Cardiff nightlife is preparing to say goodbye to one of St Mary Streetโs most recognisable watering holes, with Walkabout reportedly set to close permanently on Saturday, 5 September 2026.
And if youโve ever stumbled through Cardiff city centre after a gig, rugby match, football game, Christmas party or one of those nights where โweโre only having oneโ somehow became 3amโฆ thereโs a decent chance Walkabout featured somewhere in the story. ๐๐บ
The Australian-themed sports bar has been part of Cardiffโs nightlife landscape for years, but according to reports circulating this week, its time on St Mary Street is coming to an end.
For Cardiff, thatโs another familiar name disappearing from the city-centre nightlife map.
๐ฆ๐บ Walkabout Cardiff Reportedly Closing on 5 September
The venue at 65โ74 St Mary Street, Cardiff, CF10 1FA is reportedly due to shut its doors permanently on Saturday, 5 September 2026.
At the time of writing, Walkaboutโs own website is still advertising the Cardiff venue, describing it as a destination for live sport, food, drinks and late-night parties.
That makes the reported closure particularly striking โ and there may still be details surrounding the future of the site that have yet to emerge publicly.
Whatever eventually happens to the building, though, if the Walkabout name really is disappearing from St Mary Street, itโll be the end of a pretty sizeable chapter in Cardiff nightlife.
๐ป More Than Just Another Cardiff Bar
Walkabout was never exactly the place you visited for a quiet half-pint while discussing the finer points of progressive rock.
Nah, mun.
This was Walkabout.
Big screens. Big nights. Football. Rugby. Students. Stag parties. Hen parties. DJs. Burgers. Pints. Questionable dancing.
And usually at least one person in the group announcing:
โIโm absolutely fine!โ
They were not fine. ๐
Walkabout built its reputation around being somewhere you could watch major sporting events during the day before the venue gradually transformed into something considerably louder as the evening rolled on.
Its current facilities include HD screens, Sky Sports, TNT Sports, food, a function area and a late licence, while Friday and Saturday opening hours have stretched as late as 3am.
For generations of Cardiff students and weekend visitors, it became one of those places you simply knew.
You might love it.
You might hate it.
You might have absolutely no recollection of leaving it.
But you knew it. ๐บ๐
๐ Cardiff Match Days Wonโt Quite Be the Same
One area where Walkabout has always made its presence felt is sport.
When Wales are playing rugby in Cardiff, the entire city centre basically transforms into one enormous red-shirted festival anyway.
Walkabout fitted perfectly into that madness.
Packed bars, giant screens, people screaming at referees who definitely couldnโt hear them and complete strangers becoming lifelong mates for approximately 80 minutes.
Football, Formula 1, boxing, darts and plenty more have also regularly appeared across the venueโs screens.
It wasnโt merely a nightclub.
For plenty of customers, it was their sports bar.
And losing another large-capacity city-centre venue will inevitably change the landscape around St Mary Street.
๐ธ Another Cardiff Nightlife Institution Disappears
This is the bit that stings.
Cities naturally change. Venues open, venues close and new businesses arrive.
But Cardiff has seen plenty of famous names disappear over the years, and every closure takes another little piece of the cityโs nightlife history with it.
Walkabout might not have been a rock venue in the traditional sense, but gig-goers know the routine.
Band finishes.
Lights come up.
Everyone gets booted out of the arena.
Someone asks:
โWhere are we going now?โ
And suddenly youโre marching through Cardiff looking for somewhere still serving booze.
Walkabout has been part of that ecosystem.
For a music city, pubs, clubs, late-night bars and venues all feed into each other. A healthy nightlife isnโt just about the concert itself โ itโs the entire evening surrounding it.
The pre-gig pint.
The post-gig pint.
The โweโve missed the last train so we might as well carry onโ pint.
All culturally significant Welsh traditions, obviously. ๐บ๐ค
๐๏ธ What Happens to the St Mary Street Site?
Thatโs now going to be one of the biggest questions.
Walkabout occupies a substantial location right in the heart of Cardiffโs nightlife district, so attention will inevitably turn towards what could replace it.
Interestingly, a shadow premises licence application was published earlier in 2026 for the Walkabout address, covering alcohol sales, live and recorded music, dancing and late-night opening.
That doesnโt tell us exactly what is coming next, but it does make the future of the premises worth keeping a very close eye on.
A new bar?
A completely different brand?
A redevelopment?
At the moment, weโll have to wait and see.
But a site of that size, sitting on St Mary Street, is unlikely to remain unnoticed for very long.

If 5 September really is the final night, expect plenty of Cardiff residents to have stories about the place.
Some will remember student nights.
Some will remember rugby days.
Some will remember birthday parties.

Whatever your opinion of the place, Walkabout has undeniably been one of the most recognisable names on Cardiffโs late-night scene.
And when a venue thatโs been woven into a city for years disappears, it deserves a little acknowledgement.
So if the doors really do close permanently on Saturday, 5 September 2026, thatโs another familiar Cardiff institution heading into the history books.
Plenty of pints poured.
Plenty of sport watched.
Plenty of terrible dancing witnessed.
And undoubtedly thousands upon thousands of stories that probably shouldnโt be repeated in front of someoneโs mother. ๐
