A long-standing Reigate live music venue says its future is under serious threat after being served with a noise abatement notice — and now the people behind The Cage are asking music fans to stand with them.

There are stories that make you sigh.

There are stories that make you angry.

And then there are stories that make every gig-going music fan want to shout:

“FOR THE LOVE OF RIFFS — NOT ANOTHER VENUE!” 🤘😡

The Cage, operated by Pilgrim Brewery in Reigate, says it is currently unable to host live music following the serving of a noise abatement notice.

For somewhere that has reportedly been putting on live music for 26 years, that isn’t just an inconvenience.

According to the venue, it could threaten its very survival.

And now a petition has been launched as The Cage prepares to fight the notice.

🎸 26 YEARS OF LIVE MUSIC

The Cage isn’t some brand-new nightclub that’s suddenly appeared between people’s houses blasting music until stupid o’clock.

According to Pilgrim Brewery, The Cage has been operating as a live music venue for 26 years and is also one of the main stages used during the Reigate Music Festival.

Live music is part of what the place does.

It’s part of its identity.

It’s part of the town’s musical community.

The venue says its licence permits outdoor music in its courtyard until 11pm, seven days a week.

However, Pilgrim Brewery says the reality is considerably more restrained.

During the summer, it says bands or DJs generally perform only once during a weekend, with midweek events being extremely rare.

The venue also says it has worked alongside police and licensing authorities to provide a safe environment for customers.

This isn’t just about entertainment, either.

Grassroots venues provide stages for bands, work for musicians, sound engineers and hospitality staff, and places where communities can actually gather instead of communicating entirely through bloody WhatsApp groups.

Once these spaces disappear, they’re incredibly difficult to replace.

🔊 THE COMPLAINT THAT STARTED THE DISPUTE

According to Pilgrim Brewery’s account, the situation began in May 2026, when it was contacted following a noise complaint from a person who had recently moved into Reigate town centre.

Pilgrim Brewery says there has been one complainant involved in the dispute.

Adrian from Pilgrim Brewery says the complainant told them:

“Reigate’s community is one of the reasons why we opted to live in the area.”

The brewery says the resident explained that noise from the venue was affecting him and his family.

Whatever your feelings about somebody moving near an established music venue, residents are entitled to raise concerns about noise.

But what happened next is important.

Because Pilgrim Brewery says it didn’t simply ignore the complaint and crank the PA another three notches.

Quite the opposite.

🤝 THE CAGE SAYS IT TRIED TO COMPROMISE

According to the venue, once it became aware of the complaint, it voluntarily began ending music earlier, at approximately 10:30pm rather than using the full 11pm allowance it says its licence provides.

The venue also says it worked with bands and DJs to reduce volume levels.

That’s an important part of this story.

The Cage’s position is that it recognised there was an issue and attempted to find a compromise allowing residents and an established live music venue to coexist.

Because surely that should be the goal?

Not residents versus venues.

Not venues versus councils.

Not musicians versus neighbours.

Coexistence.

Town centres are living places. They contain homes, shops, pubs, restaurants, businesses and entertainment venues.

Finding the balance isn’t always easy.

But shutting down live music should surely be the absolute last resort.

📄 THEN CAME THE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH CORRESPONDENCE

Pilgrim Brewery says it had been communicating regularly with Environmental Health regarding the situation.

According to the brewery, it received a letter dated 16 July recommending that the venue:

“review the volume of the music and frequency of events to prevent any future potential nuisance arising”

From The Cage’s perspective, it believed those issues had already been addressed.

Events were relatively infrequent.

Music was finishing earlier.

Volume levels had been reduced.

Then, according to Pilgrim Brewery, another email arrived on 23 July, stating:

“It is appreciated that these measures have been implemented voluntarily to try and minimise the impact on nearby residents.”

Based on those communications, the venue says it believed its efforts were being recognised.

Then came 5 August.

And everything changed.

🚨 THE NOISE ABATEMENT NOTICE

Pilgrim Brewery says receiving the noise abatement notice on 5 August came as a major shock.

The brewery claims it had not previously been warned that such a notice was about to be served.

More importantly, The Cage says it is struggling to understand exactly what it must do to comply.

The notice, as quoted by Pilgrim Brewery, states:

“No statutory noise nuisance shall be caused to the occupiers of any residential premises by music or entertainment noise, whether live or recorded, amplified or unamplified, or by the use of any amplification or sound reproduction equipment.”

And that’s where things become complicated.

The venue wants clarity.

What level constitutes a statutory noise nuisance?

Could The Cage hold an acoustic performance?

Could it stage quieter gigs?

Would one show per month be acceptable?

Could events continue if sound levels remained beneath an agreed limit?

According to the venue, the notice doesn’t provide the practical answers it needs.

And when breaching an abatement notice can carry serious legal consequences, you can understand why the people running the venue aren’t prepared to simply guess.

As a result, The Cage says it currently appears unable to host live music until further notice.

💔 “WITHOUT LIVE MUSIC THE CAGE WILL NOT SURVIVE”

This is the bit that should worry every grassroots music fan.

Pilgrim Brewery says:

“It is an absolute certainty that without live music the Cage will not survive as a hospitality venue.”

That’s massive.

The venue says its busy summer period helps generate the income required to sustain the business through the quieter winter months.

Remove the gigs.

Remove the crowds.

Remove the drinks being bought before and after bands.

Eventually, you risk removing the venue altogether.

And we’ve watched this film far too many bloody times.

Across Britain, grassroots venues have faced an exhausting mixture of rising operating costs, redevelopment, rent pressures, changing nightlife habits and noise disputes.

Every closure leaves another hole in the touring circuit.

One fewer stage for the teenager playing their first gig.

One fewer room where tomorrow’s festival band can learn its craft.

One fewer place where somebody can accidentally discover their new favourite band while wandering in for a pint.

You don’t manufacture music scenes.

You give them places to exist.

⚖️ THE CAGE PLANS TO FIGHT THE NOTICE

Pilgrim Brewery says it has now sought legal advice and believes its route forward is to appeal the notice.

That, unsurprisingly, isn’t going to be cheap.

The venue says it expects to require the services of a specialist Noise Nuisance Barrister and therefore plans to launch a fundraising page to help cover the legal costs.

Details of that fundraising campaign are expected to follow.

In the meantime, The Cage is asking supporters to sign its petition.

✍️ SIGN THE PETITION

If you believe long-established grassroots music venues deserve the opportunity to work constructively with councils and communities to resolve noise disputes rather than losing live music altogether, you can add your name to The Cage’s petition.

👉 SIGN THE PETITION HERE:

https://c.org/TvW4v6x7FR

Whether you’re from Reigate or you’re reading this from a rainy festival field somewhere in Wales with a pint in one hand and absolutely no idea where your tent is, stories like this matter.

Because grassroots venues aren’t somebody else’s problem.

They’re our music ecosystem.

🎤 THE RIFF REPORT VIEW

Let’s be clear about something.

Residents have rights.

People should be able to enjoy their homes, and legitimate noise concerns shouldn’t simply be dismissed because somebody loves live music.

But established venues matter too.

And when a venue says it has operated for 26 years, holds an appropriate music licence, has voluntarily shortened performance times and attempted to reduce volume levels, it deserves a clear pathway towards resolving the problem.

There has to be room for sensible compromise.

Better soundproofing.

Agreed sound levels.

Monitoring.

Earlier finishing times.

Changes to speaker positioning.

Restrictions on frequency.

Whatever practical measures experts determine are appropriate.

Because the alternative — another grassroots venue going silent — benefits absolutely nobody who cares about Britain’s live music culture.

The Riff Report will be watching this one closely.

Hopefully the next chapter involves bands plugging back in, amps warming up and somebody shouting:

“ONE MORE SONG!”

Rather than another British music venue joining the depressingly long list of places where the stage lights went out for good.

🤘 SUPPORT THE CAGE

Sign the petition. Share the story. Support grassroots venues.

And if you’re local to Reigate, support the independent businesses and music spaces that help give the town its character.

Because once a grassroots venue disappears…

getting it back is a hell of a lot harder than turning the volume down.

🎸 SAVE THE CAGE. SAVE GRASSROOTS MUSIC. 🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
