Festivals don’t just appear fully formed like some mystical tented city in a field. Nah, they’re built pint by pint, riff by riff, and often by a gang of slightly mad mates with big dreams. That’s the story of Kendal Calling – the little Cumbrian bash that grew from a 900-capacity party in a park to a 40,000-strong beast of the British festival calendar.

Grab your wellies, your glitter, and maybe a rain poncho, mun – because this is the full history of Kendal Calling.

🌱 ERA ONE: THE ORIGINS (2006–2008)

Picture it: 2006, a sleepy corner of Kendal in the Lake District. The hills are alive, not with the sound of sheep, but with the sound of Pendulum, British Sea Power, and a few hundred music-hungry punters.

Kendal Calling’s birth wasn’t some corporate brainstorm in a London boardroom. It was DIY spirit through and through. A bunch of mates who wanted a proper party thought, “Why not?” and hired out Abbot Hall Park. They expected a laugh, maybe a bit of chaos. What they didn’t expect was 900 sweaty, ecstatic fans crammed into a tent, roaring along like it was Wembley.

By 2007, the word had spread. The fest moved to Grate Farm, doubled capacity to about 2,000, and booked Grooverider, Dirty Pretty Things, and local lads Wild Beasts. Kendal was starting to feel less like a knees-up and more like an actual festival.

Then came 2008 – the year the mud gods blessed the Lakes. The rain poured, the fields turned to swamp, and 4,000 brave souls trudged through sludge to watch Dizzee Rascal, Super Furry Animals, Beardyman, and DJ Yoda. Yoda famously declared the dance tent “better than Glasto”. Bold claim, but when you’re raving in a deer park with mud up to your knees, maybe he had a point.

💡 Vibe Check: The Origins Era was all about DIY spirit. Tiny capacity, wild ambition, and a sense that you were part of something brand new. The mud was free, the chaos was real, and everyone left thinking: this might just take off…

🦌 ERA TWO: THE DEER PARK YEARS (2009–2013)

2009 was the year Kendal Calling found its home. The move to Lowther Deer Park was a game-changer. Suddenly, the festival had room to breathe – and to dream bigger.

Here, nestled in the Cumbrian hills with herds of deer casually wandering about, Kendal Calling levelled up. Out went the small-scale scrappiness; in came outdoor main stages, themed arenas, sleigh rides, and even cosmic “Cumbrian Olympics.” It wasn’t just a festival anymore – it was a playground.

The line-ups grew with the space. The Streets, Ash, Frank Turner, and a little band called Mumford & Sons lit up 2009. By 2010, we’re talking Calvin Harris, Doves, and Badly Drawn Boy. Capacity hit 8,000, and Kendal Calling scooped the UK Festival Award for Best Small Festival. Not bad for a fest still barely a toddler.

From 2011 to 2013, the Deer Park became the UK’s most unlikely festival hotspot. Chase & Status, The Cribs, James, and Blondie all headlined. The festival introduced live streaming, so those stuck at home could watch Blondie belt out “Heart of Glass” while crying into their Pot Noodles.

By 2013, Kendal was no longer “small” by any measure – and it proved it by winning Best Medium Festival. The Deer Park wasn’t just home; it was the launchpad.

💡 Vibe Check: The Deer Park Years were all about arrival. Kendal Calling went from plucky upstart to award-winning contender. The fields felt bigger, the headliners heavier, and the hangovers… well, they got worse too.

🏆 ERA THREE: THEMES, MUD & MAYHEM (2014–2019)

This was Kendal Calling in its prime. By the mid-2010s, the fest was pulling 20,000+ fans, and the organisers leaned into the chaos with annual fancy-dress themes. “Into the Wild,” “Into the Future,” even full-blown Jurassic Park vibes – it became as much about inflatable T-Rexes in the crowd as it was about guitars.

The line-ups? Pure filth (in the best way).

  • 2014: Suede, Frank Turner, Example, Super Furry Animals – all while the site drowned in biblical mud.
  • 2017: “Into the Wild” saw Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, and Franz Ferdinand owning the stage.
  • 2018: “Into the Future” with The Libertines, Catfish & the Bottlemen, and Plan B.
  • 2019: Arguably the best year yet: Courteeners, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Doves, Manic Street Preachers, and actual national treasure Tom Jones. Nothing says festival quite like drunkenly belting “Delilah” while knee-deep in Cumbrian swamp water.

The festival wasn’t just music – it was art, comedy, circus acts, and random deer watching you while you staggered back to your tent at 5am.

💡 Vibe Check: The Mayhem Era was peak Kendal – creative themes, mad costumes, iconic headliners, and enough mud to start your own clay pottery class. If you went during these years, you didn’t just go to a festival – you joined a tribe.

🦠 ERA FOUR: THE PANDEMIC PAUSE (2020–2021)

Then came 2020, and like every other fest on the planet, Kendal Calling slammed on the brakes. COVID killed the live scene, and Lowther Deer Park went quiet.

But Kendal doesn’t do silence. The team launched Kendal Calling Radio, streaming sets from past years and even new performances from the likes of Nile Rodgers and Frank Turner. Fans dressed up at home, cracked tinnies in their gardens, and pretended their washing lines were festival flagpoles. It wasn’t the same – but it kept the spirit alive.

2021 tried to make a comeback, but restrictions said otherwise. The deer got a two-year holiday from 40,000 glitter-soaked humans.

💡 Vibe Check: The Pandemic Pause was eerie – no mud, no Tom Jones, no inflatable dinosaurs. But the community spirit proved that Kendal Calling wasn’t just a place; it was a feeling.

🎉 ERA FIVE: THE BIG RETURN (2022–NOW)

Absence makes the riffs grow louder, and when Kendal Calling came back in 2022, it was like a shotgun start.

The festival added new areas like Parklands and Oktoberfest, and brought in Stereophonics, Bastille, and The Vaccinesto shake the Deer Park awake. Over 200 artists played across nine stages, and fans cried, moshed, and hugged like long-lost siblings reunited.

In 2023, Kendal Calling flexed even harder:

  • Kasabian brought the swagger.
  • Royal Blood brought the riffs.
  • Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds brought the Oasis anthems (without the fights).
  • Blossoms, Paolo Nutini, Sugababes, and wild collabs like Rick Astley covering AC/DC with The Lottery Winners gave it that chaotic Kendal twist.

Now the fest stands tall as a 40,000-capacity giant, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Glastonbury, Reading, and Download – but with its own Cumbrian soul.

💡 Vibe Check: The Big Return is all about celebration. After the pandemic, Kendal Calling feels more vital than ever. It’s bigger, bolder, and still proudly daft.

🍺 FINAL PINT: WHAT MAKES KENDAL CALLING SPECIAL?

Some festivals are about size. Some are about legacy. Kendal Calling? It’s about heart. From its DIY origins to its themed chaos and its massive modern line-ups, KC has always kept that spark of creativity and community alive.

It’s the kind of fest where you can:

  • Watch Tom Jones serenade a field of soaked revellers.
  • Spot a bloke in a full dinosaur costume ordering a pint.
  • Rave at 3am while deer casually graze nearby.
  • Leave covered in mud but grinning ear to ear.

Kendal Calling isn’t just a festival. It’s a rite of passage for anyone who loves music, madness, and a bit of rain-soaked magic.

And to think, it all started with a few mates, a tent, and 900 curious punters back in 2006. Tidy! 🏴🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
