Eight years in the making. Nearly nine minutes long. Piano, strings, heartbreak, Slash standing outside a tiny church absolutely murdering a Les Paul… and one of the greatest guitar solos ever committed to tape.

Some songs age.

Some songs become nostalgic.

And then there’s “November Rain.”

Thirty-five years after Guns N’ Roses unleashed their ridiculously ambitious rock epic on Use Your Illusion I in 1991, it still feels absolutely massive.

Not “quite good for its age.”

Not “a classic if you grew up with it.”

Massive.

The moment that piano begins, you know exactly what’s coming.

Axl Rose pouring his heart out. Strings swelling in the background. Slash waiting patiently to turn up and send the whole thing into another postcode.

Then comes that guitar.

🎸🔥

Ohhhhh yes, mun.

This isn’t merely a power ballad.

This is Guns N’ Roses building their own rock ’n’ roll cathedral.

And 35 years later, we’re still worshipping at the altar.

🎹 A Song Years in the Making

By the time Use Your Illusion I arrived in September 1991, “November Rain” had already been living inside Axl Rose’s head for years.

The song’s origins stretch back to the early days of Guns N’ Roses, with Rose developing the piano-based composition long before the band became one of the biggest rock acts on Earth.

Accounts of the song’s history place Rose working on the idea as early as 1983, meaning the finished recording was the result of roughly eight years of tinkering, rewriting and refusing to let the bloody thing go.

And thank Lemmy he didn’t.

Early versions and demos show just how seriously Rose took the song. This wasn’t something knocked together during an afternoon in the studio because the album needed another track.

This was Axl’s baby.

The final version eventually landed on Use Your Illusion I, released on 17 September 1991, alongside songs including “Don’t Cry”, “Live and Let Die”, “Dead Horse” and “Coma”.

And it immediately demonstrated something important.

Guns N’ Roses weren’t interested in simply making Appetite for Destruction Part II.

They were going BIG.

🌹 From Sunset Strip Animals to Rock Royalty

Think about how dramatically Guns N’ Roses had evolved.

Appetite for Destruction was dangerous.

Dirty.

Sweaty.

Unpredictable.

It sounded like five blokes had been locked inside a room with several bottles of Jack Daniel’s, a collection of Marshall stacks and absolutely no responsible adult supervision.

Then along comes “November Rain”.

🎻 Strings.

🎹 Grand piano.

🎸 Multiple guitar solos.

🌧️ Emotional devastation.

The whole thing clocks in at 8 minutes and 57 seconds.

On paper, it sounds completely bonkers.

But somehow it works.

Actually, forget “works”.

It soars.

“November Rain” showed just how ambitious Guns N’ Roses could become when the shackles came off.

You can hear shades of the grand theatrical rock of Queen, the piano-led songwriting of Elton John, and the epic scale of classic ’70s rock.

But it still sounds unmistakably like Guns N’ Roses.

Because eventually…

Slash arrives.

🎸 And Then Slash Plays THAT Solo

There are guitar solos.

There are great guitar solos.

There are legendary guitar solos.

And then there’s Slash on “November Rain.”

The song actually contains several lead-guitar moments, each helping push the track towards its enormous finale.

But THAT solo?

You know the one.

The Les Paul.

The cigarette.

The hair.

The desert.

The little white church.

Slash walks outside like he’s just remembered he left the oven on, straps on the guitar and proceeds to deliver one of rock music’s most recognisable lead passages.

No ridiculous million-note shredding competition.

No “LOOK HOW FAST I CAN PLAY!” nonsense.

It’s melody.

Bends.

Sustain.

Space.

Feeling.

Every note feels like it belongs exactly where Slash puts it.

That’s what makes the greatest guitar solos special.

You can sing them.

And millions of rock fans could probably hum the “November Rain” solo from memory despite never having touched a Les Paul in their lives.

That’s songwriting through six strings.

Absolute filth, Slash. 🎸🔥

🤘 The Solo Wasn’t About Showing Off

One of the reasons Slash’s playing works so beautifully is because the guitar never feels disconnected from the song.

He isn’t trying to hijack “November Rain”.

He’s answering it.

Axl sings the heartbreak.

Slash makes the guitar feel it.

The first sections are restrained and melodic, but as the song develops, the guitar becomes increasingly aggressive until everything erupts during the enormous final movement.

And that ending…

GOOD LORD.

🥁 Drums crashing.

🎻 Strings screaming.

🎸 Slash going full guitar god.

🎤 Axl wailing over everything.

It feels like somebody has thrown Guns N’ Roses, an orchestra and a thunderstorm into the same studio and told everyone:

“Right lads, finish the song whenever you fancy.”

Nearly nine minutes later…

Done.

😂🤘

🎬 And Then There Was THAT Music Video

Of course, you cannot talk about “November Rain” without talking about its gloriously ridiculous music video.

Because Guns N’ Roses weren’t going to accompany one of the biggest songs of their career with five blokes standing inside a warehouse.

Oh no.

We needed CINEMA.

The video became one of the defining rock clips of the MTV era.

There’s a wedding.

There’s a massive reception.

There’s Slash performing outside that tiny church.

There’s Axl at the piano.

There’s rain.

There’s tragedy.

There’s a funeral.

There’s somebody diving through a wedding cake for reasons humanity may never fully understand.

Honestly, the bloke sees rain and thinks:

“BETTER DESTROY THE CAKE.”

😂🎂🌧️

Peak early-’90s rock video logic.

💔 Wait… What Actually Happened to the Bride?

And here begins one of rock music’s great mysteries.

The wedding appears happy.

Then suddenly we’re at a funeral.

What happened?!

Fans have debated the video for decades.

The clip forms part of the loose trilogy associated with “Don’t Cry”, “November Rain” and “Estranged”, with imagery influenced by Del James’ short story Without You.

But the ambiguity arguably makes the video even more memorable.

You don’t get every answer.

You get emotion.

Love.

Loss.

Chaos.

And Slash standing in the desert playing guitar.

Which, frankly, should be compulsory in every romantic drama.

Imagine Titanic.

Jack is freezing in the Atlantic.

Rose is crying.

Camera pans across the ocean…

SLASH GUITAR SOLO.

Instant improvement.

📈 A Nine-Minute Song Became a Huge Hit

Here’s another thing that makes “November Rain” extraordinary.

It became a major mainstream single.

A nearly nine-minute rock ballad.

Try pitching that to modern commercial radio.

“Right, we’ve got the new single.”

“How long?”

“Nearly nine minutes.”

“Okay… radio edit?”

“No.”

“Catchy three-minute chorus?”

“Not really.”

“What happens around seven-and-a-half minutes?”

“Slash goes absolutely mental.”

“…Fine. Release it.”

😂

Released as a single in 1992, “November Rain” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at the time became the longest song ever to reach the chart’s Top 10. (Wikipedia)

That achievement tells you just how enormous Guns N’ Roses were.

This wasn’t some obscure album epic loved exclusively by hardcore fans.

The world embraced it.

🎹 Axl Rose Was Swinging for the Fences

Whatever anyone thinks about Axl Rose — and let’s face it, rock fans have been debating the bloke since approximately five minutes after Guns N’ Roses formed — “November Rain” demonstrates his ambition as a songwriter.

He could have played it safe.

Guns N’ Roses already had the formula.

Big riffs.

Danger.

Swagger.

Slash.

Write another “Welcome to the Jungle”.

Write another “Paradise City”.

Job done.

Instead, Rose chased something considerably bigger.

“November Rain” sounds like someone asking:

“What if Guns N’ Roses made their own ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’?”

Not structurally.

Not musically.

But in terms of sheer ambition.

A song where conventional radio rules simply don’t matter.

Where the arrangement goes wherever the emotion demands.

Where being excessive isn’t a flaw.

Being excessive is the entire bloody point.

🌧️ Why ‘November Rain’ Still Works 35 Years Later

Here’s the important bit.

Strip away the enormous music video.

Strip away the MTV nostalgia.

Strip away Slash standing outside the church.

Strip away the mythology surrounding Guns N’ Roses.

There’s still a fantastic song underneath it all.

The piano melody remains beautiful.

The orchestration gives the track scale without completely overwhelming the band.

Axl delivers one of his most vulnerable performances.

Slash’s guitar parts are instantly recognisable.

And the song understands something surprisingly simple:

It builds.

Slowly.

Patiently.

It doesn’t give everything away in the opening 30 seconds.

The first guitar solo feels earned.

Then another peak arrives.

Then you think the song might be finished.

NOPE.

Here comes the apocalypse.

🔥🔥🔥

That final section transforms the track from power ballad into something altogether more dramatic.

It’s theatrical.

It’s excessive.

It’s emotional.

It’s completely unapologetic.

Basically…

it’s rock music.

🎸 Slash’s Guitar Work Remains Untouchable

There’s a reason discussions about the greatest rock guitar solos eventually wander towards “November Rain”.

Technique matters.

But technique alone doesn’t create iconic solos.

Memorability does.

David Gilmour understood it.

Brian May understands it.

Jimmy Page understood it.

And Slash absolutely understood it.

Sometimes one perfectly bent note says more than 400 notes fired out like someone dropping a cutlery drawer down the stairs.

Slash’s “November Rain” playing breathes.

You can hear the personality behind it.

Within seconds you know exactly who is playing.

That’s something you simply cannot teach.

🕯️ “Nothing Lasts Forever…”

And perhaps that’s why the song continues connecting with people.

Underneath the orchestra, massive guitar solos and multi-million-dollar rock-star spectacle sits something painfully human.

Relationships change.

People change.

Love can be complicated.

Nothing lasts forever.

Sometimes you desperately want something to work even while knowing it might not.

That feeling doesn’t belong to 1991.

It belongs to everyone.

Which means new generations continue discovering “November Rain” without needing the nostalgia attached to it.

Maybe they find it through their parents.

Maybe through classic-rock playlists.

Maybe through Guns N’ Roses live footage.

Maybe because somebody says:

“You HAVE to watch this Slash solo.”

Nine minutes later…

Another convert.

Welcome aboard, butt. 🤘

🏆 35 Years Later, It’s Still a Masterpiece

Plenty of massive songs came out of the early ’90s.

Some sound unmistakably tied to their era.

“November Rain” somehow escaped.

Yes, the music video is gloriously early-’90s.

Yes, the production is enormous.

Yes, everything about it screams ROCK STAR EXCESS.

But musically?

It still hits.

8 minutes and 57 seconds of heartbreak, orchestration, piano, drama and some of the finest guitar playing Slash ever recorded. (Wikipedia)

Guns N’ Roses could have trimmed it.

They could have simplified it.

They could have made something safer.

Thank goodness they didn’t.

Because sometimes rock music shouldn’t be sensible.

Sometimes you need the orchestra.

Sometimes you need the grand piano.

Sometimes you need a ridiculously expensive video involving weddings, funerals and suicidal wedding-cake enthusiasts.

And sometimes…

you just need Slash standing outside a tiny church absolutely sending it.

🎸🌧️🔥

Thirty-five years on, “November Rain” isn’t merely surviving.

It’s still pouring down.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Guns N’ Roses – “November Rain”

🎸 Riff: Legendary
🎹 Piano: Goosebumps
🌧️ Drama: Absolutely unnecessary — therefore absolutely perfect
🎬 Video: Peak MTV madness
🎸 Slash solo: Stick it in the rock ’n’ roll museum immediately
🔥 Legacy: Untouchable

Rating: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 / 5

What about you, Riff Report crew?

Is “November Rain” Guns N’ Roses’ greatest song?

Does Slash’s solo belong among the greatest guitar solos ever recorded?

Or are you backing “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, “Estranged”, “Paradise City” or another GN’R monster?

Crank it up, argue nicely and let us know.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. 🤘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁿

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
