Friday – Main Stage – 2:30pm

There are festival sets that entertain.

There are festival sets that impress.

Then there are festival sets that feel like a full-scale invasion.

King Kraken’s Friday afternoon appearance at Steelhouse Festival 2026 was exactly that.

With the Welsh mountains towering behind them and a passionate home crowd gathered in front of the Main Stage, King Kraken delivered a colossal performance packed with crushing riffs, towering vocals, outrageous energy and enough flames and pyrotechnics to make the entire mountainside feel like it had wandered into a stadium show.

From the moment they walked on stage at 2:30pm, there was a feeling that this was not going to be an ordinary afternoon.

It was loud.

It was fiery.

It was gloriously over the top.

And it was absolutely brilliant.

🔥 A Welsh Welcome Fit for Kings

Being a Welsh band at Steelhouse always brings a little extra emotion, and the reception King Kraken received proved just how much they mean to the home crowd.

The roar that greeted them as they took to the stage could easily have been mistaken for a headline act.

Battle jackets filled the front rows.

Horns were raised high.

The atmosphere was electric before the first riff had even landed.

King Kraken fed off that energy from the very beginning, looking like a band determined to turn their Steelhouse appearance into a proper Welsh rock celebration.

🎤 Mark Donoghue Was Born for Stages Like This

At the centre of the chaos stood Mark Donoghue, whose commanding vocal performance was one of the highlights of Friday afternoon.

His powerful, gritty voice cut effortlessly through the wall of guitars, delivering every lyric with authority and passion.

Whether he was unleashing full-throttle rock vocals or speaking to the audience between songs, Donoghue had complete control of the crowd.

His charisma was impossible to ignore.

There was not a second where he looked anything other than completely at home.

The interaction with the Steelhouse faithful was brilliant throughout, with plenty of smiles, banter and genuine appreciation for the support shown to one of Wales’ finest modern rock bands.

🎸 Riffs That Rumbled Across the Mountain

King Kraken have built their reputation on writing massive riffs, and Steelhouse got them in abundance.

Every song landed like a heavyweight punch.

Crunching guitars rolled across the valley while soaring lead work added melody and flair without ever losing that trademark heaviness.

The guitar tone was absolutely monstrous and perfectly suited to the open-air surroundings.

Every solo was met with cheers, while the relentless rhythm playing kept heads banging from start to finish.

This was proper, honest, no-nonsense hard rock.

🔥 More Flames Than a Rammstein Concert

As if the riffs were not already huge enough, King Kraken arrived armed with an outrageous amount of fire and pyrotechnics.

Every chorus seemed to be accompanied by towering blasts of flame, with bursts of pyro erupting across the stage and sending waves of heat towards the front rows.

Honestly, it felt like they had more flames and pyrotechnics than a Rammstein concert.

The fire was not just there for decoration either.

Each blast was timed perfectly with the band’s biggest riffs, hardest drum hits and most explosive moments, adding another level of drama to an already thunderous performance.

The flames kept coming.

The crowd kept roaring.

And the mountain seemed to get hotter with every song.

At times, it felt like King Kraken had raided the production cupboard of a major stadium tour and dragged the whole lot up the Steelhouse mountain.

It was ridiculous.

It was spectacular.

And it fitted the band perfectly.

Combined with their massive sound, the pyrotechnics helped create one of the most visually memorable performances of the entire Friday line-up.

🥁 The Rhythm Section Was Relentless

Behind the guitars, the rhythm section was absolutely immense.

The bass growled with real authority, adding depth to every track, while the drums drove the set forward with precision and power.

Together, they created the kind of groove that made it impossible to stand still.

Even fans watching from further up the hill found themselves nodding along as the band powered through one anthem after another.

Every member looked fully locked into the performance, feeding off the flames, the noise and the roar of the home crowd.

🤘 The Crowd Were Right Behind Them

One of the joys of Steelhouse is watching Welsh bands receive the hero’s welcome they deserve, and King Kraken embraced every second of it.

The audience responded with huge cheers, fists in the air and constant applause between songs.

Every chorus seemed to get louder.

Every riff was greeted with another sea of raised horns.

Every blast of pyro brought another roar from the crowd.

There was a genuine sense of pride in the air as festival-goers watched one of Wales’ own absolutely own the Main Stage.

🌄 Made for the Mountain

Some bands look comfortable on festival stages.

King Kraken looked like they belonged there.

Their larger-than-life sound perfectly matched the dramatic Steelhouse backdrop, filling every corner of the arena with huge riffs, infectious hooks and unrelenting energy.

Add in the towering flames, and suddenly the whole mountainside looked like the set of a heavy metal action film.

This was exactly the kind of performance that gets people talking for the rest of the weekend.

🔥 A Band Going from Strength to Strength

It is impossible not to admire just how far King Kraken have come.

From building their reputation through relentless touring to becoming one of the UK’s most exciting hard rock acts, every performance seems bigger and stronger than the last.

Steelhouse 2026 felt like another major step forward.

They did not simply perform.

They made a statement.

The songs sounded bigger.

The stage presence felt stronger.

And the production made it clear that King Kraken were there to give Steelhouse a proper show rather than simply play through a setlist.

🎪 One of Friday’s Early Highlights

Early afternoon festival slots can often be difficult.

People are still arriving.

Some are wandering around looking for food.

Others are working out whether it is too early for another pint.

King Kraken made all of that completely irrelevant.

By the end of their set, the crowd had grown significantly, with plenty of fans making their way towards the stage after hearing the thunderous sound and seeing flames erupting above the arena.

That is always the sign of a band doing something special.

🍻 The Riff Report Verdict

King Kraken delivered exactly what Steelhouse Festival demanded — massive riffs, powerhouse vocals, relentless energy, unmistakable Welsh pride and more flames than anybody reasonably expected at half past two in the afternoon.

Mark Donoghue was exceptional throughout, leading the charge with confidence and charisma, while the band behind him played with the chemistry and conviction of musicians who know exactly who they are.

The pyrotechnics pushed the performance into another league, transforming an already brilliant hard rock set into a full-blown festival spectacle.

This was not just another festival appearance.

This felt like a homecoming.

A loud, fiery and slightly unhinged homecoming.

And judging by the reaction from the Steelhouse faithful, King Kraken’s reign on the Welsh rock scene is only getting bigger.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — 10/10

Highlights:

  • 🎤 Mark Donoghue’s commanding vocal performance
  • 🎸 Huge riffs that echoed around the mountain
  • 🥁 A relentless rhythm section
  • 🔥 Towering flames and outrageous pyrotechnics
  • 🤘 Fantastic crowd interaction and Welsh pride
  • 🐙 One of Friday afternoon’s defining performances

🤘 The Riff Report Says…

“King Kraken did not just climb the Steelhouse mountain — they set fire to it. Monster riffs, a frontman in irresistible form and enough flames to make Rammstein check their gas bill turned this into one of Friday’s most spectacular sets. Proper Welsh heavy rock chaos, mun!” 🐙👑🎸🏔️🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
