Alright, you lovely lot of riff-raff – grab your air guitars, dust off your wristbands, and let’s dive headfirst into the most chaotic charity concert face-off of all time. Two Goliaths. Two generations. One massive showdown:
👉 LIVE AID (1985) vs LIVE 8 (2005)
Who had the louder legends? Who pulled the bigger crowd? And most importantly — who had the better bloody line-up?! Let’s ‘ave it! 🥊🎸
🌍 A TALE OF TWO GIGS
Before we start swingin’ setlists and screaming “Ay-Oh” like Freddie possessed us, here’s a quick refresh on the heavy hitters:
🔥 LIVE AID – 1985
Date: July 13, 1985
Where: Wembley Stadium (London) & JFK Stadium (Philly)
Why: To raise urgent funds for famine relief in Ethiopia
Who Ran It: Bob Geldof & Midge Ure (with a phone, some sass, and zero chill)
Reach: 1.9 BILLION viewers in 150+ countries
Legacy: Changed the game. Proved music could save lives and melt faces at the same time.
🔥 LIVE 8 – 2005
Date: July 2, 2005
Where: 10 cities (London, Philly, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, Rome, etc.)
Why: Pressure the G8 to fight global poverty — not just raise money, raise hell
Who Ran It: Geldof again (the man never sleeps)
Reach: 2 BILLION viewers
Legacy: Less raw, more polished. But with some unreal moments and monster reunions.
🎸 LIVE AID LINE-UP: UNHINGED, UNTOUCHABLE, UNFORGETTABLE
Let’s get this straight — Live Aid was absolute carnage in the best possible way. It felt like someone just rang up every rock legend on speed dial and shouted, “Fancy saving the world on telly?”
Wembley Highlights (London):
- QUEEN – No explanation needed. Just bow down. 👑
- David Bowie
- U2 (baby Bono energy, pre-shades)
- Elton John
- Paul McCartney
- The Who
- Status Quo (they literally opened the show with “Rockin’ All Over the World”)
- George Michael
- Sting
- Phil Collins (who said, “Sod it,” and played both London and Philly thanks to Concorde ✈️🥁)
Philly Mayhem (USA):
- Led Zeppelin (kind of a car crash reunion but hey, it’s Zep)
- Bob Dylan
- Mick Jagger & Tina Turner (🔥 chemistry alert)
- Madonna (Like a Prayer? More like like a boss)
- Neil Young
- Tom Petty
- Eric Clapton
- Duran Duran
- Run DMC – Hip-hop enters the ring 🧢
MVP Moment?
Freddie Mercury + Queen. Wembley. 20 minutes of pure rock resurrection.
We’re talking THE definitive live performance. Ay-Oh? AYYY-OOOOOOOO! 🧨
🎧 LIVE 8 LINE-UP: BIGGER, SLEEKER, REUNITED & IT FEELS SO GOOD
Fast-forward 20 years — we’re in the MySpace era, Coldplay are a thing, and activism’s got a filter. Enter: Live 8 – the sequel with massive ambition and a glossier finish.
Hyde Park Bangers (London):
- U2 + Paul McCartney opened with “Sgt. Pepper’s” 🤯
- Coldplay + Richard Ashcroft (“Bittersweet Symphony” gave everyone the FEELS)
- Elton John
- REM
- Keane
- The Killers
- Robbie Williams (unhinged, charming, sweaty — classic Rob)
- Madonna
- Dido & Youssou N’Dour
- Snoop Dogg 🐶💨
- Snow Patrol
- Annie Lennox
- PINK FLOYD — OG lineup. First time in 24 years. Last time EVER. 🌈
- The Who (again!)
- Velvet Revolver
- Mariah Carey
Elsewhere Around the World:
- Green Day in Berlin 🧨
- Muse in Paris (dystopian doom piano kings)
- Linkin Park x Jay-Z in Philly (Collision Course ENERGY)
- Kanye West (back when he was still brilliant and unpredictable, not… whatever he is now)
- Alicia Keys, Destiny’s Child, Black Eyed Peas
MVP Moment?
PINK FLOYD. All four. Together. For one last trip through the dark side of the moon.
Tears were shed. Goosebumps were permanent. That’s one for the cosmic scrapbook.
🤔 SO WHO WINS, MUN?
Let’s break this down like a dodgy festival tent in the wind…
| Category | Winner |
|---|---|
| Raw Vibes | 🎤 Live Aid – Felt like the whole world was holding its breath between songs |
| Reunions | 🎸 Live 8 – Floyd. Floyd. FLOYD. |
| Global Scale | 🌍 Live 8 – 10 cities, massive reach |
| Performance of the Century | 👑 Live Aid – Queen at Wembley, no debate |
| Message & Impact | 🤝 Live Aid – Saved lives. Fed millions. No fluff. |
| Cool Factor | 😎 Live 8 – Had the slickest production and modern flair |
🕺 FINAL VERDICT: WHO RULES THE STAGE?
If you want raw, sweaty, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-leather-pants rock history, then Live Aid is the champ.
Queen’s set alone could end wars, heal heartbreak, and cure hangovers.
But if you’re after scale, ambition, and a line-up that spans every genre like a Glasto fever dream, then Live 8 takes the prize.
🏆 OFFICIAL RIFF REPORT WINNER?
LIVE AID. For sheer guts, chaos, and legendary energy.
It was wild. It was wonky. And it bloody worked. Proper job.
🗣️ SO WHAT’S OCCURRING, BUTT?
Which side are you on? Were you air-drumming with Phil Collins or sobbing over Pink Floyd’s reunion?
Did you have hairspray in 1985 or an iPod in 2005?

Rock on, diolch, and never forget:
🎤 “This is your time. This is your moment. This is your concert.” – Sir Bob Geldof (probably shouting at someone) 😅
📸 BONUS SHOUTS – WORTHY MENTIONS
- Bono hugging the girl mid-song at Live Aid? ICONIC
- Robbie Williams accidentally trying to kiss Bono at Live 8? Awkwardly beautiful 😂
- Snoop Dogg high as a kite on BBC Two at 5pm? Only in 2005, mun…
- That moment McCartney’s mic didn’t work for “Hey Jude” – we were ALL Paul 😭
