From Alien and Blade Runner to The Martian — Sir Ridley Scott has spent decades making us stare into the darkness and wonder what the hell might be staring back. Now, that extraordinary contribution to science-inspired cinema has earned him one seriously prestigious honour.

Legendary British filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott has been presented with the 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, recognising a career that has repeatedly brought enormous scientific, technological and philosophical questions onto cinema screens around the world.

And who helped present it?

Oh, only Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Sir Brian May alongside astrophysicist and fellow STARMUS co-founder Garik Israelian.

Cinema royalty meets rock royalty meets astrophysics.

That’s a sentence we thoroughly approve of. 🤘🚀

🏅 Ridley Scott Receives the Stephen Hawking Medal

Scott received the honour following the global premiere of his latest film, The Dog Stars.

The presentation took place at Claridge’s in London, where Brian May and Garik Israelian presented Scott with the Stephen Hawking Medal alongside a special OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch crafted in 18K Moonshine Gold.

The three then sat down to discuss some wonderfully enormous subjects including filmmaking, art, science, humanity, extraterrestrial life and the continuing legacy of Professor Stephen Hawking.

You know — standard afternoon conversation.

No arguing over whether pineapple belongs on pizza here, mun.

Scott’s award recognises his extraordinary ability to take complex scientific ideas and turn them into films capable of captivating millions of people.

And when you look at his CV, it’s difficult to argue with that.

👽 Alien – In Space, Nobody Can Hear Your Science Communication

Let’s start with the obvious one.

1979’s Alien.

Scott took audiences into deep space aboard the Nostromo and delivered one of cinema’s greatest combinations of science fiction and horror.

The Xenomorph became one of the most recognisable creatures in movie history, but beneath the chest-bursting carnage were questions surrounding extraterrestrial biology, corporate exploitation, artificial intelligence and humanity’s vulnerability when venturing into the unknown.

And let’s be fair.

It also taught us one incredibly valuable scientific lesson:

If you find a massive weird egg on an alien planet, DON’T PUT YOUR BLOODY FACE OVER IT.

Forty-seven years later and apparently this still needs explaining. 😂👽

🤖 Blade Runner Asked Questions We’re STILL Trying to Answer

Then came 1982’s Blade Runner.

Initially divisive, the film grew into one of the most influential science-fiction movies ever made.

Scott’s rain-soaked vision of Los Angeles brought artificial humans — Replicants — into a world where the boundary between biological and artificial life had become increasingly difficult to define.

What makes something human?

Can artificial intelligence develop emotions?

Could synthetic beings become conscious?

Do artificially created lives deserve the same rights as humans?

Those questions sounded like distant science fiction in 1982.

In 2026?

Errr…

Have you seen the news lately? 🤖😂

Suddenly Blade Runner doesn’t feel quite so distant.

🧬 Prometheus Went Looking for Humanity’s Creators

Scott returned to the Alien universe with *2012’s Prometheus, but rather than simply unleashing another Xenomorph rampage, he aimed for something much bigger.

Where did humanity come from?

Could intelligent extraterrestrial life have influenced our development?

What happens when humanity finally meets its creator?

And perhaps most importantly…

What happens if our creator doesn’t particularly like us?

The film explored evolution, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, religion and humanity’s obsessive desire to understand its own origins.

Whether you loved every answer Prometheus provided or spent three hours afterwards arguing about it in the pub, the questions themselves stuck around.

And that’s exactly the sort of curiosity STARMUS celebrates.

🚀 The Martian Made Science the Hero

Then there’s 2015’s The Martian.

Rather than aliens trying to eat everyone, this time Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney became stranded on Mars and had to rely on science, engineering and an impressive refusal to die.

Botany.

Orbital mechanics.

Engineering.

Chemistry.

Problem solving.

And potatoes.

Lots and lots of potatoes. 🥔🚀

Scott transformed scientific problem-solving into blockbuster entertainment.

That’s quite an achievement when you think about it.

No laser battles required.

Just one extremely stubborn astronaut trying to survive millions of miles from home.

🌌 Why Ridley Scott Was Chosen

According to STARMUS, Scott’s body of work has encouraged audiences to consider questions including extraterrestrial life, humanity’s origins, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, space exploration and survival beyond Earth.

Garik Israelian praised Scott for inspiring millions of people to consider some of humanity’s biggest questions.

Are we alone?

Where did we come from?

What is intelligence?

Could humanity survive on another world?

Those themes have run throughout Scott’s filmmaking career.

And that’s why the Stephen Hawking Medal feels particularly appropriate.

🧠 Ridley Scott Has One Question for Stephen Hawking

During the conversation, Israelian asked Scott something fascinating.

If he had the opportunity to speak with Stephen Hawking, what would he ask him?

Scott’s answer?

“What’s your opinion about God?”

Now THAT’S how you kick open a conversation.

Scott went on to discuss his suspicion that there could potentially be something beyond humanity’s current understanding, even questioning whether some form of entity might be observing us.

Forget asking Hawking about black holes.

Ridley went straight for the final boss question. 😂🌌

🏅 What Is the Stephen Hawking Medal?

The Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication was launched in 2015 in association with STARMUS and Professor Stephen Hawking himself.

Its purpose is beautifully simple:

Celebrate people who make science accessible, exciting and meaningful to the wider public.

And crucially, that doesn’t necessarily mean scientists.

The award recognises science communication through areas including writing, broadcasting, music, film and art.

The medal itself carries some seriously wonderful history.

One side features a portrait of Stephen Hawking created by legendary cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first human to perform a spacewalk.

The other incorporates imagery celebrating space exploration alongside Brian May’s iconic Red Special guitar.

Science.

Space.

Rock ‘n’ roll.

That’s basically The Riff Report’s dream medal. 🎸🚀

🎸 Brian May – Rock Star AND Astrophysicist

Of course, Brian May’s involvement with STARMUS makes perfect sense.

Yes, he’s the guitarist from Queen.

Yes, he’s responsible for some of the most recognisable guitar solos in rock history.

And yes, he also happens to hold a PhD in astrophysics.

Because apparently being Brian May wasn’t impressive enough already.

May co-founded STARMUS alongside Garik Israelian, creating something wonderfully unusual — an international festival where science, astronomy, exploration, music and art collide.

It’s essentially what happens when a scientific conference discovers guitar amplifiers.

Naturally, we’re fans. 🤘

🌟 Some Seriously Impressive Company

Scott joins an extraordinary list of previous Stephen Hawking Medal recipients.

Past honourees include figures and projects from across science, entertainment, music and exploration, including:

🎼 Hans Zimmer

🔭 Neil deGrasse Tyson

🚀 Buzz Aldrin

🎹 Jean-Michel Jarre

🎧 Brian Eno

🌍 Sir David Attenborough

🎬 Christopher Nolan

🚀 NASA’s TV and communications operation

🌿 Jane Goodall

And even The Big Bang Theory has received recognition.

Not exactly a quiet little trophy cabinet, is it?

🔭 STARMUS VIII Is Coming

The 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal Ceremony forms part of STARMUS VIII: The Search for Truth, taking place across Tenerife and La Palma from 17–22 October 2026.

STARMUS brings together scientists, astronauts, Nobel Prize winners, musicians, artists, filmmakers and thinkers in a celebration of curiosity and exploration.

Basically, imagine the world’s cleverest festival…

Only instead of everyone arguing about who’s headlining the Apex Stage, they’re discussing black holes and whether extraterrestrial civilisation exists.

Although knowing Brian May, there’ll probably still be a guitar nearby. 🎸👽

🎬 The Riff Report Verdict

Ridley Scott receiving the Stephen Hawking Medal feels incredibly fitting.

His movies haven’t simply shown us futuristic cities, alien planets and terrifying creatures.

They’ve made generations of viewers ask questions.

Could something else be out there?

Could machines become conscious?

Where did humanity come from?

Can we survive away from Earth?

What actually makes us human?

The best science fiction doesn’t necessarily predict the future.

It makes us think about it.

From the terrifying corridors of the Nostromo in Alien, through the neon-soaked streets of Blade Runner, into the mysteries of Prometheus and across the dusty landscape of Mars in The Martian, Ridley Scott has been doing exactly that for decades.

And now one of cinema’s greatest directors has an award carrying the name of one of science’s greatest minds.

Sir Ridley Scott.

Stephen Hawking.

Sir Brian May.

Science, cinema and rock ‘n’ roll colliding beautifully.

Absolutely bloody tidy. 🎬🚀🎸🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
