Some news stories make you smile.
Some make you headbang.
And then some hit you square in the chest like a slow-motion emotional piledriver while Black Hole Sun plays somewhere in the distance through rainy speakers.

This is one of those stories. 🌧️🖤

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil has confirmed that the surviving members of the legendary Seattle icons are continuing work on the band’s final album — featuring unreleased vocals from the late, irreplaceable Chris Cornell.

And honestly, mun… rock fans everywhere are feeling ALL the emotions right now.

Because this isn’t just another posthumous release.
This isn’t some AI-generated nostalgia gimmick or a half-finished collection of scraps thrown online for streams.

This is Soundgarden’s final chapter.
The final recordings featuring one of the greatest voices rock music has ever known. 🎙️🔥

🌧️ THE STORY THAT NEVER REALLY ENDED

Ever since Chris Cornell’s tragic passing in 2017, there’s been one huge unanswered question hanging over the world of rock music:

“What happens to the unfinished Soundgarden album?”

Fans knew material existed.
Band members had spoken in interviews over the years about songs being worked on before Cornell’s death. Rumours swirled constantly online. Every few months another update would appear, only for silence to follow again.

And honestly? You couldn’t blame them for taking their time.

How do you even BEGIN to approach finishing an album after losing someone like Chris Cornell?

This wasn’t just a singer.
This was a brother. A friend. A creative force that helped define the entire identity of the band.

There were legal disputes. Emotional struggles. Questions over ownership and recordings. Years where it genuinely felt like the project might stay unfinished forever.

But now, for the first time in a long while, things finally feel real again.

Kim Thayil’s recent comments weren’t vague little “maybe one day” statements either. He openly explained that finishing the record matters deeply for Chris Cornell’s legacy.

And fair play. Because if there’s ANY band that deserves to complete their story properly, it’s Soundgarden.

🎸 SOUNDGARDEN WERE NEVER JUST “A GRUNGE BAND”

Here’s the thing younger rock fans sometimes don’t fully understand:

Soundgarden weren’t just part of the grunge movement.

They helped CREATE the atmosphere that made it explode in the first place. 🔥

Before Seattle became a global music landmark… before every fashion brand on earth started selling flannel shirts for £70… before “alternative rock” became radio friendly…

Soundgarden were already making monstrous, strange, hypnotic music that sounded like it had crawled directly out of a smoke-filled underground club at 2am.

They mixed:

  • heavy metal
  • punk
  • psychedelic rock
  • sludge
  • doom
  • classic hard rock
  • pure sonic weirdness

…and somehow made it work perfectly.

While other bands wrote catchy rock songs, Soundgarden sounded dangerous.
Unpredictable.
Massive.
Like the musical equivalent of standing under a collapsing building while riffs fall from the sky.

Albums like:

  • Badmotorfinger
  • Superunknown
  • Down on the Upside

…didn’t just become successful records.

They became sacred texts for rock fans. 📖🔥

Even today, bands across rock, metal, stoner rock, grunge revival, sludge, and alternative music still carry pieces of Soundgarden’s DNA in their sound.

Without Soundgarden, modern heavy music looks VERY different.

🎙️ CHRIS CORNELL’S VOICE STILL FEELS UNTTOUCHABLE

Let’s be honest here, butt.

Chris Cornell wasn’t operating on the same level as normal singers. 😮‍💨

The man had one of those once-in-a-generation voices that could do absolutely everything.

Smooth? Yep.
Soulful? Absolutely.
Painful? Heartbreaking.
Heavy? Like a collapsing mountain.
High notes? Ridiculous.
Emotion? Enough to level entire buildings.

There are rock vocalists.
Then there are people whose voices become part of music history forever.

Cornell sits alongside names like:

  • Freddie Mercury
  • Layne Staley
  • Ronnie James Dio
  • Robert Plant

…where the second you hear them sing, you KNOW exactly who it is.

Tracks like:

  • Black Hole Sun
  • Spoonman
  • Fell on Black Days
  • The Day I Tried to Live
  • Outshined
  • Burden in My Hand

…still sound gigantic decades later.

And somehow, even after all these years, his voice STILL feels modern. STILL feels fresh. STILL sounds like nobody else on Earth.

That’s rare.

That’s legendary.

😭 ROCK FANS ARE ALREADY PREPARING FOR EMOTIONAL DAMAGE

The second Kim Thayil’s comments started doing the rounds online, fans immediately descended into emotional chaos.

Social media timelines became a mix of:

  • people posting old gig footage
  • emotional tributes
  • stories about seeing Soundgarden live
  • fans admitting Cornell’s music got them through dark periods
  • middle-aged grunge fans staring into the void with coffee mugs

Honestly? Entirely understandable.

Because for a lot of people, Soundgarden weren’t just background music.

They were survival music.

Songs you played during heartbreak.
Songs you screamed in cars after terrible days.
Songs that made lonely people feel understood.

And hearing there are still unreleased Chris Cornell performances waiting to be heard?

That’s powerful stuff.

🔥 THE PRESSURE MUST BE IMMENSE

One thing worth saying here — the surviving members deserve enormous respect for even attempting this.

Seriously.

Imagine the pressure involved.

Fans expect perfection.
Critics will analyse every lyric.
Every riff will be compared to classic albums.
Every vocal line from Cornell will carry emotional weight.

That’s a LOT.

But from everything Kim Thayil has said, it sounds like the band are approaching this with genuine care and respect rather than rushing something out quickly.

And honestly, that’s exactly what fans would want.

If this truly becomes Soundgarden’s final statement, it deserves patience.

🎧 WHAT COULD THE FINAL ALBUM SOUND LIKE?

Right now, details remain tightly under wraps.

No official title.
No confirmed track listing.
No release date.
No indication of how finished the material already was before Cornell’s death.

But naturally, fans are already speculating wildly.

Could it sound closer to the heavier chaos of Badmotorfinger?
Will it lean into the psychedelic darkness of Superunknown?
Could there be acoustic elements? Experimental stuff? Doom-heavy riffs?

Honestly? With Soundgarden, literally anything feels possible.

That unpredictability was always part of what made them special.

🤘 THE LEGACY OF SOUNDGARDEN STILL MATTERS

In today’s algorithm-driven music landscape, where songs are often written specifically for 15-second clips and TikTok loops, Soundgarden feel more important than ever.

They made music that demanded your attention.
Music that challenged listeners.
Music that sounded huge, dangerous, emotional, weird, and gloriously human.

No shortcuts.
No fake rebellion.
No polished social media nonsense.

Just riffs, atmosphere, emotion, and one absolutely god-tier vocalist standing in the middle of the storm.

And maybe that’s why this final album matters so much.

It’s not just about nostalgia.

It’s about preserving a piece of genuine rock history.

🖤 ONE FINAL TIME

There will never be another Chris Cornell.

Simple as that.

And while nothing can ever replace what was lost in 2017, the idea of hearing one final Soundgarden album featuring his voice feels incredibly special.

Bittersweet? Absolutely.
Emotional? Without question.
Necessary? Honestly… yes.

Because some voices deserve to echo forever. 🎤🔥

Whenever this album finally arrives, you can guarantee one thing:

The entire rock and metal world will stop what it’s doing, turn the volume up to dangerous levels, and listen together.

And somewhere, in pubs, bedrooms, festival campsites, battered old cars, and rain-soaked kitchens across the world…

Chris Cornell’s voice will once again shake the walls. 🤘🖤

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
