Glitter, miming crimes, and enough second-hand cringe to power the National Grid.

There was a time — kids, gather round — when Thursday night telly meant one thing and one thing only: Top of the Pops.
The charts. The lights. The awkward dancing teenagers. And, most importantly, artists being forced to mime like their lives depended on it.

For some, it was a launchpad to legend status.
For others… it was a televised car crash that lives forever on YouTube, haunting them like an unpaid TV licence.

So grab a warm can, sit yourself down, and let The Riff Report guide you through ten moments of pure, unfiltered, British musical embarrassment. Cringe responsibly, mun. 🤘😬

🔟 Nirvana – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1991)

Nirvana were never going to play ball with the BBC’s miming rules. Kurt Cobain sang in a mock baritone like he was auditioning for a vampire radio play, Krist Novoselic looked lost, and Dave Grohl absolutely launched himself at the drums out of sheer spite.

It was rebellion through sarcasm.
It was iconic.
It was also deeply awkward for anyone expecting a normal performance.

Grunge vs British politeness. Grunge won.

9️⃣ Sham 69 – “If the Kids Are United” (1978)

When the BBC booked Sham 69, they thought they were getting a nice bit of punk flavour. What they got was crowd chaos, stage invasions, and producers having full-blown panic attacks behind the cameras.

Security? Overrun.
Control? Lost.
Tea? Spilled.

A moment that proved punk simply did not belong on polite primetime telly — and didn’t care one bit.

8️⃣ Bros – “When Will I Be Famous?” (1988)

Matching denim. Wind machines on full blast. Facial expressions that scream “we’ve just discovered fame and hairspray at the same time.”

Bros weren’t terrible — they were just too 1988 to survive the modern eye. Watching this now feels like opening a time capsule filled with gel, hope, and mild regret.

7️⃣ Oasis – “Wonderwall” (1995)

Liam Gallagher refused to mime properly, Noel ended up singing, and the rest of the band looked like they’d rather be literally anywhere else.

It was petty.
It was awkward.
It was the most Oasis thing imaginable.

Britpop royalty, acting like kids sent to the headteacher’s office — live on national television.

6️⃣ Dexys Midnight Runners – “Come On Eileen” (1982)

Dungarees. A fiddle. Kevin Rowland staring down the camera like he knows your darkest secret.

This one sits in that dangerous space between charmingly odd and deeply unsettling. A cultural milestone? Absolutely. Comfortable viewing? Not a chance.

5️⃣ Iron Maiden – “Running Free” (1980)

Metal hitting Top of the Pops in 1980 was like unleashing a dragon in a WI meeting.
The band were fired up. The audience clapped politely like they were watching Morris dancing.

Two worlds collided. Neither knew how to react.

Legendary band. Legendary mismatch.

4️⃣ David Bowie – “Ashes to Ashes” (1980)

Bowie arrived dressed as a Pierrot clown and delivered surreal art-pop while the nation quietly wondered if they were still watching the same programme.

This wasn’t embarrassing for Bowie — it was embarrassing for Top of the Pops trying to contain someone operating several dimensions ahead of everyone else.

High art, low comfort levels.

3️⃣ The KLF – “3 a.m. Eternal” (1991)

Industrial shouting. Aggressive vibes. A performance that felt like an art prank disguised as a chart hit.

Viewers were confused. Producers were sweating. Somewhere, a camera operator questioned all their life choices.

Pure chaos. Pure discomfort. Pure KLF.

2️⃣ Milli Vanilli – “Girl You Know It’s True” (1989)

Miming was standard practice on Top of the Pops.
Miming when you weren’t even the real singers was… something else entirely.

With hindsight, this performance is pop’s version of a horror film — all smiles, all confidence, and a truth waiting to explode.

🥇 1️⃣ The Smiths – “This Charming Man” (1983)

Morrissey waves gladioli around like he’s hosting a gothic garden centre opening. Johnny Marr looks deeply uncomfortable. Britain watches in baffled silence.

It’s iconic.
It’s influential.
It’s almost impossible to watch without wincing.

The undisputed champion of Top of the Pops cringe, mun. 👑🌸

📀 THE RIFF REPORT FINAL WORD 🤘

Top of the Pops wasn’t just a music show — it was a weekly cultural experiment where art, rebellion, ego, and BBC rules smashed into each other under blinding studio lights. Sometimes it created legends. Sometimes it created moments people would rather forget.

And that, honestly, is exactly why we still love it.

Long live the cringe.

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
