The moment metal invaded the mainstream – and blew the speakers clean off the telly 📺💥
August 1st, 1981. MTV bursts onto American television screens with its first ever music video: “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles. How polite. How synthy. How… not metal 😅
But it wouldn’t be long before our beloved heavy metal – all leather, studs, and face-melting solos – came stomping through the door like a bat outta Birmingham. So, c’mon butt… what was the first proper heavy metal video to grace MTV’s airwaves?
👑 The Crown Goes To… Iron Maiden – “Iron Maiden”
That’s right, mun – Iron Maiden’s self-titled track from their 1980 debut album is widely credited as the first heavy metal video played on MTV.
A raw, scrappy black-and-white performance video, full of denim, danger and Di’Anno vocals – this was the moment the beast was unleashed on American TV. 🤘
While the video itself wasn’t slick or flashy, it was pure energy. A fast, fierce introduction to a band that would go on to headline stadiums, festivals, and every metalhead’s bedroom wall.
🎥 Why It Mattered:
- It proved metal could thrive in the visual era.
- It brought NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) to U.S. teens.
- It gave birth to generations of air-guitarists and sleeveless denim jackets.
“Tidy!” – said no one in New Jersey, but definitely someone in Merthyr watching a rerun years later.
🤘 MTV’s Early Metal Moments: Honourable Mentions
Let’s be real – in those early days, MTV was still finding its sound. It wasn’t wall-to-wall metal just yet. You had to wade through a lot of eyeliner and synths before the good stuff arrived.
Here’s who else banged on the door early:
🎧 Judas Priest – You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ (1982)
When MTV finally started giving metal a real slot, this Priest classic became an unofficial anthem. Rob Halford in mirrored aviators? YES MUN.
🔥 Def Leppard – Bringin’ on the Heartbreak (1981)
MTV loved a power ballad with good hair. This video made Leppard explode in America. It was soaked in fog machines and featured more slow-motion guitar swinging than a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute act in a wind tunnel.
🚂 Ozzy Osbourne – Crazy Train
Now here’s where it gets mad. Ozzy’s iconic anthem didn’t get a proper MTV video straight away – but when it did land, it rocketed him to solo superstardom. Bite a bat, smash a stage, steal the show – classic Ozzy.
🤓 Wasn’t Rush Played Too?
Yes! “Tom Sawyer” by Rush also got early airplay and deserves a nod. It’s not technically heavy metal – more prog-rock-meets-synthwave madness – but that riff slaps harder than your dad’s flip-flops on a caravan holiday.
Also featured in early MTV days:
- The Who – “You Better You Bet” (not metal, but still loud enough to rattle your nan’s crockery)
- 38 Special – “Hold On Loosely” (southern rock goodness)
- Blondie – “Rapture” (included for sheer weirdness)
But Maiden? They were first blood. ⚔️
🤯 MTV: Love It or Loathe It?
Let’s be honest, MTV helped metal explode in the ’80s. It was the highway to hell for spandex and speed riffs. But as time went on, the suits started favouring pop, boybands, and whatever TikTok would become 40 years later 😩
Still – those early years? They gave us:
- Headbangers Ball
- Monsters of Rock
- And enough hair spray to power a small Welsh mining village for a decade.
🧠 Fun Fact for Your Next Pub Quiz
MTV’s first 24 hours only featured a few dozen videos, repeated endlessly. Iron Maiden’s self-titled track squeezed its way in – and became the gateway drug for generations of metal maniacs.
By 1983, bands like Motley Crüe, Van Halen, Twisted Sister and Metallica were everywhere. The floodgates were open, and the devil horns were flying.
🎤 So, What’s the Verdict?
If you’re arguing over pints, remember this:
Iron Maiden – “Iron Maiden” was the one that truly kicked metal into MTV history.
Not glammed up. Not cleaned up. Just raw, British, face-shredding rock ‘n’ roll.
We salute you, Eddie 🫡
💬 What’s Occurring, MTV Now?
Want to know what’s happening on MTV today? Neither do we. It’s mostly reality shows and influencers who wouldn’t know a Tony Iommi riff if it smacked them in the Love Island villa. 🙄
But once upon a time?
MTV belonged to the metalheads.
And the first sword in the stone… was Maiden. ⚔️🩸
