When you put two legendary progressive-rock guitarists in the same room, there are several possible outcomes.

Option one: beautiful music.

Option two: a 17-minute solo featuring approximately 94,000 notes.

Option three: both guitarists gradually turn their amplifiers up until somebody from three streets away phones the council.

Thankfully, when Steve Hackett and Steve Rothery joined forces, they had something rather more important than guitar heroics on their side:

Friendship. 🤘❤️

The former Genesis guitarist and the Marillion six-string maestro approached working together without any desire to turn proceedings into some ridiculous battle of technique, speed or musical one-upmanship.

As Rothery neatly put it:

“When you’re friends first and the music comes later, you know it’s non-competitive.”

And that philosophy raises a wonderfully simple question:

Can two guitarists with enormous reputations actually share the same musical space without disappearing into a duel of overplaying egos?

The answer appears to be a very satisfying YES.

🎸 TWO VERY DIFFERENT GUITAR LEGENDS

Part of what makes the combination so fascinating is that Hackett and Rothery don’t sound identical.

Far from it.

Steve Hackett helped reshape progressive-rock guitar during his years with Genesis, bringing classical influences, experimentation, atmosphere and innovative techniques into some of the band’s most celebrated music.

His work across albums including Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway helped establish a guitar vocabulary that generations of musicians would subsequently explore.

Then you’ve got Steve Rothery.

As a founding member of Marillion, Rothery became famous for an altogether wonderfully expressive approach.

Rather than throwing every note available at the listener, Rothery has built a career around melody, sustain, atmosphere and — most importantly — knowing when not to play.

Stick on a great Rothery solo and you’ll immediately understand.

Sometimes one perfectly chosen note can flatten you harder than somebody shredding across the entire fretboard like their fingers are being chased by wasps.

🔥🎸

🤝 FRIENDSHIP BEFORE FRETBOARDS

That’s where the relationship between Hackett and Rothery becomes particularly interesting.

They weren’t approaching one another as competitors.

There was no:

“Right Steve, show us what you’ve got.”

Followed by:

“Oh yeah? Watch THIS.”

Cue 28-minute sweep-picking extravaganza.

Instead, their friendship created an environment where both musicians could actually listen to each other.

That sounds incredibly obvious, but when you’ve got two players with decades of experience, recognisable styles and serious reputations sharing a recording, there could easily be temptation to cram every available space with guitar.

Hackett and Rothery went the opposite direction.

They gave each other room.

And that, butt, is where things get interesting.

🎶 SERVING THE MUSIC RATHER THAN THE EGO

There’s something beautifully old-school about musicians who don’t feel the need to demonstrate everything they can do every five seconds.

Both Hackett and Rothery are perfectly capable of producing technically impressive guitar work.

Nobody needs convincing of that.

Their CVs settled that argument decades ago.

So instead of treating collaboration like an audition, the pair could concentrate on something considerably more important:

Does this actually make the song better?

That’s the difference between playing guitar and making music.

And it’s one of the reasons both musicians remain so highly respected.

Technical ability is brilliant.

Speed is brilliant.

Complexity can be brilliant.

But if the bloke next to you is playing something gorgeous, sometimes the greatest contribution you can make is simply giving it enough room to breathe.

🎸🔥 THE ANTI-GUITAR DUEL

Rock history has always loved the idea of the guitar duel.

Two players trading solos.

One goes faster.

The other goes higher.

Somebody bends a note into another postcode.

Eventually everybody’s hair catches fire and Guitar World produces a 14-page feature about it.

Lovely stuff.

But Hackett and Rothery demonstrate another possibility.

Two distinctive guitar voices don’t have to fight for attention.

They can have a conversation.

One player introduces an idea.

The other answers it.

One creates texture while the other carries melody.

Then the roles can reverse.

It’s less:

🥊 HACKETT VS ROTHERY

and more:

🍺 HACKETT & ROTHERY — fancy making something interesting?

And we’d take the second option every time.

🧙‍♂️ PROG ROCK DOESN’T NEED TO BE A TECHNICAL ARMS RACE

There’s another reason their approach feels refreshing.

Progressive rock occasionally gets stereotyped as musicians showing other musicians how many unusual time signatures they know.

Seven-minute keyboard solo?

Lovely.

Bass line requiring seventeen fingers?

Get it in there.

Song written in 13/8 about an interdimensional wizard?

PROG!

😂🤘

But the greatest progressive music has always balanced musicianship with emotion.

Genesis understood it.

Marillion understand it.

Hackett understands it.

Rothery understands it.

Technique should be another colour available to the musician — not the entire painting.

And when two musicians who understand that philosophy work together, you don’t necessarily get twice as many notes.

You potentially get twice as many ideas.

That’s much more exciting.

❤️ FRIENDSHIP CHANGES EVERYTHING

Rothery’s comment about friendship might actually explain the whole thing.

When respect already exists before anybody plugs a guitar into an amplifier, there’s far less need to establish hierarchy.

Nobody has to prove they’re the star.

Nobody needs the final solo.

Nobody has to turn themselves up another 3dB when the engineer isn’t looking.

You simply make music with somebody whose instincts you trust.

And after decades spent working at the highest level, Hackett and Rothery have surely earned the right to leave competitive guitar gymnastics to somebody else.

They’ve already proved themselves.

Several thousand times over.

🤘 SO… DID THE EXPERIMENT WORK?

If the objective was proving that two celebrated guitarists can occupy the same musical space without turning everything into an ego-driven shred-off, then absolutely.

The magic isn’t simply that both musicians can play brilliantly.

We knew that already.

It’s that they understand restraint.

They understand dynamics.

They understand melody.

And crucially, they understand that collaboration isn’t about sacrificing your musical identity.

It’s about finding where your identity fits alongside somebody else’s.

That is a considerably harder trick than simply playing louder.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

There’s a lesson buried underneath all this glorious prog-rock guitar goodness.

Great musicians don’t always need to compete.

Sometimes the coolest thing two guitarists can do is actually listen to one another.

Steve Hackett and Steve Rothery come from different corners of progressive-rock history, with their own unmistakable sounds and enormous musical legacies.

Yet friendship removed the need for competition.

No ego Olympics.

No fretboard arm wrestling.

No desperate attempt to squeeze 200 notes into a space designed for twelve.

Just two musicians respecting one another and understanding that the best collaboration happens when everybody serves the music.

And frankly?

That’s proper musicianship. 🤘🔥

Because sometimes the most impressive note a guitarist plays…

is the one they realise they don’t need to play.

Now THAT’S prog wisdom, mun. 🎸🧙‍♂️🔥
