How the Tribute Began
The spark came from musician and long-time family friend Dudley Ross, who also happens to be the UK booker and tour manager for Josh Smith, second guitarist to Joe Bonamassa.
Dudley floated a simple but powerful idea:

Thanks to long-standing friendships in the blues world, the idea wasnโt as far-fetched as it sounds. Mattโs dad, Paul Long, previously worked as producer on the Paul Jones Blues Show, collaborating with Joe Bonamassa during his early UK days. The Long family had shared backstage moments, conversations, and memories with Joe over the years.
Stillโฆ when Joe said yes, it hit different.
When grief met groove, the blues did what itโs always done best.

What started as a simple act of love quickly grew teeth, soul, and purpose.

Matt Long โ The Man Behind the Songs

Matt Long was a songwriter, guitarist, bandmate, and son whose life revolved around music and the people drawn to it. He wasnโt chasing hype or headlines โ he was chasing feel. Tone mattered. Space mattered. Saying something honest mattered most of all.
The blues wasnโt a costume for Matt; it was his natural language. His songs leaned into emotion over ego, melody over flash, and lyrics that spoke plainly but landed heavy. You can hear lived experience in his writing โ empathy, reflection, resilience โ the stuff the blues has always been built on.

Matt was diagnosed with cancer far too young, a moment that hit his family and the wider music community like a punch to the chest. What followed was a relentless, exhausting fight โ hospital visits, treatment cycles, hope, setbacks, and long stretches of waiting.
Through it all, music never left him.
Even during treatment, Matt stayed connected to the scene โ writing when he could, talking gear, swapping songs, and staying part of the community that had always felt like home. Benefit gigs were organised across the country to help fund additional treatment options, and musicians turned up in force.
Those nights werenโt charity shows.
They were acts of solidarity.

At its core, this album lives and breathes the blues โ not just as a genre, but as a way of surviving hard truths.
The blues has always taken lifeโs most painful moments and turned them into something shared. Long before it filled clubs and festivals, it existed to tell the truth plainly and play it honestly.

Mattโs songwriting sat squarely in that tradition. Whether slow-burning and reflective or gritty and driving, his songs always served the feeling first โ the purest blues instinct of all.
From One Idea to a Double-Vinyl Blues Statement
Things escalated quickly. In the best possible way.
What could have been a single tribute track grew into a double vinyl album, featuring 16 original Matt Long songs, each reimagined by artists who stood by him during his illness and played benefit gigs across the country last summer.
The response from the music community was instant and overwhelming. No hesitation. No half-measures. People showed up โ properly.
Two tracks retain Mattโs original vocals, now lifted sky-high by deeply soulful guitar work from Joe Bonamassa and Walter Trout. These moments donโt feel like guest spots โ they feel like quiet conversations between players who understood exactly what these songs meant.

One of the defining traits of blues music is conversation โ guitar answering vocal, rhythm sections breathing with the song, musicians listening as much as they play.

Much of Mattโs treatment took place at Royal Surrey County Hospital, where the care he received left a lasting impression on his family โ not just clinically, but humanly.
Nurses, doctors, and staff treated Matt with dignity, warmth, and compassion at a time when those things mattered as much as medicine. Thatโs why this album gives back there โ not symbolically, but directly.
