Right then Riff Report crew… grab a cuppa (or a pint, we’re not judging) because the rock memorabilia world has just gone completely bonkers.
One of the most legendary guitars in music history — David Gilmour’s iconic Black Strat — has once again become the most expensive guitar ever sold, smashing records at a huge auction featuring treasures from The Jim Irsay Collection.
And the final price?
A tidy little $14.55 million (£11 million).
Yes. For a guitar.
That’s not just rock history — that’s rock royalty with a platinum crown, mun.
🎸 The Guitar Behind Some Of The Greatest Music Ever Made
If you’ve ever stood in a dark room with headphones on while Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” solo melted your brain, chances are you were hearing the magic of the Black Strat.
The guitar started life as a 1969 Fender Stratocaster, but after Gilmour got his hands on it, it became something far more legendary.
This is the very instrument used across Pink Floyd’s golden era, appearing on recordings including:
- The Dark Side of the Moon
- Wish You Were Here
- Animals
- The Wall
In other words… this guitar helped soundtrack one of the greatest runs in music history.
Not bad for a slab of wood and a few strings, eh butt?
💸 The Auction That Broke Rock Memorabilia Records
The guitar was sold as part of The Jim Irsay Collection auction, a massive event featuring some of the most valuable pieces of music history ever put under the hammer.
And it didn’t just break one record — the entire auction went absolutely nuclear.
The sale reportedly brought in over $84 million, with 23 world records smashed across instruments and memorabilia.
Among the other eye-watering sales were:
🎸 Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar – $11.56 million
🎸 Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang from the Smells Like Teen Spirit video – $6.91 million
Safe to say… collectors turned up with their wallets fully loaded.
👑 The Black Strat’s Second Time Wearing The Crown
Here’s the mad bit.
This isn’t the first time the Black Strat has held the title.
Back in 2019, the guitar also set the record for the most expensive guitar ever sold. Since then the crown bounced around a bit — but now the Floyd legend has stormed back to reclaim the throne.
And honestly?
If any guitar deserves that title, it’s this one.
This thing isn’t just an instrument.
It’s a relic of rock mythology.
🤘 Why This Guitar Means So Much
Every now and then an instrument becomes bigger than the musician who played it.
The Black Strat is one of those rare cases where the guitar itself has become a character in rock history.
Fans recognise it instantly.
Gear nerds obsess over it.
And every guitarist on the planet has probably tried to recreate that Gilmour tone at least once.
That soaring, emotional, spine-tingling sound that made stadiums go silent before exploding into applause.
🎤 The Riff Report Verdict
Is $14.55 million an absolutely ridiculous amount of money for a guitar?
Of course it is.
But if you’re going to crown one instrument as the most valuable guitar in the world, it may as well be the one that helped create some of the most powerful music ever recorded.
Because this isn’t just a guitar.
It’s a piece of Pink Floyd history with strings attached.
And somewhere, right now, a guitarist is plugging in their Strat, hitting a delay pedal, bending a note… and dreaming of that Black Strat magic.
Rock history never stops being wild, does it?
Stay loud, stay curious, and keep chasing the riffs.
