Manchester’s rising dark visionaries deliver a debut album drenched in atmosphere, sorrow and spellbinding heaviness

Some albums arrive with noise.
Others arrive like ghosts.

You don’t hear them charging towards you with fists in the air and pyrotechnics exploding behind them. Instead, they creep through the cracks in the walls at 2am while the rain batters the windows and the streetlights flicker outside. They linger in the back of your mind for days afterwards, quietly consuming every thought like smoke curling from a candle.

Reliquia’s In Theory And Practice is very much one of those albums.

And honestly, mun… it’s absolutely magnificent. 🖤

🌑 MANCHESTER’S NEW MERCHANTS OF GLOOM

Since forming in Manchester in 2023, Reliquia have steadily built a reputation as one of the most intriguing new names emerging from the UK underground metal scene. While countless bands chase algorithms, trends and TikTok-ready gimmicks, Reliquia have instead focused on building atmosphere, emotion and genuine artistic depth.

The result?

A sound that feels timeless.

Drawing influence from gothic rock, doom metal, black metal, post-punk and dark ambient, Reliquia have crafted music that feels cinematic and deeply immersive without ever losing its emotional punch. There’s something wonderfully old-school about their approach too — the sense that the album itself matters, that every track exists for a reason, and that the entire experience should be absorbed as one complete journey.

This isn’t background music for scrolling through your phone while pretending to answer emails.

This is “sit in the dark and stare dramatically out the window while questioning existence” music.

The best kind of music, basically. 🌧️🕯️

⚰️ FROM UNDERGROUND WHISPERS TO FULL-BLOWN OCCULT FORCE

Before unveiling their debut album, Reliquia had already started turning heads through a series of haunting single releases and emotionally charged live performances that quickly made them one of the UK underground’s most talked-about emerging acts.

And they haven’t exactly been sharing stages with nobodies either.

The band have already appeared alongside revered names such as:

  • Hexvessel
  • Darkest Era
  • Godthrymn
  • Attrition

…and numerous other respected acts from the darker side of heavy music.

Their performances have earned praise for their hypnotic atmosphere and emotional weight, with The Sleeping Shaman describing Reliquia’s live presence as:

“Atmospheric and moody… hits the spot perfectly.”

Meanwhile, previous single “Secret Sons Of The Barren Sky” earned admiration from All Metal Everything, who praised the band’s ability to:

“Pack every second of gloom full of interesting musical details and innovative progressions.”

That quote honestly feels like the perfect summary of what makes Reliquia stand out.

There’s no wasted space here.

Every layer, every guitar line, every distant echo and lingering melody serves the atmosphere completely.

🖤 IN THEORY AND PRACTICE FEELS LIKE A BEAUTIFULLY CURSED EXPERIENCE

The phrase “debut album” sometimes carries expectations of rough edges, experimentation or bands still discovering who they are.

Reliquia completely ignore that idea.

In Theory And Practice sounds like the work of a band already fully immersed in their artistic identity. From start to finish, the album flows with astonishing confidence and cohesion, moving naturally between moments of crushing emotional heaviness and delicate introspection.

It doesn’t feel stitched together.

It feels possessed.

The opening track “Caesar, Bejewelled” immediately establishes the album’s rich emotional palette. Haunting guitars intertwine with vast atmospheric textures, creating a sense of grandeur and melancholy that pulls listeners directly into Reliquia’s shadow-soaked world.

And once you’re inside… there’s no escaping.

🌘 TRACKS THAT BLEED ATMOSPHERE

🕯️ “Crestfallen”

Few songs capture emotional desolation quite like this one.

“Crestfallen” drifts through layers of mournful beauty and simmering darkness, wrapping listeners in a fog of sorrow and reflection. The track feels deeply personal, almost confessional, yet never loses its cinematic scale.

This is gothic metal at its most emotionally devastating.

⚔️ “Temple Terrace”

If In Theory And Practice has moments of genuine menace, “Temple Terrace” is where the shadows fully sharpen their teeth.

Massive guitars crash against eerie atmospheric passages, creating a track that feels equal parts hypnotic and threatening. There’s an incredible tension throughout the song — like wandering through abandoned ruins knowing something ancient is watching from the darkness.

Absolute chills, butt.

🪦 “Bone And Shale”

Possibly one of the album’s finest moments.

“Bone And Shale” trades sheer heaviness for emotional impact, proving Reliquia understand restraint just as well as power. There’s something quietly heartbreaking about this track, its melodies unfolding slowly like old memories resurfacing at the worst possible moment.

It’s soft. It’s vulnerable. It’s gorgeous.

And it hits like a bus emotionally.

🌫️ “Interlude”

Many albums throw in instrumental interludes as filler.

Reliquia use “Interlude” as a portal.

The track acts as a hypnotic transition deeper into the album’s dreamlike darkness, giving the listener just enough time to breathe before dragging them even further into the emotional abyss.

It’s subtle, eerie and absolutely essential to the album’s pacing.

🖤 “Give”

And then comes the finale.

“Give” closes the album with staggering emotional weight, feeling less like a final song and more like the slow collapse of an entire world. The atmosphere becomes almost unbearably heavy at times, yet there’s still beauty woven throughout every moment.

It’s lonely. Reflective. Devastating.

And utterly unforgettable.

By the end of the album, you genuinely feel like you’ve travelled somewhere emotionally exhausting and strangely beautiful.

That’s a rare achievement.

🎛️ A PRODUCTION JOB THAT FEELS ALIVE

A massive amount of credit must go to the production team behind In Theory And Practice.

The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by the hugely respected Joe Clayton, whose previous work includes bands such as:

  • Ba’al
  • Conjurer
  • Aggressive Perfector

Meanwhile, Ben McEwan, who also worked on many of Reliquia’s earlier singles, helped shape the album’s immersive sonic identity.

And honestly? The production here is phenomenal.

The balance between heaviness and atmosphere is near perfect. Nothing sounds muddy. Nothing feels overproduced. The quieter passages breathe naturally while the heavier sections hit with immense emotional force.

Most importantly, the production never interrupts the immersion.

You don’t hear a collection of isolated tracks.

You hear one continuous emotional journey.

🎨 THE ARTWORK LOOKS LIKE A NIGHTMARE YOU DON’T WANT TO WAKE FROM

The visual side of In Theory And Practice is equally stunning.

The album artwork comes from Chris Kiesling, aka Misanthropic Art, whose previous work with Katatonia, Demonical, and Mortuary Drape has already cemented his reputation within the darker realms of heavy music.

The artwork perfectly complements Reliquia’s sound — eerie, unsettling and layered with hidden detail.

It looks like forbidden knowledge.

Like the cover of a book you’d discover buried beneath floorboards in an abandoned chapel somewhere in rural Wales after hearing strange chanting outside during a thunderstorm.

So naturally, we love it. 😈⚡

🌧️ WHY RELIQUIA FEEL IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW

What makes Reliquia genuinely exciting isn’t just their sound.

It’s their commitment to atmosphere and emotional authenticity at a time when so much modern heavy music feels disposable and rushed.

In Theory And Practice takes its time. It trusts listeners to engage fully with the experience. It values mood, pacing and storytelling over instant gratification.

And because of that, the album feels deeply human despite all its darkness.

There’s heartbreak here. Isolation. Reflection. Longing.

But there’s also beauty hidden within every shadow.

Reliquia understand that darkness only truly matters when emotion exists beneath it.

That’s what separates atmospheric music from empty aesthetics.

And Reliquia absolutely understand the difference.

🦇 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Reliquia have not merely released a strong debut album.

They’ve released the kind of album that quietly embeds itself inside listeners’ lives and refuses to leave.

In Theory And Practice is immersive, emotionally devastating, richly atmospheric and astonishingly mature for a debut release. It feels handcrafted with care, passion and genuine artistic vision.

For fans of gothic metal, doom, post-punk, dark ambient and emotionally driven heavy music, this album is absolutely essential listening.

Manchester’s underground scene has produced something truly special here.

And if this is only the beginning of Reliquia’s journey into the dark… the future looks beautifully bleak indeed. 🌒🖤🔥

🕯️ In Theory And Practice releases May 12th.

Support underground music. Support atmosphere. Support bands willing to make art instead of content.

And maybe keep a light on afterwards, butt. 👀🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
