There was a time when you couldn’t open MySpace without seeing brightly coloured hair, neon skinny jeans, eyeliner thick enough to survive a hurricane and a Blood on the Dance Floor song blasting from someone’s profile. Love them or hate them, Blood on the Dance Floor (BOTDF) became one of the biggest names to emerge from the late-2000s scene movement, building a massive online following long before TikTok, Spotify playlists and viral Instagram reels became the norm.

For thousands of alternative fans, they represented individuality, rebellion and a place to belong. For others, they were one of the most polarising bands of their generation. Today, their legacy is impossible to discuss without acknowledging the serious allegations that ultimately overshadowed their music and career.

This is the complete story of Blood on the Dance Floor.

🎤 Where It All Began

Blood on the Dance Floor was formed in Orlando, Florida, in 2006 by Dahvie Vanity (born Jesus David Torres) and guitarist Christopher Mongillo.

Originally conceived as an experimental electronic rock project, the band’s earliest material mixed dance beats with horror-inspired themes, glam aesthetics and alternative rock influences. Before long, Mongillo departed, leaving Dahvie Vanity to continue the project alone while retaining the band’s striking name.

Although line-up changes would become a recurring theme throughout BOTDF’s career, Dahvie remained the constant figure at the centre of the project.

💻 The Perfect Band for the MySpace Era

The late 2000s were a unique period in music. MySpace had become the go-to destination for discovering new artists, particularly within the rock, metal and alternative scenes. Bands no longer needed major record labels to build an audience—they simply needed a memorable image, catchy songs and an online presence.

Blood on the Dance Floor ticked every box.

Their colourful appearance made them instantly recognisable. Neon hair, dramatic makeup, cartoon-inspired outfits and unapologetically over-the-top fashion became their trademark. They embraced the “scene” aesthetic completely, standing out from countless other bands trying to make their mark online.

The music was equally distinctive, blending electronic dance beats with pop melodies, screaming vocals, hip-hop rhythms and occasional heavy guitar riffs. The result was loud, chaotic and impossible to ignore.

While critics often dismissed the sound, younger fans embraced it wholeheartedly.

🎙️ Enter Jayy Von Monroe

One of the biggest turning points in Blood on the Dance Floor’s history came with the arrival of Jayy Von Monroe.

Jayy’s clean vocals complemented Dahvie’s rap-style delivery and harsher vocal approach, creating the duo that most fans would come to associate with the band’s most successful years.

Their contrasting vocal styles became one of BOTDF’s defining characteristics and helped propel the band to even greater popularity.

For many longtime fans, this line-up represented the band’s creative peak.

💿 Building a Discography

Unlike many artists who spent years between releases, Blood on the Dance Floor produced music at an astonishing pace.

Major studio albums included:

  • Let’s Start a Riot! (2008)
  • It’s Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World (2008)
  • Epic (2010)
  • All the Rage!! (2011)
  • Evolution (2012)
  • Bad Blood (2013)
  • Bitchcraft (2014)
  • Scissors (2016)

Alongside these came numerous EPs, singles, remixes and special editions, ensuring fans always had new material to enjoy.

Tracks often revolved around themes of love, heartbreak, partying, individuality, friendship and standing up to bullies. While the lyrics and production divided opinion, the band’s audience connected strongly with their messages of self-expression and acceptance.

🌈 More Than Just Music

One of the reasons Blood on the Dance Floor attracted such a passionate fanbase was their emphasis on embracing individuality.

Many listeners were teenagers who felt isolated or misunderstood. The band’s colourful image and recurring themes of being yourself resonated with fans looking for a sense of community.

Their supporters—often referred to as the Blood Babies—became one of the internet’s most dedicated fan communities during the MySpace era. Fans travelled across the United States and beyond to attend concerts, purchase merchandise and meet the band.

Long before today’s influencer culture, Blood on the Dance Floor understood how to cultivate a loyal online following.

🌍 Touring Around the World

Throughout the early 2010s, the band toured extensively across North America, Europe and Australia.

Although mainstream festivals rarely embraced them, headline tours consistently attracted devoted audiences. Meet-and-greet sessions became a significant part of the fan experience, allowing supporters to interact directly with the band.

Their energetic live shows, complete with colourful costumes, dance routines and crowd interaction, helped cement their popularity during the height of the scene movement.

🎵 A Genre All of Their Own

Trying to categorise Blood on the Dance Floor has never been easy.

Their music drew inspiration from:

  • Electronic dance music
  • Crunkcore
  • Pop
  • Screamo
  • Metalcore
  • Hip-hop
  • Glam rock

The combination produced a style that was often chaotic but instantly recognisable.

While traditional rock critics frequently dismissed the band, fans appreciated their willingness to experiment rather than fit neatly into a single genre.

⚡ Critics vs Fans

Few bands generated such sharply divided opinions.

Critics regularly criticised the group’s use of Auto-Tune, simplistic songwriting and highly stylised image. Many reviews were overwhelmingly negative.

Yet commercial success told a different story.

Albums sold well within their niche audience, social media numbers continued to grow and concerts attracted enthusiastic crowds. The disconnect between critical reception and fan loyalty became one of the defining aspects of Blood on the Dance Floor’s career.

⚠️ Controversy Changes Everything

As the band’s profile grew, so too did controversy surrounding frontman Dahvie Vanity.

Beginning in the early 2010s, multiple women publicly accused him of sexual misconduct involving underage fans. The allegations received significant media attention over several years and prompted widespread discussion within the alternative music community.

Dahvie Vanity consistently denied the allegations.

Although he has not been criminally convicted in relation to those accusations, the allegations had far-reaching consequences for the band’s reputation. Promoters cancelled performances, collaborators distanced themselves, business relationships ended and many fans withdrew their support.

The controversy fundamentally changed public perception of Blood on the Dance Floor and has continued to shape discussions about the band ever since.

🎤 Jayy Von Monroe’s Departure

In 2016, Jayy Von Monroe officially left Blood on the Dance Floor.

The departure marked the end of what many considered the band’s defining era. Jayy later pursued solo projects, while BOTDF’s momentum continued to decline.

For many fans, Jayy’s exit symbolised the end of the Blood on the Dance Floor they had grown up with.

📉 The Decline

Following the extensive publicity surrounding the allegations, Blood on the Dance Floor’s popularity diminished significantly.

Streaming numbers fell, tours became increasingly rare and much of the alternative music community distanced itself from the project. Former collaborators publicly criticised Dahvie Vanity, while many venues and promoters chose not to work with the band.

Although attempts were made to continue releasing music, BOTDF never regained the prominence they enjoyed during the height of the MySpace era.

🎸 The Legacy

Blood on the Dance Floor remain one of the most controversial acts to emerge from the internet generation of music.

On one hand, they demonstrated the power of social media long before it became the standard route to success. They proved that independent artists could build enormous audiences without relying on traditional record labels, radio stations or television exposure.

Their colourful visual style influenced countless scene bands, content creators and fashion trends throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s. Many aspects of internet music promotion that are now considered commonplace were embraced by BOTDF years before they became industry standards.

On the other hand, discussions about the band’s legacy are now inseparable from the serious allegations surrounding Dahvie Vanity. For many former fans, those allegations overshadow any musical achievements the band may have had.

💿 Studio Discography

  • Let’s Start a Riot! (2008)
  • It’s Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World (2008)
  • Epic (2010)
  • All the Rage!! (2011)
  • Evolution (2012)
  • Bad Blood (2013)
  • Bitchcraft (2014)
  • Scissors (2016)

🤘 Final Thoughts

Blood on the Dance Floor’s story is one of the most dramatic in modern alternative music. They rose during the golden age of MySpace, cultivated an intensely loyal global fanbase and became one of the defining acts of the colourful “scene” era. Their DIY approach to online promotion showed how independent artists could reach millions without the backing of major labels, leaving a lasting mark on internet music culture.

At the same time, the band’s history serves as a reminder that success can be overshadowed by serious controversy. Today, Blood on the Dance Floor are remembered as much for the allegations that surrounded their frontman as for the music that first brought them fame.

Whether you remember them as pioneers of the MySpace generation or as one of alternative music’s most contentious acts, there’s no denying that Blood on the Dance Floor left a lasting—and deeply complicated—impression on the rock and alternative scene.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
