Finnish rock favourites The Rasmus have put their own stamp on one of the most enduring songs of the 1980s, releasing a cover of Alphaville’s timeless synth-pop anthem “Forever Young”.

Now this is an interesting collision of worlds.

The Rasmus have taken on “Forever Young”, the atmospheric 1980s classic originally made famous by German synth-pop outfit Alphaville, giving the much-loved track a fresh lease of life through their own darker rock sensibilities.

It’s one of those songs practically everybody has heard somewhere.

Films.

Television.

Weddings.

Late-night playlists.

Questionable drunken singalongs.

And now it’s wandered into the hands of the band behind “In The Shadows”.

We’re very much listening.

🖤 The Rasmus Take On An ’80s Favourite

“Forever Young” has always carried a strange combination of beauty and melancholy.

On the surface, it’s this soaring, instantly recognisable anthem about remaining young forever.

Dig a little deeper and things become considerably more reflective.

Time passing.

Mortality.

Uncertainty.

The desire to hold onto moments before they disappear.

Cheery little number, really.

That emotional atmosphere makes it surprisingly well suited to The Rasmus, whose music has frequently balanced massive melodies with a darker, moodier edge.

🎹 Alphaville Created An Enduring Classic

Originally released by Alphaville in 1984, “Forever Young” became the title track of the German band’s debut album.

While Alphaville were firmly rooted in the synth-pop and new-wave landscape of the era, the song eventually grew far beyond its original surroundings.

Decades later, it remains one of those rare tracks capable of connecting with completely different generations.

You don’t necessarily need to know who recorded it.

You just know that chorus.

That’s when you know a song has escaped into popular culture permanently.

🤘 A Natural Fit For The Rasmus

The Rasmus might be considerably more guitar-driven than Alphaville, but there’s plenty of common ground between them.

Atmosphere.

Melody.

Drama.

A willingness to lean into the slightly darker side of pop music.

The Finnish band have never been afraid of a gigantic chorus either.

Their worldwide breakthrough “In The Shadows” remains one of the defining alternative-rock singles of the early 2000s, powered by that instantly recognisable melody and Lauri Ylönen’s distinctive vocals.

More than two decades later, you can still play the opening few seconds in a rock club and watch an entire room suddenly remember every word.

🇫🇮 The Rasmus Keep Evolving

The Rasmus have spent decades moving between alternative rock, gothic influences, pop hooks and heavier guitar music without becoming trapped inside one particular box.

That flexibility makes a cover like “Forever Young” feel less like a random curveball and more like another opportunity for the band to explore a song with serious emotional weight.

Great cover versions shouldn’t simply reproduce the original note for note.

If you want that, the original record already exists.

The fun comes from hearing what happens when another artist takes a familiar song and filters it through their own musical personality.

And “Forever Young” gives The Rasmus plenty of atmosphere to play with.

🎤 Lauri Ylönen And Those Huge Melodies

Frontman Lauri Ylönen has always possessed a voice suited to dramatic material.

There’s an unmistakable melancholy running through many of The Rasmus’ biggest songs, even when the choruses are massive enough to fill arenas.

That combination fits the emotional character of “Forever Young” remarkably well.

It’s nostalgic without being sugary.

Dark without being completely miserable.

And huge without needing to become bombastic.

Basically, ideal territory for The Rasmus.

📼 Why ’80s Songs Keep Coming Back

There’s a reason bands continually return to the 1980s for inspiration.

The decade produced an absurd number of melodies that refuse to die.

Synth-pop.

New wave.

Goth.

Hard rock.

Heavy metal.

Post-punk.

Arena rock.

The musical landscape was all over the place, and plenty of those songs were built around absolutely enormous hooks.

“Forever Young” is one of the survivors.

More than forty years after its original release, artists are still interpreting it because the heart of the song remains strong enough to work in different genres.

Strip away the distinctly ’80s production and the songwriting still holds up.

That’s the important bit.

🕯️ A Song About Time That Refuses To Age

There’s also something wonderfully appropriate about “Forever Young” continuing to be reinvented decades after its release.

A song about youth and the passing of time has itself refused to disappear.

Rather poetic, that.

Every generation seems to discover it again.

Then another cover appears.

Another film uses it.

Another audience attaches its own memories to it.

And suddenly a track from 1984 is sitting comfortably alongside music made more than four decades later.

Not many songs manage that.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Covering something as familiar as “Forever Young” can be risky.

Everybody knows it.

Everybody has their own relationship with it.

And somewhere, inevitably, somebody will insist nobody should ever touch the original.

Ignore them.

Rock music has always thrived on musicians grabbing songs they love and making them their own.

The Rasmus and Alphaville might come from different corners of the musical universe, but the combination makes plenty of sense.

Dark atmosphere?

Check.

Giant melody?

Check.

Emotional lyrics?

Absolutely.

And another excuse to disappear down an ’80s nostalgia rabbit hole afterwards?

Dangerously likely.

The Rasmus taking on “Forever Young” is exactly the sort of unexpected cover we enjoy — familiar enough to drag you in, but intriguing enough to make you want to hear what they’ve done with it.

Now excuse us while we spend the rest of the afternoon alternating between “Forever Young” and “In The Shadows” at irresponsible volume.

Forever young? Maybe. Forever riffing? Definitely. 🤘🖤🎶
