Stop whatever youโre doing, grab a cuppa, crack open a warm festival lager and prepare your wallets for absolute devastationโฆ because legendary prog-rock titans Pink Floyd have officially been immortalised on a brand-new UK coin from The Royal Mint.
Yep.
Actual legal-tender prog metal-adjacent shiny money.
And honestly? It looks lush. ๐ฅ
The new commemorative release lands as part of The Royal Mintโs hugely popular Music Legends series, which has already honoured icons like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Paul McCartney โ and now itโs Pink Floydโs turn to enter the rock โnโ roll money hall of fame. Proper job.
๐ THE DARK SIDE OF THE MINT
The design is an absolute love letter to Floyd fans.
Front and centre is the iconic prism artwork from The Dark Side of the Moon, complete with the rainbow beam slicing across the coin like a laser through a fog-filled festival field at midnight.
Some versions even include a colour-print effect, making the rainbow pop harder than the front row after three pints of cider and the opening riff of โComfortably Numb.โ ๐๐บ
The artwork was designed by artist Henry Gray and celebrates the bandโs legacy stretching all the way back to 1973 โ because apparently even coins can become prog now.
๐ธ HOW MUCH ARE THEY?
Now brace yourselves, buttโฆ because the prices are all over the place.
The cheapest version starts at a relatively fan-friendly:
- ๐ฐ ยฃ18.50 โ Brilliant Uncirculated edition
But if you fancy going full rock aristocracy:
- ๐ ยฃ5,320 โ Gold Proof edition
Five grand for a coin.
Thatโs not pocket change anymore โ thatโs โsell a kidney and your vintage tour shirtsโ territory. ๐
Still, letโs be honestโฆ there are Floyd fans out there already refreshing the checkout page harder than people scrambling for Download Festival tickets.
๐ธ PINK FLOYD: NATIONAL TREASURE STATUS CONFIRMED
At this point, Pink Floyd arenโt just a band.
Theyโre basically part of British history.
Their music has soundtracked breakups, road trips, late-night existential crises, dodgy student flats, festival campsites, and probably at least seven million people staring dramatically out of train windows in the rain.
From Wish You Were Here to Animals to The Wall, their influence on rock music is absolutely ridiculous. Entire generations of musicians have tried to recreate that Floyd atmosphere โ the giant soundscapes, the emotion, the weirdness, the solos that somehow feel like outer space crying.
And now?
Theyโve literally been stamped into British currency. ๐
๐ค RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Would we spend ยฃ5,320 on a coin?
Absolutely not. We still complain about ยฃ8 festival pints. ๐บ
BUTโฆ
As collectorโs pieces go, these are undeniably cool. Whether youโre a die-hard Floyd obsessive, a vinyl nerd, or just someone who thinks prog rock deserves more respect in the mainstream, this is a proper classy tribute to one of the biggest bands the UK has ever produced.
Now excuse us while we stare at the rainbow prism for 45 minutes and pretend we understand all of Echoes.
Shine on, you crazy diamond, mun. ๐๐ค
