The Riff Reportโs Loud, Tired & Slightly Delirious Guide to Escaping Brum After a Gig
Youโve moshed. Youโve cried. Youโve sang your heart out to Ozzy, Green Day, or Liam Gallagher (depending on your vibe). Youโve dodged crowd surfers, spilled beer, and someoneโs inflatable flamingo. Now itโs time for the real challenge…
Getting the hell out of Birmingham New Street Station.
Welcome to the unofficial, unhinged, and unapologetically chaotic survival guide for getting home from Brumโs busiest station โ where every platform is a gamble, every escalator a battleground, and every voice on the tannoy is lying to you. ๐
๐ธ STEP 1: Donโt Trust The Timetable โ It Lies
Letโs get one thing straight: train times are more of a vague suggestion than a promise.
Sure, it says your train to Cardiff is at 22:47. But waitโฆ the screen just changed. Now itโs at 22:52 from Platform 11bโฆ which may or may not exist in this dimension.
Tidy tip from The Riff Report:
๐ฑ Download the National Rail app, but keep one eye on the boards. And one eye on the crowd. And one eye on the Greggs queue. (Yes, thatโs three eyes. Youโll grow them from stress.)
๐ฑ STEP 2: Dodge the Post-Gig Stampede
Youโre not alone. Oh no. Youโre now part of a human tsunami โ metalheads, dads in Oasis shirts, TikTok teens, and someone in a pink cowboy hat whoโs definitely lost their mates and their phone.
This crowd moves in chaotic waves. If you stop to tie your shoelace, you may never be seen again.
Pro tips:
- Use the Stephenson Street or Hill Street entrances to avoid the Grand Central crush.
- Stagger your exit. Hit a bar or grab chips and gravy while the main flood passes.
- If someone yells โWetherspoons!โ โ FOLLOW THEM. They have a plan and it involves lager.
๐ฅ STEP 3: Emergency Snack Run
This isnโt just a train ride. This is a spiritual trial. Youโll need supplies.
Whether itโs a sausage roll of salvation or a bottle of Lucozade that cost more than your train ticket, fuel up like youโre heading into the apocalypse.
Snack Saviours:
- Greggs (Main Concourse) โ Always a hero.
- Sainsburyโs (Grand Central) โ Reasonable(ish).
- Tesco Express upstairs โ For emergency crisps and rage Snickers.
- Five Guys (if you’re minted) โ For the rich and the reckless.
- Vending machines โ If you hate yourself and enjoy ยฃ4 KitKats.
๐งญ STEP 4: Platform Mayhem & Mind Games
Your train is called. The crowd roars. Half are charging to Platform 8b, half are spinning in confusion. Someoneโs already dropped their McDonaldโs.
This is Hunger Games meets Monopoly Travel Edition.
- Get to the far end of the platform. Itโs usually quieter and gives you a seat-finding edge.
- Donโt trust the nice old lady by the screen โ sheโs guarding the one plug socket.
- Avoid Platform 12. Itโs cursed. We donโt talk about Platform 12.
๐ช STEP 5: Get That Seat (Or Prepare To Floor It)
Itโs seat warfare. You either move fast or get stuck sitting next to the toilets listening to someone eat Monster Munch with their mouth open for 90 minutes.
Seat Hacks:
- Throw your coat or bag down before youโve even sat. Claim it like itโs Glastonbury turf.
- Donโt hesitate. Politeness is weakness.
- First Class? If itโs unguarded and the trainโs packedโฆ you saw nothing.
๐ง STEP 6: The Entertainment Begins…
You thought the gig was the show? Nah mate. The real performance is on the train.
Welcome to:
- Drunken Karaoke Carriageโข โ starring three blokes and a speaker.
- Crying Girl Corner โ tragic love story unfolding in real time.
- โI Missed My Stopโ Madness โ now featuring angry dads and rerouted dreams.
๐ง Noise-cancelling headphones are your best friend. Or just join in. Sing Wonderwall badly and proudly. Youโve earned it.
๐ด STEP 7: Sleep At Your Own Risk
Sleep on a train? Brave. Bold. Possibly foolish.
If you must nap:
- Set an alarm for 5 mins before your stop.
- Clutch your bag like itโs your lifeline.
- Write your stop on a piece of paper and stick it to your forehead.
Falling asleep on the train out of Birmingham is how you end up in Stafford at 2am Googling โhow to build a shelter out of railcards.โ
๐จ EMERGENCY BACKUP PLAN
Missed your train? Still in New Street at 1am with a phone on 3%?
Hereโs what to do:
- Megabus โ ยฃ4 to anywhere if you can find the stop and stomach the ride.
- Premier Inn panic check-in โ expensive, but at least thereโs a bed.
- Uber with strangers you trust from the queue โ good luck, soldier.
- Sleep near the escalators in Grand Central โ find a plug, adopt the feral lifestyle.
Only in Birmingham, munโฆ
๐ฅ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Surviving Birmingham New Street after a gig isnโt for the weak. Itโs for the bold. The fast. The snack-prepped.
Youโve conquered delays, dodged stag dos, and possibly cried into a Double Decker. But you made it. Youโre going home โ with ringing ears, a sore neck, and a heart full of live music glory. ๐ถโค๏ธ
Diolch and proper job, butt. You did Brum proud. ๐ค๐ค
