A special 40th Remembrance Day honouring late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton will take place in Sweden on Saturday 26 September 2026, bringing fans together for a full day and night of music, memories, special guests and a tribute to one of heavy metal’s most beloved musicians.

This one is going to hit hard.

Four decades after the tragic death of Cliff Burton, fans will gather at the Cliff Burton Museum Laganland and Garvaren Nöje in Ljungby, Sweden, for a major remembrance event dedicated to keeping his legacy alive.

The date carries enormous significance.

Cliff died on 27 September 1986 following a tour bus accident in Sweden while Metallica were on the road supporting Master Of Puppets.

Forty years later, the remembrance event will bring together musicians, speakers, fans and members of the wider metal community to celebrate the life, music and influence of a bassist who helped redefine what the instrument could do in heavy metal.

🎸 A Full Day Dedicated To Cliff Burton

The daytime programme takes place at the Cliff Burton Museum Laganland from 11:00 until 17:00.

Fans can expect live music, special guests, lectures and free museum admission as part of the event.

Food and drink will also be available to purchase, and importantly, the daytime section has no age limit.

The programme begins at 11:00 before a series of guests and performances carry the event through the afternoon.

☀️ Cliff Burton 40th Remembrance Day – Day Programme

The daytime schedule is:

11:00 – Remembrance Day begins

11:30 – John Cruz

12:30 – Joel McIver

13:30 – Internationallica – Live

14:30 – Mike Overton of Trauma

15:30 – Bloodstain – Live

17:00 – Day programme ends

That lineup alone gives the day a strong mixture of storytelling and live music.

Author and journalist Joel McIver has written extensively about Metallica and heavy music, while Mike Overton of Trauma represents a particularly important connection to Burton’s pre-Metallica history.

Before joining Metallica, Cliff played with Trauma, making Overton’s appearance especially fitting for a remembrance event focused on the man behind the legend.

🎥 The Evening Programme Gets Even Bigger

Once the daytime programme finishes, attention shifts to Garvaren Nöje Ljungby for the evening event.

Doors open at 20:00, with proceedings running right through until 02:00.

And there’s plenty happening.

The evening combines film, live music and a very special concert built around one of the most important nights in Metallica history.

🌙 Cliff Burton Remembrance – Evening Programme

The evening schedule is:

20:00 – Doors open / evening begins

20:15 – Adam Dubin film screening

22:00 – METAHOLICA – Solnahallen set

00:30 – PocoLoco / METZ Jam Session with secret artists

02:00 – Doors close

The evening carries an age limit of 15+, with 18+ required at the bar.

🎬 Murder In The Front Row Screening

At 20:15, fans will be treated to a screening presented by filmmaker Adam Dubin.

The film is Murder In The Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Story.

For anyone interested in the history of Metallica, Exodus, Testament and the wider Bay Area thrash movement, this is essential viewing.

The documentary dives into the scene that helped give birth to some of the biggest and most important bands in metal history.

And naturally, Cliff Burton’s connection to that era makes it a perfect fit for the remembrance weekend.

🔥 METAHOLICA To Recreate Metallica’s Final Show With Cliff

Then comes the part likely to leave more than a few people emotional.

At 22:00, METAHOLICA will perform Metallica’s entire Solnahallen set from 26 September 1986.

That concert took place in Stockholm just one day before Cliff Burton’s death.

It was the final show he ever played with Metallica.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The tribute will therefore recreate the set from Cliff’s final concert exactly 40 years later to the day.

That is an incredibly powerful idea.

It transforms the show from a standard tribute performance into something much more meaningful.

For longtime Metallica fans, it will be a chance to remember Cliff through the music he helped make legendary.

🎶 One Final Jam Session

The night will continue at 00:30 with a jam session featuring PocoLoco / METZ alongside secret artists.

And that feels like the perfect way to round things off.

Cliff Burton was a musician first and foremost.

A bassist who loved heavy music, classical music and unusual ideas.

A player who brought creativity and personality into a genre that could easily have treated bass as little more than background noise.

Ending the night with musicians getting together and simply playing feels wonderfully appropriate.

💰 Ticket Prices

Tickets are available separately for the daytime and evening programmes, or as a combined package.

Laganland Day Programme, 11:00–17:00: 395 SEK plus service fee

Garvaren Evening Programme, 20:00–02:00: 295 SEK plus service fee

Day & Evening Combined Ticket: 595 SEK plus service fee

It’s a substantial programme for the price, particularly given the historical importance of the anniversary.

🖤 Why Sweden Matters So Much To Cliff Burton’s Story

Holding the event in Sweden carries an emotional weight that doesn’t need much explanation.

Cliff Burton died there in 1986 while Metallica were touring Europe.

The tragedy permanently changed the band.

Metallica continued with Jason Newsted, eventually becoming one of the biggest musical acts on Earth.

But Cliff’s presence never disappeared.

His name remained part of the band’s history.

His performances remained part of the records.

And generations of bass players continued discovering just how outrageously inventive he had been.

Sweden therefore occupies a painful but significant place in the Burton story.

The existence of a museum and annual remembrance activities in the country shows just how strongly his legacy still resonates there.

🎸 Cliff Burton Changed Metal Bass Forever

Cliff wasn’t simply “the bassist in early Metallica”.

That description completely undersells what he brought to the band.

His playing on Kill ’Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets helped establish a completely different expectation for bass guitar in heavy metal.

He wasn’t interested in hiding behind the guitars.

He used distortion.

Melody.

Harmonics.

Lead playing.

Classical influences.

And a tone that could sound absolutely enormous.

Just listen to Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth).

A bass solo on a debut thrash-metal album shouldn’t have worked that brilliantly.

But Cliff made it sound inevitable.

⚡ ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ Still Belongs To Cliff

Few introductions in metal are as instantly recognisable as the opening of For Whom The Bell Tolls.

And plenty of casual listeners still assume that sound is a guitar.

Nope.

That’s Cliff.

His distorted bass tone became one of the defining sounds of Metallica’s early period.

Then there’s Orion, where his melodic playing helped create one of the most beautiful instrumental pieces in the band’s catalogue.

Cliff could be aggressive.

But he could also be incredibly musical.

That balance made him special.

🤘 His Influence Is Still Everywhere

Bassists across rock and metal continue citing Burton as an influence four decades after his death.

Some players were alive when those records first appeared.

Others were born decades later.

That’s the remarkable part.

Cliff’s career with Metallica was tragically short.

But the impact has been enormous.

He helped shape three records that remain cornerstones of heavy metal.

And those records continue producing new musicians every year.

Not many people achieve that.

🖤 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

This doesn’t feel like just another anniversary event.

The Cliff Burton 40th Remembrance Day carries real emotional weight.

The location matters.

The date matters.

The people appearing matter.

And the decision to recreate Metallica’s final 1986 show with Cliff exactly forty years later feels especially powerful.

There will be sadness.

There will be stories.

There will be riffs.

And there will almost certainly be a room full of people remembering exactly why Cliff Burton still means so much to heavy metal.

The message on the event poster sums it up perfectly:

Come together and keep the legacy alive.

Forty years later, that legacy is still roaring.

Rest in power, Cliff Burton. 🖤⚡🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
