When Radiohead announce a run of shows, you don’t just buy a ticket — you prepare your soul. But even by Radiohead standards, this one will go down in live-music legend. Over four nights at London’s O2 Arena, the Oxford icons didn’t just perform…

They rewrote the venue’s history books, smashed one of the hardest records to crack, and sent 22,355 fans into an existential meltdown per night. 💫

Let’s get into the chaos, the crowds, the production wizardry, and why this might be one of the most important live runs by any band this decade.

🎸 A RECORD THAT’S STOOD SINCE 2017 — UNTIL NOW

The O2 Arena is no stranger to big numbers: Beyoncé, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, BTS — all giants who have shaken the walls. But the attendance record?

That belonged to the masters of metal, Metallica, who set the benchmark back in 2017.

Well… it used to. 😏

Enter Radiohead — the band who can sell out arenas without saying a word, drop an album with no warning, and turn a room full of strangers into a sobbing collective consciousness.

Their four-night residency didn’t just match the record.

It outpaced it.

Night after night, the numbers climbed — and by the final show, Radiohead officially clocked an insane 22,355 fans inside the O2.

The new all-time attendance record.

Metallica dethroned.

A seismic moment in live-music history.

🎇 THE 360° STAGE: RADIOHEAD’S “IN THE ROUND” MASTERPIECE

Now, this wasn’t your standard end-stage setup.

Radiohead went full 360°, performing “in the round,” with a cylindrical tower of screens and lights rising like a futuristic monolith right in the centre of the arena.

Fans surrounded the band from every direction — a complete visual and sonic immersion.

It meant:

More floor space More sightlines More bodies in the building More opportunity for Thom Yorke to haunt you with direct eye contact

The production was wild — a shifting kaleidoscope of glitch visuals, soft hues, brutalist strobes, and that trademark Radiohead “digital melancholy” aesthetic that makes you question your entire personality.

🎤 THE SETLISTS — ROTATING, CHAOTIC, BEAUTIFUL

Radiohead don’t do “playlist mode.”

They treat every night like a new chapter.

Across the four shows, fans were treated to:

💥 Fan-Favourite Deep Cuts

“How to Disappear Completely” “True Love Waits” (tears everywhere) “Airbag” “Pyramid Song”

🎛️ Electronic-era Monsters

“Idioteque” → pure chaos “Everything In Its Right Place” → church for emos “The Gloaming” → bewildered dads everywhere

🎸 Classics That Broke Brains

“Paranoid Android” “High & Dry” (rare appearance!) “Karma Police” — arena sing-along that absolutely slapped

Each night shifted, evolved, and offered its own emotional gear shifts. Fans who attended multiple nights (and there were loads) basically lived through the stages of grief and rebirth.

👀 THE CROWD: A RELIGION, NOT A FANBASE

The O2 has seen its fair share of madness — from mosh pits the size of small countries to emotional breakdowns during balads. But this crowd?

It was different.

Radiohead fans don’t just exist in the room.

They collectively transcend.

You had:

Millennials who grew up with The Bends Gen Z who discovered the band through TikTok edits of “Motion Picture Soundtrack” Dads explaining Kid A like it’s a political manifesto People dressed like climate-conscious art teachers Entire rows crying during “Exit Music (For a Film)”

And every night, the roar grew louder… until Night 4 hit the full 22,355 and the O2 practically levitated.

🤘 METALLICA VS RADIOHEAD — TWO VERY DIFFERENT KINGS

Let’s be clear: Metallica still rule the metal world with iron fists and flying V guitars. Their 2017 run was huge, heavy, and historic.

But Radiohead breaking this record?

It’s symbolic.

It shows:

The undeniable longevity of alternative rock The cross-generational pull of their music How their live shows have evolved into high-art events That you don’t need pyro and 12-foot flames to dominate an arena (though both is great, obviously)

Plus, watching the fanbases banter online is pure chaos entertainment.

Who knew Radiohead fans had this much confidence? 😂

💫 WHY THIS RUN WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR YEARS

There are big shows… and then there are era-defining shows.

Radiohead’s O2 takeover belongs in the latter category.

Here’s why:

⭐ Historic attendance figures

New O2 record. Enough said.

⭐ Stunning visual production

A 360° sci-fi dome that turned the arena into a sensory dreamscape.

⭐ A band evolving in real time

Still experimental, still unpredictable.

⭐ Fans witnessing something once-in-a-generation

The kind of gigs people brag about attending for decades.

⭐ A reminder of Radiohead’s cultural power

Even after all these years… they still move the earth beneath us.

🙌 FINAL THOUGHTS — A MOMENT FOR THE BOOKS

Radiohead didn’t just break a record — they created a moment the entire UK music scene is buzzing about. In a year packed with comeback tours, reunion rumours, and massive festival announcements, these four nights still manage to stand out as one of 2025’s defining live-music events.

22,355 fans.

Four nights.

One band.

A new O2 attendance king is crowned. 👑

And honestly?

Thom Yorke looked like he could’ve done four more.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
