Listen up, metalheads and gig-goers โ thereโs a dark plague out there, and no, itโs not the mosh pit flu. Itโs SCAMMERS โ those low-life, basement-dwelling keyboard goblins who try to steal your hard-earned beer money by pretending to be your favourite bands. ๐ค๐ก
Over the past few months, weโve seen a spike in fake profiles popping up on Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter for us old-schoolers), and even TikTok โ all pretending to be your rock idols. Theyโll slide into your DMs smoother than a 1987 glam-metal power ballad, telling you theyโve got โexclusive merch,โ โsecret VIP meet and greets,โ or โlimited edition signed guitarsโ โฆ for a small fortune. ๐ธ
๐ซ Hereโs the truth:
No legitimate band member โ from Judas Priest to Joe Bloggs & the Bin Rats โ is going to message you personally asking for cash. No management team is going to run their business through a dodgy Gmail account. Anything real will always come from an official, verified profile โ the kind with that little blue tick or official label.
These scammers prey on excitement and fandom, hoping youโll be so hyped about chatting to your rock heroes that you wonโt notice the massive red flags ๐ฉ. But cโmon butt, weโre smarter than that!
๐ต How to Spot a Fake Rock Star Online:
Weird usernames โ โRobH@lford.Officialโ or โJudas_Priest_Fan_Page_1983โ is NOT the real deal. Broken English or odd phrasing โ unless your favourite frontman suddenly forgot how to speak. Requests for payment via gift cards, PayPal Friends & Family, or cryptocurrency โ this ainโt eBay, mun. Overly personal messages โ your idol isnโt going to call you โdear friendโ or ask what you had for breakfast before offering you a โspecial business opportunity.โ
๐ฅ What to Do if a Scammer Hits You Up:
Do not reply โ any interaction just encourages them. Report the account โ every platform has a โReportโ button. Warn others โ share screenshots in fan groups so more people donโt get caught out. Block them โ they canโt scam you if they canโt see you.
We report every fake account we come across, and we suggest you do the same. Letโs keep the scene safe for everyone โ so the only thing weโre losing at a gig is our voices after a massive encore. ๐ค๐ฅ
Stay safe, stay loud, and remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Unless itโs free beer at Download โ then itโs definitely a trap. ๐บ๐
