om Viking warriors in wellies to daffodil-hatted hype machines, meet the fearless fan leaders who gave the mountain its roar.

🧭 What’s a Crowd Captain?

At Steelhouse Festival, there’s no official title, no ceremony, and definitely no committee – just pure, unfiltered mountain spirit. The Crowd Captain is the soul of the front row, the life of the pit, and the one who turns mud into mayhem and drizzle into drama. They’re the kind of rockers the bands remember.

Some come in costume. Some come with chants. All come with volume, heart, and more enthusiasm than a dragon at a Bon Jovi tribute night.

🎤 The Hall of Crowd Captains – With Stories, Attendance, and Festival Evolution

Year Captain What Made Them a Legend Attendance Festival Evolution
2011 Gaz the Goat 🐐 Carried a blow-up guitar, a crate of beer, and slept by the barrier. He didn’t just attend – he arrived. ~1,000 The very first Steelhouse. Local bands, intimate vibe, one tiny stage, and a lot of mud.
2012 Sian ‘The Siren’ 🔊 Her Whitesnake singalong echoed across the valley – even the merch tent joined in. ~1,500 First signs of growth. Slightly bigger lineup. Rain? Yep. Community spirit? Off the scale.
2013 Mad Dai from Maesteg 🤘 Viking horns, beer stein, inflatable axe. Protected his pit patch like it was Valhalla. ~2,000 The mountain stage got bigger, and so did the crowd. Umbrellas replaced with ponchos.
2014 Lesley with the Lemmy Hat 🖤 Stood through a downpour waving a Motörhead flag. JD in one hand, devil horns in the other. ~2,200 Sound system upgrade. More headline power. The Lemmy shrine at the merch tent made its first appearance.
2015 Neil the Neck 🎤 Headbanged so violently the band stopped to point him out. Crowd legend for life. ~2,500 Bigger campsite. More food vans. Slightly less mud (but only slightly).
2016 Tiny Terry 📸 His 8-foot selfie stick got everyone in. Carried 3 mates on his shoulders during Black Stone Cherry. ~3,000 First year with official photographer passes. Weather: biblical.
2017 Beca of the Bin Bags 🛍️ Made a waterproof tent out of bags and let 20 strangers in. Folk hero. ~3,200 New merch stalls, better fencing, and a campsite that didn’t flood! (Well, not all of it.)
2018 Disco Dave of Dowlais 🕺 Did the Macarena in the mud. Tore his ACL. Came back Day Two with crutches. Didn’t miss a beat. ~3,500 Main stage extended, sound improved, more Welsh bands added to the bill.
2019 Nanny Lyn 🍻 72 years young. Crowd-surfed during Thunder. Bought everyone behind her a pint. ~4,000 Peak “classic era” Steelhouse. Glorious weather. Record sales at the beer tent.
2020 The Phantom of the Pit 👻 Showed up anyway during the COVID cancellation. Brought speakers, solo partied. 0 (official) The year that wasn’t. Virtual gigs tried to fill the void. The mountain missed us.
2021 Alfie and the Dragon 🐲 Hauled a 10ft inflatable dragon up the hill. Crowd chanted its name – “RIFFRAFF!” ~4,000 (COVID-restricted) Safety measures in place. Smaller crowds, but BIG energy.
2022 Jessie from Glynneath 🎨 Painted band logos on fans all weekend. Covered in glitter and joy. ~5,000 Full return. New lighting rigs, video screens, and a merch tent twice the size.
2023 Captain Cymru 🏴 Led the crowd in “C’mon Wales!” chants all weekend. Flag cape never came off. ~6,000 Festival grounds expanded. Queue management improved. Food options got fancy.
2024 The Feathered Flock 🐦 Dressed like Those Damn Crows. Did choreographed moves during every set. ~6,500 The slickest year yet – full sellout, rain AND sun, and that unforgettable headliner set.
2025 Could Be YOU 🤘 Got an idea? Costume? Homemade banner? Want to be immortalised forever? ~7,000 projected 15th anniversary. Rumoured upgrades: bigger main stage, pyro, and possibly a second stage? 👀

🛠️ Festival Upgrades Over the Years

  • Stages Grew: From a humble setup in 2011 to a full rock arena by 2025.

  • Crowds Swelled: From 1,000 soggy rockers to over 7,000 screaming fans.

  • Camping Got Comfier: (Well, a bit.) Better drainage, more zones, and even luxury glamping tents in recent years.

  • Food Levelled Up: Sausage rolls to wood-fired pizza to vegan curries.

  • Welsh Acts Rose: More local heroes like Those Damn Crows, Scarlet Rebels, and Florence Black stormed the lineup.

  • Weather Never Changed: It still rains. It always rains. It wouldn’t be Steelhouse without it. ☔🐉

🐲 Want to Be a Crowd Captain?

Here’s your not-so-secret checklist:

✅ Bring a ridiculous costume
✅ Lead chants, waves, or spontaneous air-guitar duels
✅ Befriend everyone in the pit
✅ Brave the weather without complaint
✅ Lose your voice by Sunday night
✅ Never. Stop. Rocking.

If that’s you – your name might be next on this list. We see you, future legend.

🎪 Final Words from the Mountain

Steelhouse isn’t just a festival – it’s a way of life, a Valleys pilgrimage, and a rain-soaked family reunion where riffs echo through the clouds and memories are carved into the hillside.

From the first note in 2011 to the roaring crowds of 2025, the Crowd Captains have kept the spirit alive. They are the heartbeat of the hill.

So, raise your horns. Wave your flag. Dance in the mud.

The mountain is calling… and it’s waiting for its next hero. 🏔️🎤🐉

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
