Same name. Same songs. Absolutely nobody from day one. Welcome to the wonderfully confusing world of progressive rock. 🤘🌀

Prog rock has never exactly been famous for keeping things simple.

Why write a three-minute song when you can make it 23 minutes long, throw in four time-signature changes, a Mellotron solo, lyrics about interdimensional wizards and an album sleeve that requires its own instruction manual?

And apparently, that philosophy extends to band line-ups too.

Some of progressive rock’s biggest names have been around for more than half a century, surviving departures, reunions, arguments, deaths, retirements and enough personnel changes to make Fleetwood Mac look organised.

In several extraordinary cases, the band has survived every single founding member.

Not one remains.

Yet the albums keep coming, the tours keep rolling and thousands of fans continue turning up.

So grab your cape, dust off the Moog and prepare for the ultimate musical Ship of Theseus debate.

Here are five classic prog bands still carrying the name despite having no original members left.

🎸 1. YES

This is probably the biggest example of the lot.

Yes formed in London in 1968, with the original line-up built around:

  • Jon Anderson – vocals
  • Chris Squire – bass
  • Peter Banks – guitar
  • Tony Kaye – keyboards
  • Bill Bruford – drums

That combination didn’t last particularly long — something that would become a recurring theme throughout Yes history.

Peter Banks departed in 1970 and was replaced by Steve Howe, while Rick Wakeman later replaced Tony Kaye.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Because when most rock fans picture “classic Yes”, they’re probably imagining musicians like Anderson, Squire, Howe, Wakeman and Bruford.

But Steve Howe wasn’t actually an original member.

Neither was Rick Wakeman.

Yes became one of progressive rock’s defining forces through records including The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer, creating music so gloriously ambitious that occasionally you could put the kettle on halfway through a song and return before the guitar solo had finished.

Then came decades of line-up changes.

Bruford left. Anderson eventually departed. Kaye came and went. Different generations of musicians passed through the Yes machine.

The final founding member still involved was legendary bassist Chris Squire, who remained part of Yes from their formation until his death in 2015.

His passing meant something remarkable had happened:

Yes officially had no original members left. (Wikipedia)

Yet Yes continued.

Steve Howe remains the crucial historical connection, having originally joined way back in 1970, while Geoff Downes first appeared with the band during the Drama era in 1980.

So is it still Yes?

That’s the pub argument capable of lasting longer than Tales from Topographic Oceans.

🍺 Riff Report verdict: If you’ve spent more than half a century playing in the band, we’re probably not going to demand Steve Howe hand back his Yes membership card.

🍄 2. GONG

If any band was going to transcend the mortal limitations of its original membership, of course it was bloody Gong.

Because Gong have never really behaved like a normal band anyway.

Founded by former Soft Machine guitarist Daevid Allen in the late 1960s, Gong became one of the strangest, funniest and most wonderfully psychedelic institutions in progressive music.

We’re talking:

🛸 Flying teapots
🍄 Pot Head Pixies
🌌 Cosmic mythology
🎷 Jazz-rock freakouts
🎸 Psychedelic space jams

Basically, imagine somebody discovering prog rock after eating something suspicious at Glastonbury.

That’s Gong.

Their sprawling musical mythology and albums including Flying Teapot, Angel’s Egg and You established a cult following that continues generations later.

But Gong’s line-up has always been fluid.

Very fluid.

Dozens of musicians have travelled through the Gong universe over the decades, including Steve Hillage, Pierre Moerlen, Didier Malherbe and Tim Blake.

Eventually even Daevid Allen stepped away from the earthly plane.

Allen died in 2015, but crucially, Gong didn’t simply carry on without their founder against his wishes.

The modern incarnation had effectively been given Allen’s blessing to continue the adventure.

Today’s Gong contains no original members, yet the band remains active and continues releasing new music; their 2026 album Bright Spirit extended the story once again. (RAMzine)

And somehow, with Gong, that feels completely appropriate.

Gong was never merely five blokes standing in a rehearsal room.

It was an idea.

A universe.

A musical collective.

A particularly weird teapot.

🍄 Riff Report verdict: Daevid Allen would probably find the whole concept hilarious. Long live Planet Gong.

🎷 3. SOFT MACHINE

Now we’re entering Canterbury Scene territory, so somebody fetch the jazz chords.

Formed in 1966, Soft Machine’s first line-up featured:

  • Robert Wyatt
  • Mike Ratledge
  • Kevin Ayers
  • Daevid Allen

Yes — that Daevid Allen.

Prog family trees are basically impossible to draw without running out of paper.

Soft Machine became hugely influential through their fusion of psychedelic rock, jazz, avant-garde experimentation and progressive music.

Albums such as Third helped establish them as pioneers of British jazz-rock.

But even during their most celebrated era, the original line-up had already started disappearing.

Allen departed extremely early.

Kevin Ayers left.

Robert Wyatt departed in 1971.

Eventually keyboardist Mike Ratledge became the final remaining original member.

Then Ratledge left in 1976.

At that point, Soft Machine officially contained zero founding members. (Apple Music – Web Player)

And what did they do?

Carry on, obviously.

Because prog.

The band continued evolving through jazz fusion and various incarnations, while later related projects eventually helped revive the Soft Machine name.

Today the group still represents that extraordinary Canterbury musical lineage despite nobody from the original 1966 line-up remaining.

Guitarist John Etheridge, for example, originally joined Soft Machine in 1975 — meaning there’s still a genuine connection stretching back more than half a century.

That’s not some tribute act assembled last Tuesday.

That’s musical genealogy.

🎷 Riff Report verdict: Soft Machine might be the ultimate example of a band becoming an institution rather than simply a collection of individual musicians.

🎹 4. TANGERINE DREAM

Time for approximately 74 synthesisers.

German electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream were formed in Berlin in 1967 by Edgar Froese.

And if you’ve ever enjoyed ambient electronic music, synth-driven film scores, spacey prog or music that sounds like you’re slowly approaching Saturn at 3am, you owe these lot a pint.

Their enormously influential catalogue includes albums such as:

  • Phaedra
  • Rubycon
  • Stratosfear
  • Force Majeure

Their classic 1970s period helped transform electronic music, while Tangerine Dream would later become prolific soundtrack composers.

Through virtually every mutation of the group, Edgar Froese remained the constant.

Members arrived.

Members departed.

Synthesisers presumably multiplied overnight when nobody was looking.

But Froese remained.

Until his death in 2015.

With Froese gone, Tangerine Dream had officially lost its final original member. The band nevertheless continued under Thorsten Quaeschning, who had worked alongside Froese for years before his death. (Now Spinning Magazine)

And rather than becoming a nostalgia machine endlessly recycling Phaedra, the modern Tangerine Dream has continued creating and improvising new music.

That’s important.

This isn’t merely preservation.

It’s continuation.

🎹 Riff Report verdict: Tangerine Dream isn’t so much a band as a musical spaceship. The original crew might be gone, but somebody is still flying the bloody thing.

🌹 5. RENAISSANCE

Here’s perhaps the strangest personnel transformation on the entire list.

Because Renaissance managed to lose every original member ridiculously early.

The band was founded in 1969 by former Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, alongside Jane Relf, John Hawken and Louis Cennamo.

Their original sound mixed classical influences with folk and progressive rock.

But then the personnel carousel started spinning.

And it didn’t stop.

By the time Renaissance reached their third studio album, Prologue, released in 1972, the original line-up had completely disappeared. (Grunge)

Every.

Single.

Member.

Gone.

Yet rather than killing the band, that complete transformation helped produce the version of Renaissance that many fans now consider definitive.

The new era featured the extraordinary voice of Annie Haslam, alongside musicians including Michael Dunford, John Tout, Jon Camp and Terry Sullivan.

That incarnation produced acclaimed albums such as:

🎵 Ashes Are Burning
🎵 Turn of the Cards
🎵 Scheherazade and Other Stories
🎵 Novella

It’s a brilliant reminder that “original” doesn’t automatically mean “definitive”.

Sometimes a band’s most famous identity develops after the founders have already left the building.

🌹 Riff Report verdict: Renaissance replaced literally everybody and somehow became even more recognisably Renaissance. That’s peak prog behaviour.

🤔 When Does a Band Stop Being the Same Band?

And here’s the massive question.

If every original member has gone…

Is it still the same band?

It’s basically the Ship of Theseus, except the ship contains a double-neck guitar and somebody dressed like a wizard.

Replace the guitarist.

Then the drummer.

Then the singer.

Then the bassist.

Then the keyboard player.

Eventually none of the people who started the band remain.

So what actually defines the band?

The name?

The songs?

The musicians?

The approval of previous members?

Or simply whether the audience still believes in it?

There’s probably no universal answer.

With Yes, Steve Howe has been associated with the band since 1970, despite technically not being a founder.

With Soft Machine, John Etheridge’s history stretches back to the mid-’70s.

With Gong, continuation was part of Daevid Allen’s vision.

And with Tangerine Dream, musicians who worked directly alongside Edgar Froese have continued developing the music rather than merely recreating it. (The Guardian)

Those connections matter.

There’s a huge difference between a musical lineage naturally evolving over decades and somebody buying a trademark, finding four musicians on Facebook Marketplace and announcing a world tour.

🤘 Maybe Prog Bands Were Built for This

There’s also something wonderfully appropriate about progressive rock bands surviving their creators.

Prog was always supposed to progress.

Change.

Experiment.

Mutate.

Ignore the rulebook.

These bands were never designed to remain frozen in 1972 forever.

And maybe that’s exactly why names like Yes, Gong, Soft Machine and Tangerine Dream have survived extraordinary amounts of personnel upheaval.

The musicians changed.

The world changed.

The technology changed.

But the music kept moving.

And really, that’s about as prog as it gets.

So next time somebody tells you:

“That’s not the real band — none of the original members are left!”

You can confidently respond:

“Mate, we’re talking about prog rock. Half the original members had already left before Side Two.”

😂🤘

🎸 OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

Where do YOU stand?

Would you pay to see a legendary band with no founding members left, or does there need to be at least one original musician onstage for you to consider it authentic?

And which band carries its legacy best?

Yes? Gong? Soft Machine? Tangerine Dream? Renaissance?

Get the debate going, butt. 🍺🔥

Because somewhere out there, another prog musician has just left a band halfway through reading this article.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
