When politics crash-land into metal, it’s never subtle — and this one hit harder than a double kick drum in “Down With The Sickness.” Irish rap trio Kneecap have gone nuclear online after footage resurfaced showing Disturbed frontman David Draiman signing an Israeli artillery shell with the words “F**k Hamas.”

The photo, originally posted by Draiman himself during a visit to a military base near Gaza, has reignited debate across the rock world about where the line sits between political solidarity and glorifying violence.

🇮🇪 Kneecap’s Fury Goes Viral

Never a band to bite their tongue, Belfast-born trio Kneecap — known for their mix of Irish-language rap, punk chaos and anti-establishment humour — went in swinging. In a now-viral post, they called Draiman a “straight-up c**t” for “signing bombs dropped to murder kids,” a statement that’s been shared tens of thousands of times across European social media feeds.

Fans split instantly. Some cheered Kneecap’s no-holds-barred approach — “finally someone saying what we’re all thinking,” wrote one commenter — while others accused them of oversimplifying a complex conflict. Whatever side you’re on, the band’s post set off a global online moshpit.

💣 The Photo That Lit the Fuse

Back in late 2024, Draiman visited Israel to meet soldiers and visit towns near the Gaza border. During the trip he scrawled “F**k Hamas” on an artillery shell, posed for photos, and posted them to Instagram with the caption:

“With the brave men and women defending their homes against terrorists.”

Within hours, the image had been screen-grabbed, shared, condemned, praised, and meme-ified. Critics said it trivialised civilian suffering; supporters argued it was a personal act of solidarity after Hamas’s October 2023 attacks. Draiman later defended himself on X (formerly Twitter):

“My message was against Hamas. Anyone trying to twist that into something else is doing so in bad faith.”

🎭 Who Are Kneecap, Anyway?

For anyone outside Ireland’s underground scene, Kneecap might seem like newcomers — but they’ve been shaking institutions for years. Their bilingual lyrics mix Irish and English, their beats bounce between hip-hop and punk, and their shows feel like raves at a political protest.

The group first hit headlines for projecting “Ceasefire Now” on a Belfast police station and calling out the British government during festival sets. They’ve been banned from state-sponsored events, courted by major labels, and immortalised in a Sundance-selected film. So when they aimed their sights at Draiman, it was business as usual — punk activism with a mic drop.

⚔️ The Internet Reacts

Metal Reddit went full civil war. Threads with titles like “Is Draiman Out Of Line?” and “Kneecap Just Said What We’re All Thinking” flooded /r/Metal and /r/Music.

One fan wrote:

“I love Disturbed’s music but this feels weird — like turning a song into a weapon.”

Another fired back:

“He’s supporting soldiers fighting terrorists, what’s the issue?”

Meanwhile on X, memes appeared within hours: Draiman’s face Photoshopped onto Rambo posters, Kneecap’s lyrics plastered over protest footage, and one viral post showing a Photoshop of the shell with the caption ‘Down With The Civilians’ — which was swiftly taken down for obvious reasons.

The chaos reached TikTok, where users stitched Kneecap’s comments with clips of Disturbed’s “Indestructible,” turning the chorus into accidental irony.

🧠 Musicians and Moral Crossfire

This isn’t the first time rock musicians have waded into geopolitical mud. Remember Roger Waters’ long-running commentary on Israel–Palestine? Or Serj Tankian’s activism for Armenia? Metal has always flirted with politics, but there’s a difference between lyrical protest and real-world weaponry.

Draiman’s defenders argue he’s Jewish and was responding emotionally to atrocities committed by Hamas. Critics counter that his choice of medium — an artillery shell — turned empathy into endorsement of war. It’s a debate about optics, intent, and the social-media echo chamber: does meaning matter if the image goes viral without context?

📢 Kneecap’s Broader Message

For Kneecap, this was less about one singer and more about Western double standards. In follow-up interviews they emphasised the hypocrisy they see in how celebrity activism is received:

“If a rapper wrote their name on a missile in support of any other war, they’d be cancelled in seconds,” said Mo Chara. “But because it’s Israel, people pretend it’s fine.”

They framed their outrage as part of a wider anti-imperialist stance — the same worldview that fuels their art and lyrics. To them, Draiman’s photo wasn’t just bad optics; it symbolised what they see as complicity in global injustice.

📰 The Media Pile-On

Irish and British outlets pounced. The Irish Times ran op-eds about “music’s moral responsibility.” Metal blogs debated whether Kneecap’s language went too far. American talk-radio hosts barely hid their glee at “the woke rappers attacking Disturbed.”

Draiman, never shy online, posted a string of replies emphasising that he condemns civilian deaths and supports humanitarian aid. But as any metalhead knows, once social media has its teeth in a story, nuance gets drowned out faster than a blast beat.

🤘 Metal, Identity and Outrage Culture

This controversy exposed a generational rift in heavy music. The old guard still sees rock stars as outspoken rebels — people who should take sides. Younger fans, raised on post-political playlists and algorithmic feeds, want artists to avoid anything that makes them uncomfortable.

Disturbed built their legacy on empowerment anthems like “Voices” and “Inside the Fire.” Kneecap, on the other hand, thrive on provocation and protest. In a way, both are doing exactly what they’ve always done — they’re just colliding in a digital arena that weaponises every syllable.

🧨 Art, Aggression and Context

The optics of signing a weapon are hard to defend, no matter the message. For some, it’s a patriotic gesture; for others, a moral failure. What makes it explosive is the image itself — a musician known for lyrics about liberation now literally writing on instruments of death.

Kneecap’s response tapped into a wider frustration: that Western pop culture often flirts with war imagery until it becomes too real. Metal’s aesthetic — skulls, fire, apocalypse — suddenly clashes with genuine human suffering, and the result is messy.

💬 Fan Fallout

Across Disturbed’s own comment sections, reactions were a battlefield:

  • “Metal has always been political. Dave did nothing wrong.”
  • “This isn’t rebellion — it’s propaganda.”
  • “Both sides think they’re righteous. Meanwhile, kids are dying.”

Kneecap fans rallied with the hashtag #CeasefireNow, while Disturbed supporters countered with #StandWithIsrael. Algorithms fed both camps the worst of each other’s takes, and soon even people who hadn’t heard of Kneecap were arguing about them.

🕊️ What Draiman Said Next

In a later podcast, Draiman tried to calm the storm:

“I wrote that message out of anger at terrorists who slaughtered innocents. I stand for peace, but peace doesn’t come without defeating evil.”

He also invited artists critical of him to open dialogue:

“If Kneecap or anyone else wants to talk, my door’s open.”

Kneecap didn’t respond publicly, but fans joked they’d rather write a diss track than sit down for coffee.

🎶 When Music Becomes a Battlefield

The larger question remains: should artists be activists, or entertainers? Metal was born from protest — from Sabbath’s anti-war cries to Rage Against The Machine’s fury. But social media has blurred intent and impact. A single post can undo decades of goodwill.

Draiman likely saw his gesture as defiance; Kneecap saw it as dehumanisation. The truth probably lives somewhere in the uncomfortable middle — the place where art, pain, and politics meet.

🧩 The Riff Report Verdict

At the end of the day, both sides are doing what they’ve always done:

  • Draiman channels rage through solidarity, even if it misfires.
  • Kneecap weaponise words to confront hypocrisy.

Neither camp is backing down, and that’s exactly why this story matters. Metal and hip-hop share one thing: both thrive on rebellion. But maybe — just maybe — the next time someone in either scene wants to make a statement about war, they should pick up a microphone, not a marker pen.

🤯 Final Thoughts

The internet will move on. Draiman will still belt out “Ten Thousand Fists,” Kneecap will still rap in Irish about broken systems, and fans will still argue about politics under YouTube videos until the servers melt.

But this saga is a reminder that music doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Every post, every lyric, every photo can become a flashpoint. And in 2025, the real moshpit isn’t in the crowd — it’s online.

The Riff Report verdict: 🎤 Metal shouldn’t be used as artillery — unless it’s Slayer.

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
