names in contemporary blues rock.
Their musical identity draws inspiration from the great classic rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s.
But while comparisons with LED ZEPPELIN, FREE, BAD COMPANY and other legendary artists are understandable, RIVAL SONS have developed a personality of their own.
And a huge part of that comes down to the extraordinary combination of musicians involved.
🎤 Jay Buchanan – The Voice That Could Shake The Valleys!
Frontman Jay Buchanan possesses one of the most distinctive voices in modern rock.
His singing combines soul, blues, grit and enormous emotional range.
He can deliver delicate melodies one moment and unleash an absolutely thunderous vocal performance the next.
It’s the sort of voice that grabs your attention immediately.
And when he really lets rip, you’d be forgiven for thinking somebody had plugged an entire Welsh male voice choir into a Marshall amplifier!
🎸 Scott Holiday – The Fuzz-Loving Guitar Wizard!
Guitarist Scott Holiday is the man responsible for much of the band’s distinctive guitar sound.
His playing combines enormous blues riffs, psychedelic textures and wonderfully dirty fuzz tones.
He’s a guitarist who understands that sometimes one brilliantly placed riff can make more impact than a thousand unnecessary notes.
And considering his online name is mrfuzzlord, it’s probably fair to say the bloke enjoys a decent guitar pedal!
🥁 Mike Miley – The Engine Room!
Behind the drum kit sits Mike Miley, whose playing provides the power and rhythmic flexibility essential to the RIVAL SONS sound.
His drumming brings together classic rock energy, blues influences and dynamic arrangements.
And when Miley locks into a groove with the bass guitar, the whole band comes alive.
It’s that musical chemistry that makes RIVAL SONS such an exciting live outfit.
And it’s also what makes Beste’s temporary absence such an important change.
But with Darwin Johnson now stepping into the rhythm section, there’s an opportunity for the band to explore a slightly different dynamic while maintaining the music that fans love.
🦇 Remember When RIVAL SONS Supported BLACK SABBATH?
Here’s a little reminder of just how far RIVAL SONS have come.
Back in 2016, the band were selected to support BLACK SABBATH during the legendary Birmingham metal pioneers’ The End farewell tour.
Yes, that BLACK SABBATH!
Ozzy Osbourne. Tony Iommi. Geezer Butler.
Some of the most influential musicians in heavy metal history.
And RIVAL SONS were invited to share the stage with them.
That’s an enormous endorsement for any rock band.
The experience helped introduce RIVAL SONS to audiences across the world, bringing their blues-driven hard rock to enormous venues.
Since then, the group have continued building their reputation through studio albums, international touring and major festival appearances.
They’ve also shared stages with artists including THE ROLLING STONES, AC/DC and GUNS N’ ROSES.
Not a bad collection of names to have on your musical CV, is it, butt?
And for a band that still values raw guitar tones, powerful songs and proper live musicianship, those experiences have helped establish their place within modern rock.
💿 New RIVAL SONS Music Is Also On The Way!
As if a major American tour wasn’t enough to keep everybody busy, RIVAL SONS have also been working on another studio album.
The band confirmed earlier in 2026 that writing and recording had begun for the follow-up to Darkfighter and Lightbringer.
Both albums arrived in 2023, showcasing different aspects of the band’s songwriting.
Darkfighter delivered powerful rock arrangements, emotional intensity and the band’s unmistakable blues-driven energy.
Lightbringer followed later that year, offering a companion collection that explored different musical ideas while remaining connected to the same creative period.
And now the musicians are preparing their next chapter.
The forthcoming record is expected in 2027, although no confirmed release date or complete tracklist has been announced.
Meanwhile, frontman Jay Buchanan has been developing his solo career.
His debut solo album, Weapons Of Beauty, arrived in February 2026, exploring a more intimate, cinematic and Americana-influenced direction.
Guitarist Scott Holiday has also pursued solo music.
So there’s certainly no shortage of creative activity within the RIVAL SONS camp.
And while fans understandably want to see Dave Beste back onstage, the band’s commitment to continuing their tour demonstrates their determination to keep moving forwards.
❤️ Sometimes Family Comes Before Rock ‘N’ Roll
There’s something particularly important about the way RIVAL SONS have handled this announcement.
They haven’t turned Dave’s absence into a spectacle.
They haven’t shared unnecessary personal information.
And they haven’t invited speculation about his private circumstances.
Instead, they’ve offered a simple message.
Dave needs time at home.
The band support him.
And they’ve found an experienced musician to cover the tour.
That’s it.
And, frankly, that’s enough.
We sometimes forget just how demanding life can be for touring musicians.
From the outside, it can look like one enormous adventure.
Travelling around the world.
Playing music every night.
Meeting fans.
Seeing incredible places.
But there’s another side to touring.
Long journeys.
Time away from family.
Constant travelling.
And the challenge of maintaining relationships and responsibilities while spending weeks or months on the road.
When something important happens at home, musicians face decisions that most people never have to make in such a public setting.
And sometimes the right decision is simply to step away.
Not permanently.
Not dramatically.
Just long enough to deal with whatever needs attention.
That’s why seeing RIVAL SONS publicly supporting their bandmate matters.
Because no concert, album or tour is more important than the wellbeing of the people involved.
And for fans, the best response is straightforward.
Respect Dave’s privacy.
Support the band.
And wish him all the best.
That’s proper rock ‘n’ roll brotherhood, mun. ❤️
🇬🇧 Will RIVAL SONS Return To The UK?
Naturally, this announcement will also have British fans wondering when they might get another opportunity to see RIVAL SONS.
The current Domestic Bliss itinerary is focused entirely on the United States.
No UK dates have been announced as part of this particular tour.
However, the band have a long history of performing across Britain and Europe.
And they’ve developed a loyal following among audiences who love classic hard rock, blues and powerful live performances.
Here in Wales, we’d certainly welcome another visit!
Because let’s be honest, RIVAL SONS would sound absolutely magnificent blasting across the Welsh mountains at Steelhouse Festival.
Imagine that glorious Scott Holiday guitar tone echoing across the hillside while Jay Buchanan unleashes those incredible vocals.
The sun setting.
Thousands of rock fans raising their pints.
And the entire mountain shaking to Do Your Worst.
Now THAT would be a proper tidy evening, butt! 🐉🤘
For now, though, fans will have to keep an eye on the band’s official channels for further announcements.
And we certainly hope that when they eventually return to UK stages, Dave Beste will be back where he belongs, holding down those enormous bass grooves.
🔥 The Riff Report Verdict – The Riffs Continue, But Family Comes First!
There’s no denying that Dave Beste’s temporary absence is disappointing news for RIVAL SONS fans.
He’s been an important part of the group’s sound for more than a decade.
And when you’ve spent years watching a particular line-up develop its musical chemistry, any unexpected change is going to feel significant.
But there are far more important things in life than completing another tour.
And it’s genuinely encouraging to see a band make that clear.
RIVAL SONS have given Dave their full support.
They’ve recruited an enormously experienced musician in Darwin Johnson.
And they’ve kept their American touring commitments moving forwards.
Considering Johnson reportedly had just two rehearsals before the opening concert, that’s an impressive achievement in itself.
Thirty songs to learn.
Twenty-four shows across America.
And one of modern blues rock’s most demanding rhythm sections to step into.
Talk about being thrown in at the deep end!
But if there’s one thing professional musicians understand, it’s the importance of being ready when the music starts.
And Darwin Johnson has certainly answered the call.
As for Dave, we hope everything works out for him and that he’s able to return when the time is right.
Because some things matter considerably more than standing beneath a spotlight.
Family. Friendship. Looking after your own.
That’s what this story is really about.
So fair play to RIVAL SONS for handling the situation with understanding and respect.
Fair play to Darwin Johnson for stepping in at such short notice.
And most importantly, all the very best to Dave Beste.
The bass can wait, butt. The important things come first. ❤️🎸
